Composition of Nutrient Solution for Endive(Cichorium endivia L.) Hydroponics (엔디브 양액재배에 적합한 배양액 조성)

  • This experiment was conducted to composition of nutrient solution for tore of endive hydroponics, and was compared the nutrient solution developed in the Seoul City University(SCUE) with the conventional solution of Proefstation voor Tuinbouw ender Glas. Proper compositions of nutrient solution for endive hydroponics were NO$_3$-N 15.0, NH$_4$-N 1.0, PO$_4$-P 3.0. K 10.0, Ca 5.0 and Mg 3.5 me.$\ell$$^{-1}$ , respectively SCUE and PTG standard nutrient solution showed slightly better yields among nutrient solutions. The SCUE nutrient solution and the PTG nutrient solution had no difference on growth and yield of endive Plants.

Effect of Root Zone Restriction on the Growth Response and Phytonutrients Contents of Leafy Vegetables Grown in a DFT System (담액 수경재배시 근권제한이 엽채류의 생육 및 식물 영양소 함량에 미치는 영향)

  • Two leaf lettuces, chicory, endive, edible chrysanthemum, and pak-choi were hydroponically cultured under root restricted conditions in a deep flow technique system and their growth and nutritional values were investigated. Cylindrical plastic tubes with 100 mm height and diameters of 20, 25 or 30 mm were used for root restriction. Growth of all species was retarded by 25-95% as the roots zone was restricted. Pak-choi and edible chrysanthemum showed greater reduction in growth as compared with chicory and endive. Percent dry matter, C/N ratio, and contents of total ascorbic acid and total anthocyanin increased in the root restricted treatments. Contents of P and K decreased in the root restricted treatments, while contents of Mg, Fe, Mn, and Zn were not consistent among the tested species. Optimized root volumes to improve the nutritional values and to reduce the growth retardation varied depending on species of leafy vegetables. Tubes of ${\Phi}25mm{\times}100mm$ and ${\Phi}30mm{\times}100mm$ were suitable for chicory, endive and lettuce, and edible chrysanthemum and pak-choi, respectively. Results indicate that nutritional values of hydroponically-cultured leafy vegetables can be improved by root restriction.

Effect of Vitamin C Treatments on the Storability of Baby Vegetables in MA storage (저장전 비타민 C 처리가 베이비채소의 MA 저장중 저장성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to find out the effect of vitamin C treatments on the storability of several baby vegetables; endive, green romaine lettuce, pak-choi, red romaine, lollo rosa, and ssamchoo. The vitamin C was treated by the foliar spray which was carried out 3 times before harvest or dipping in vitamin C solution for 5 minutes after harvest. The vitamin C contents of 6 different baby vegetables were higher in vitamin C treatments than control, whereas the difference of vitamin C content between treatments was disappeared after storage. The fresh weight of ssamchoo and lollo rosa lettuce treated by vitamin C was maintained higher than that of control. There was not significant difference in visual quality among treatments, though some of baby vegetables treated by washing with vitamin C showed better visual quality than the others. The contents of carbon dioxide, oxygen and ethylene in MAP with baby vegetables did not show any difference among treatments. As the result, high concentrated vitamin C treatment, such as the foliar spray and washing (dipping) had a role of increasing functionality, but the enhanced functionality, high vitamin C, did not affect storability in baby vegetables.
