  • To simulate the wave transformation by an energy dissipation region, a numerical model is suggested by discretizing the elliptic mild-slope equation. Generalized conjugate gradient method is used as solution algorithm to apply parabolic approximation to open boundary condition. To demonstrate the applicabil-ity of the numerical procedure suggested, the wave scattering by a circular damping region is examined. The feature of reflection in front of the damping region is captured clearly by the numerical solution. The effect of the size of dissipation coefficient is examined for a rectangular damping region. The recovery of wave height by diffraction occurs very slowly with distance behind the damping region.

  • An Elliptic model for calculating the combined refraction/diffraction of monochromatic linear waves is developed, including a term which allows for the dissipation of wave energy. Conjugate gradient method is employed as a solution technique. Wave height variations are calculated for localized circular and rectangular dissipation areas. It is shown that the numerical results agree very well with analytical solution in the case of circular damping region. The localized dissipation area creates a shadow region of low wave energy and the recovery of wave height by diffraction occurs very slowly with distance behind the damping region.

  • The performance of the energy density control algorithm for controlling a broadband noise is evaluated in a one-dimensional enclosure. To avoid noncausality problem of a control filter, which often happens in a frequency domain optimization, analyses presented in this paper are undertaken in the time domain. This approach provides the form of the causally constrained optimal controller. Numerical results are presented to predict the performance of the active noise control system, and indicate that imp개ved global attenuation of the broadband noise can be achieved by minimizing the energy density, rather than the squared pressure. It is shown that minimizing the energy density at a single location yields global attenuation results that are comparable to minimizing the potential energy. Furthermore, unlike the squared pressure control, the energy density control does not demonstrate any dependence on the error sensor location for this one-dimensional field. A practical implementation of the energy-based control algorithm is presented. Results show that the energy density control can be implemented using the two sensor technique with a tolerable margin of performance degradation.

  • The possibility of a broadband noise reduction of piezoelectric smart panels is experimentally studied. Piezoelectric smart panel is basically a plate structure on which piezoelectric patch with shunt circuits is mounted and sound absorbing material is bonded on the surface of the structure. Sound absorbing materials can absorb the sound transmitted at mid frequency region effectively while the use of piezoelectric shunt damping can reduce the transmission at resonance frequencies of the panel structure. To be able to tune the piezoelectric shunt circuit, the measured electrical impedance model is adopted. Resonant shunt circuit composed of register and inductor in stories is considered and the circuit parameters are determined based on maximizing the dissipated energy through the circuit. The transmitted noise reduction performance of smart panels is investigated using an acoustic tunnel. The tunnel is a square crosses sectional tunnel and a loud speaker is mounted at one side of the tunnel as a sound source. Panels are mounted in the middle of the tunnel and the transmitted sound pressure across the panels is measured. Noise reduction performance of a double smart panel possessing absorbing material and air gap shows a good result at mid frequency region except the first resonance frequency. By enabling the piezoelectric shunt damping, noise reduction is achieved at the resonance frequency as well. Piezoelectric smart panels incorporating passive method and piezoelectric shunt damping are a promising technology for noise reduction in a broadband frequency.

  • An intensity survey on the 13 December 1996 Yeogweol earthquake has mode for 262 locations throughout southern part of Korean peninsula, then we investigated attenuation properties in the south Korean region as well as intensities distribution. In this study, intensities are estimated to be from II to possibly VIII. The iso-seismal intensity map we obtained shows general pattern of intensity distribution in the south korean region quite clearly despite the inherent uncertainties included in the process of intensity estimation. In case of intensity larger than VI, considerable damages such as fracturing walls are frequently reported. One of the significant feature of this intensity map is, considering its magnitude 4.5 reported by KMA, the felt area is unusually large covering most of the Korean Peninsular except Cheju island. This result indicates either the magnitude is under estimated or the focal depth is much deeper than expected. Assuming indicates either the magnitude is under estimated or the focal depth is much deeper than expected. Assuming shallow earthquake whose focal depth is by iso-seismal contour lines for intensity IV to VII, respectively. To resolve this ambiguity, more reliable estimation of focal depth and magnitude by using telesesmic instrumental records should be made in the future.

  • A wave deformation model for general purpose combined refraction, diffraction, and breaking is developed in the shallow water. A parabolic approximation equation considered a higher order diffraction term is derived from the previous mild slope equation. A wave energy dissipation term due to bottom friction and breaking is introduced from the turbulence model. The Crank-Nicoloson implicit scheme is used in the numerical calculation, then the solutions are compared with the various hydraulic experiment data in the circular, the elliptic shoal, and the surf zone. The wave height decay in the surf zone is sensitively affected by the incident wave steepness, and the wave height variation around the elliptic shoal is well explained by the non-linear dispersion relation and the wave energy dissipation term. The model is also applied to a field coastal area and reasonable results are obtained.

  • WAM(WAve Model), deep water wave model has been extended to the region of shallow water, incorporating wave breaking, and triad wave interaction. To verify the model, numerical simulation of waves in Youngil bay, Pohang is performed and the simulated results show good agreements with measured wave data sets, one station at the mouth of bay and two stations inside the bay. As waves propagate toward the shore, wave height gradually diminishes by bottom friction and wave breaking, and wave direction, initially NE changes normal to the shore due to depth refraction.

  • The parametric study was performed for performance enhancement of wave energy converter(WEC) using a submerged pendulum plate. The wave exciting moment and hydrodynamic moment were obtained by means of eigenfunction expansion method based on the linear potential theory, and then the roll response of a pendulum plate and time averaged extracted power were investigated. The optimal PTO damping coefficient was suggested to give optimal extracted power. The peak value of optimal extracted power occurs at the resonant frequency. The resonant peak and it's width increase, as the height and thickness of a pendulum plate increase. The mooring line installed at the end of the pendulum plate is effective for extracting wave energy because it can not only induce the resonance with the waves of the installation site but also increase the restoring moment in case of PTO-on. The WEC using a rolling pendulum plate suitable for the shallow water acts as breakwater as well as energy extraction device.

  • In this paper, we have constructed singly resonant KTP OPO system pumped by 532 nm to obtain broadly frequency tunable pulses. Also we have mathematically simulated frequency tuning range, phase matching angle for 900 nm output and threshold energy, and we calculated output intensity using wave propagation equations for optical parametric oscillator which include walk-off, pump depletion.
