  • In the late 16th century, the Theatrum Anatomicum or anatomical theatre opened in Leiden in the Netherlands. The theatre was open to a fee-paying audience of students, surgeons, and the public and soon settled down as one of the highbrow cultural activities in the city. This trend soon spread into Amsterdam, and Nicholaes Tulp appearing in Rembrandt van Rijn's was at the center of it. Human anatomy was not just an eyesore but started to get accepted as a cultural event for the civilized citizens of the time. It was with this backdrop that Rembrandt got inspired by this interesting scene of Tulp dissecting human body. Rembrandt well understood the changes of the time and captured them on canvas to attempt convergence between science and art.

  • This paper examines university patenting activities as a commercialization of academic research. It shows how a number of university patents increase exponentially and how that can be, especially in terms of role of the state. In the late 1990, the Korean government supports the new vision of 'technological innovation' in establishing a science and technological policy and begins to perceive the importance of university R&D to overcome the economic crisis. Thus, an administrative, financial, and legal systems which support the university R&D are organized and the governmental grants for R&D increase exponentially, especially in promising new technologies(6T). Also, an institution for managing intellectual property rights is established in university. Universities assess professor's performance in terms of patent and license to encourage patenting activities. Thus the number of patents and its productivity increase exponentially. But the increase in patents takes place only to a dozen of universities, this means that a Matthew effect does work.

  • This study investigate the reasons of organizational failure in detection and appropriate response to risk signal. The Crisis does not come true suddenly, there is some risk signals in crisis. If Organization detect the risk signals the crisis is come true opportunities, if not the crisis is come true disastrous outcome. This is use the system dynamics approach. System Dynamics assume the system as a collection of causal feedback loop, so we understand the dynamics around the problems. This investigate suggest that, the focus on growth is the a kind of promotional pressure and the pressure drive the organization to less attention the risk signal, so the risk is underestimate In proportion to real risk. Ultimate, the organization entrap the promotional climate and insensible to security. This study is a kind of hypothesis-discovering research, in the further study, the discovered hypothesis will be empirically tested.

  • Bernays has not drawn scholarly attention that he deserves. Only quite recently, the reevaluation of his philosophy, including the projects of editing, translating, and reissuing his writings, has just started. As a part of this renaissance of Bernays studies, this article tries to distinguish carefully between Hilbert's and Bernays' views regarding the axiomatic method. We shall highlight the fact that Hilbert was so proud of his own axiomatic method on textual evidence. Bernays' estimation of the place of Hilbert's achievements in the history of the axiomatic method will be scrutinized. Encouraged by the fact that there are big differences between the early middle Bernays and the later Bernays in this matter, we shall contrast them vividly. The most salient difference between Hilbert and Bernays will shown to be found in the problem of the uniformity of the axiomatic method. In the same vein, we will discuss the later Bernays' criticism of Carnap, for Carnap's project of philosophy of science in the late 1950's seems to be a continuation and an extension of Hilbert's faith in the uniformity of the axiomatic method.

  • The task of author name disambiguation involves identifying an author with different names or different authors with the same name. The author name disambiguation is important for correctly assessing authors' research achievements and finding experts in given areas as well as for the effective operation of scholarly information services such as citation indexes. In the study, we performed error correction and normalization of data and applied rules-based author name disambiguation to compare with baseline machine learning disambiguation in order to see if human intervention could improve the machine learning performance. The improvement of over 0.1 in F-measure by the corrected and normalized email-based author name disambiguation over machine learning demonstrates the potential of human pattern identification and inference, which enabled data correction and normalization process as well as the formation of the rule-based diambiguation, to complement the machine learning's weaknesses to improve the author name disambiguation results.

  • IR(Institutional Repository) is an indispensable instrument for not only long time preservation of intellectual products but also for shifting commercial publishing company-dominated academic communication stream. In Korea, dCollection project of Ministry of education, science and technology has contributed on immediate, integrated circulation of distributed research products. dCollection is already one of the few integrating instrument for distributed academic resources, but it has not been university's voluntary instrument to announce their research accomplishments and to realize open access. On the other hand, Japanese government has promoted universities' IR operation through "Next generation infrastructure construction project." Even though distributing speed is relatively low, each university made ripe operating skill by their selves and realize its own purpose. This study comparatively analyzed policy and current status of Institutional Repository in Korea and Japan from various viewpoints. And also it proposed directions of development about Korean Institutional Repositories.

  • This study empirically examined the career orientations of researchers who worked for government-sponsored research institutes. Specifically, we considered the individual level's variables of age, project, and organization characteristics as the influential factors of researchers' career orientations and then investigated the relationship between career orientation and work attitudes. The results, based on the survey about 373 researchers, showed that both project career orientation and technical transfer career orientation were higher as grade level or age was higher. Moreover, the preference of career orientation was changed according to the mission of institute and the project type. Finally, the study suggested some practical implications on career development management for government-sponsored research institutes and discussed the limitations and the further research directions on career development of researchers.
