  • An investigation of the thrust vectoring nozzle which can be applied to the supersonic variable exhaust system was performed. The maximum mach number of the model aircraft is 1.8 and mission radius is about 400Nm. The cycle analysis are performed at each operating regime of the aircraft and the specifications of the thrust vectoring nozzle were developed. Based upon the requirement of the thrust vectoring nozzle, two dimensional thrust vectoring nozzle were designed and flow analysis was conducted by deflection of the pitch and yaw angle.

  • Legislative and regulatory actions regarding the exhaust gas from ships are being strengthened by both international organizations and national governments, to protect human health and the environment. Exhaust gas traps are excluded from exhaust gas regulation applications, but, recently, the United States, Britain, and other developed countries have examined a variety of ways to improve the system, including the introduction of electric propulsion systems to prevent air pollution generated by naval ships. This study investigates a large number of smoke problems of naval diesel engines to verify the effect of improving the nozzle characteristics. An exhaust gas emission measurement method to determine the quality of pollutant exhaust gas generated during low-load operation is proposed through the research methodology of the smoke problem. It was confirmed that the emissions value is improved by decreasing the nozzle hole diameter and increasing the injection pressure. At the same time, the flow rate decrease equation and setting up a test memo based on the nozzle diameter confirmed that the fuel consumption, to which the nozzle diameter in the flow path is related, is reduced.

  • The infrared lock-on range of target aircraft plays a critical role in determining the aircraft survivability. In this investigation, the effects of various UAV engine nozzle configurations on the aircraft lock-on range were theoretically analyzed. A virtual subsonic aircraft was proposed first, based on the mission requirement and the engine performance analysis, and convergent-type nozzles were then designed. After determining thermal flow field and nozzle surface temperature distribution with the CFD code, an additional analysis was conducted to predict the IR signature. Also, atmospheric transmissivity for various latitude and seasons was calculated, using the LOWTRAN code. Finally, the lock-on and lethal envelopes were calculated for different nozzle configurations, assuming the sensor threshold of the given IR guided missile. It was shown that the maximum 55.3% reduction in lock-on range is possible for deformed nozzles with the high aspect ratio.

  • Diesel engine injector is used for spraying the fuel into the cylinder chamber. Complex phenomenon like cavitation occurs from small scale domain, highly pressurized condition and rapid injection. Flow inside the nozzle affects the whole engine performance including combustion and exhaust, therefore understanding the flow inside the injector nozzle is very important. In this paper, cylindrical and convergent-divergent nozzles are suggested for nozzle types and their influences on nozzle internal flow and nozzle outlet characteristics will be analyzed by changing their outlet diameters.

  • Numerical simulation and experimental study on the thermal flow field of the micro turbojet engine have been carried out for the purpose of developing infrared reduction technology for aircraft. A circular basic nozzle and five rectangular nozzles with different aspect ratio were considered. The conditions for CFD analysis were derived from the analysis of the engine performance. The temperature distribution of the nozzle plume was measured using a temperature sensing system. The thrust of the rectangular nozzle with the aspect ratio 5 was reduced about 1.8% compared to the circular nozzle, and the thrust decreased with increasing the aspect ratio of the nozzle. In the case of thermal flow field, it was observed that, as the aspect ratio increases, the exhaust plume in the experiment was formed wider than in the CFD analysis.
