In this paper, an effective variable-block-based image compression technique using wavelet transform is proposed. Since the statistical property of each wavelet subband is different, we apply the adaptive quantization to each wavelet subband. In the proposed algorithm, each subband is divided into non-overlapping variable-sized blocks based on directional properties. In addition, we remove wavelet coefficients which are below a certain threshold value for coding efficiency. To compress the transformed data, the proposed algorithm quantizes the wavelet coefficients using scalar quantizer in LL subband and vector quantizers for other subbands to increase compression ratio. The proposed algorithm shows improvements in compression ratio as well as PSNR compared with the existing block-based compression algorithms. In addition, it does not cause any blocking artifacts in very low bit rates even though it is also a block-based method. The proposed algorithm also has advantage in computational complexity over the existing wavelet-based compression algorithms since it is a block-based algorithm.
The use of eco-friendly energy in the offshore plant system is expanding because conventional generators are operated by fossil fuel or natural gas. Eco-friendly energy, which replaces existing power generation methods, should be capable of generating the power for lighting protection equipment, airborne fault indication, parameter measurement, and others. Most of the eco-friendly energy used in offshore plant facilities is solar and wind power. In the case of using photovoltaic power, because the structure must be constructed based as flat solar panels, it can be damaged easily by the wind. Therefore, there is a need for a new generation system composed of a spherical structure that does not require a separate structure and is less influenced by the wind. Considering these characteristics, in this study we designed, fabricated, and tested a unit that could provide the most efficient spherical photovoltaic power generation considering wind direction and wind pressure. Our test results indicated that the proposed system reduced costs because it did not require any separate structure, used eco-friendly energy, reduced carbon dioxide emissions, and expanded the proportion of eco-friendly energy use by offshore plant facilities.
Industrial WSNs need great performance and reliable communication. In industrial WSNs, cluster structure reduces the cost to form a network, and the reservation-based MAC is a more powerful and reliable protocol than the contention-based MAC. Depth-based TDMA assigns time slots to each sensor node in a cluster-based network and it works in a distributed manner. DB-TDMA is a type of depth-based TDMA and guarantees scalability and energy efficiency. However, it cannot allocate time slots in parallel and cannot perfectly avoid a collision because each node does not know the total network information. In this paper, we suggest an improved distributed algorithm to reduce the end-to-end delay of DB-TDMA, and the proposed algorithm is compared with DRAND and DB-TDMA.
The data centric storage (DCS) scheme is one of representative methods to efficiently store and maintain data generated in wireless sensor networks. In the DCS schemes, each node has the specified data range for storing data. This feature is highly vulnerable to the faults of nodes. In this paper, we propose a new recovery scheme for the lost data caused by the faults of nodes in DCS environments. The proposed scheme improves the accuracy of query results by recovering the lost data using the spatial continuity of physical data. To show the superiority of our proposed scheme, we simulate it in the DCS environments with the faults of nodes. In the result, our proposed scheme improves the accuracy by about 28% through about 2.5% additional energy consumption over the existing scheme.

In this paper, we propose a new reliable broadcast protocol referred to as timer-based reliable broadcast (TRB) for wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The proposed TRB scheme exploits (1) bitmap based explicit ACK to effectively reduce the unnecessary error control messages and (2) randomized timer for ACK transmission to substantially reduce the possibility of contentions. Although it has been argued that 100% reliability is not necessary in WSNs, there should be messages (such as mission-critical message, task assignment, software updates, etc.) that need to be reliably delivered to the entire sensor field. We propose to use the TRB algorithm for such cases. Performance evaluation shows that the TRB scheme achieves 100 % reliability significantly better than other schemes with expense of slightly increased energy consumption.

Global warming has been hot issue world wide. Korea has been dealing with the global issue under the slogan of low carbon and green-growth such as setting national greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets and allocation to each industrial sector. Infrastructure construction, in which enormous social overhead capital (SOC) is input, has great role as one of the actions. Road is one of the representative infrastructure and large amount of resources is utilized in its construction, operation and maintenance stage. The estimation methodology of life cycle carbon emissions was developed and applied to a case study of highway currently under construction in this study. Also, total carbon emissions of all the highway in South Korea at present (2009) and cumulative carbon emissions from 2009 to 2020 were estimated using the results of case study.

In this paper, an error-resilient image compression technique using wavelet transform is proposed. The zerotree technique that uses properties of statistics, energy and directions of wavelet coefficients in the space-frequency domain shows effective compression results. Since it is highly sensitive to the propagation of channel errors, evena single bit error degrades the whole image quality severely. In the proposed algorithm, the image is encoded by the SPIHT(Set Partitioning in Hierarchical Trees) algorithm using the zerotree coding technique. Encoded bitstreams are partitioned into some blocks using the subband correlations and then fixed-length blocks are made by using the effective bit reorganization algorithm. finally, an effective bit allocation technique is used to limit error propagation in each block. Therefore, in low BER the proposed algorithm shows similar compression performance to the zerotree compression technique and in high BER it shows better performance in terms of PSNR than the conventional methods.

In this paper, we propose a novel energy efficient MAC protocol which is based on orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) and exploits the physical characteristic that propagation loss of acoustic wave depends on the distance. In the proposed scheme, sensor nodes are grouped according to the distance to sink node. Then, each group uses a different frequency band. The proposed scheme not only enables all sensor nodes to maintain the signal-to-noise ratio above a certain required level (Accepted Minimum SNR, AMS), but also reduces overall transmission power consumption. In addition, the dynamic sub-channel allocation is employed in order to improve data transmission rate. Simulations show that proposed MAC protocol has better performance in a delay-tolerant underwater acoustic sensor networks.

The use of NAND flash memory is continuously increased with the demand of mobile data in the IT industry environment. However, the erase operations in flash memory require longer latency and higher power consumption, resulting in the limited lifetime for each cell. Therefore, frequent write/erase operations reduce the performance and the lifetime of the flash memory. In order to solve this problem, management techniques for improving the performance of flash based storage by reducing write and erase operations of flash memory with using disk buffers have been studied. In this paper, we propose a CPWL to minimized the number of write operations. It is a disk buffer management that separates read and write pages according to the characteristics of the buffer memory access patterns. This technique increases the lifespan of the flash memory and decreases an energy consumption by reducing the number of writes by arranging pages according to the characteristics of buffer memory access mode of requested pages.

In this paper, we proposed new sensor network architecture with autonomous robots based on beacon mode and implemented real time monitoring system in real test-bed environment. The proposed scheme offers beacon based real-time scheduling for reliable association process with parent nodes and dynamically assigns network address by using NAA (Next Address Assignment) mechanism. For the large scale multi-sensor processing, our real-time monitoring system accomplished the intelligent database processing, which can generate not only the alert messages to the civilians but also process various sensing data such as fire, air, temperature and etc. Moreover, we also developed mobile robot which can support network mobility. Though the performance evaluation by using real test-bed system, we illustrate that our proposed system demonstrates promising performance for emergence monitoring systems.
