Adaptation to Baby Schema Features and the Perception of Facial Age (인물 얼굴의 나이 판단과 아기도식 속성에 대한 순응의 잔여효과)

  • Using the adaptation aftereffect paradigm, this study investigated whether adaptation to baby schema features of the face and body could affect facial age perceptions. In Experiment 1, participants were asked to determine whether the test faces that morphed at a certain ratio of a baby face and an adult face were perceived as 'baby' or 'adult' after being adapted to either a baby or an adult face. The result of Experiment 1 showed that after being adapted to baby faces, test faces were assessed as belonging to an adult more often than when being adapted to adult faces. In the subsequent experiments, participants carried out the same facial age judgment task after being adapted to baby or adult body silhouettes (Experiment 2) or hand images (Experiment 3). The results revealed that age perceptions were biased in the direction of the adaptors (i.e., an assimilative aftereffect) after adaptation to body silhouettes (Experiment 2) but did not change after being adapted to hands (Experiment 3). The present study showed that contrastive aftereffects in the perception of facial age were induced by adaptation to the baby face but failed to determine the cross-category transfer of age adaptation from hands or body silhouettes to faces.

The Congruent Effects of Gesture and Facial Expression of Virtual Character on Emotional Perception: What Facial Expression is Significant? (가상 캐릭터의 몸짓과 얼굴표정의 일치가 감성지각에 미치는 영향: 어떤 얼굴표정이 중요한가?)

  • In the design and develop a virtual character, it is important to correctly deliver target emotions generated by the combination of facial expression and gesture. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of congruent/incongruent between gesture and facial expression on target emotion. In this study four emotions, joy, sadness, fear, and anger, are applied. The results of study showed that sadness emotion were incorrectly perceived. Moreover, it was perceived as anger instead of sadness. Sadness can be easily confused when facial expression and gestures were simultaneously presented. However, in the other emotional status, the intended emotional expressions were correctly perceived. The overall evaluation of virtual character's emotional expression was significantly low when joy gesture was combined with sad facial expression. The results of this study suggested that emotional gesture is more influential correctly to deliver target emotions to users. This study suggested that social cues like gender or age of virtual character should be further studied.

Context Modulation Effect by Affective Words Influencing on the Judgment of Facial Emotion (얼굴정서 판단에 미치는 감정단어의 맥락조절효과)

  • Current research explores the effect of language on the perception of facial emotion as suggested by the psychological construction theory of emotion by using a psychophysical method. In this study, we hypothesize that the perception of facial expression may be influenced if the observer is shown an affective word before he/she judges an expression. Moreover, we suggest that his/her understanding of a facial emotion will be in line with the conceptual context that the word denotes. During the two experiments conducted for this project, a control stimulus or words representing either angry or happy emotions were briefly presented to participants before they were shown a target face. These target faces were randomly selected from seven faces that were gradually morphed to show neutral to angry (in Experiment 1) and neutral to happy (in Experiment 2) expressions. The participants were asked to perform a two-alternative forced choice (2AFC) task to judge the emotion of the target face (i.e., decide whether it is angry or neutral, or happy or neutral). The results of Experiment 1 (when compared with the control condition) showed that words denoting anger decreased the point of subjective equality (PSE) for judging the emotion of the target as anger, whereas words denoting happiness increased the PSE. Experiment 2, in which participants had to judge expressions on a scale from happy to neutral, produced a contrasting pattern of results. The outcomes of this study support the claim of the psychological construction theory of emotion that the perception of facial emotion is an active construction process that may be influenced by information (such as affective words) that provide conceptual context.

Affective conceptual components of facial beauty (아름다운 얼굴의 감성적 구성 개념)

  • 한국인 20대 여성 얼굴을 대표하는 30개 얼굴의 감성 형용사 평정을 통해 아름다운 얼굴의 감성 특징을 파악하였다. 얼굴 감성을 나타내는 14개 형용사 평정에 대해 주성분 분석을 실시한 결과 얼굴 감성은 샤프 요인과 소프트 요인으로 나뉘며, 사람들이 소프트한 느낌보다 샤프한 느낌을 지닌 얼굴을 더 아름답다고 느끼는 것으로 나타났다. 아름다운 얼굴의 감성 특징 검증을 위해 얼굴 합성법을 이용하여 합성한 이미지에 대해 얼굴 미모와 감성 형용사 평정을 실시하였다. '상위 평균' 이미지는 '전체 평균' 이미지보다, 전체 평균과 상위 평균의 얼굴 특징 차이를 50% 과장한 '상위+50' 이미지는 '상위 평균' 이미지보다 유의미하게 더 아름다운 것으로 평정되었다. 합성 얼굴의 감성 평정 결과 '전체 평균' 이미지는 소프트 감성에서 높은 평정을 받았으며, '상위 평균' 이미지는 샤프 감성, '상위150'이미지는 두 감성 요인을 모두 지니는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 샤프 혹은 소프트 중 하나의 감성 요인이 두드러진 얼굴보다 두 가지 감성 요인 모두에서 높은 평정을 받은 얼굴을 더욱 아름답다고 지각하는 것을 암시한다.

The analysis of relationships between facial impressions and physical features (얼굴 인상과 물리적 특징의 관계 구조 분석)

  • We analyzed the relationships between facial impressions and physical features, and investigated the effects of impressions on facial similarity judgments. Using 79 faces extracted from a face database, we collected the ratings of impressions along four dimensions -mild-fierce, bright-dull, feminine-manly and youthful-mature- and the measures of 41 physical features. Multiple Regression Analyses showed that the ratings of impressions and the measures of features are closely connected with each other. Our experiments using facial similarity judgments confirmed the possibility that facial impressions are used in processing of facial information. We found that people tend to perceive faces as similar when they have the same impressions rather than neutral ones, although all of them are alike physically. These results imply that facial impressions are used as a psychological structure representing facial appearance, and that facial processing includes impression information.

  • 사람의 신체 중 손, 발, 얼굴 부위는 오장육부와 관련이 있다. 이 중 발은 '제2의 심장'이라고까지 불러지고 있다. 이러한 내용은 발의 건강이 인체의 건강을 유지할 수 있고 혈액순환에도 중요하다는 의미도 있다. 본 논문에서는 발 지압점에서도 신장과 관련된 지압점이 있다는 내용을 기반으로 발 지압을 통한 얼굴의 색상 수치 변화를 분석하였다. 특히, 얼굴 부위 중 신장을 나타내는 지각 부위의 Lab 색체계에서 L값과 CMYK 색체계에서 K값의 변화를 분석하였다. 결론적으로 신장 발지압 자극에 따른 지각 부위의 색상 변화를 통한 지압의 효과성을 객관적으로 입증하는 실험을 수행하였다.

  • 표정인식 시스템을 구현하기 위해서는 어떠한 얼굴 특징점이 특정한 내적상태와 밀접한 관련이 있는가를 알아야한다. 이를 위해 MPEG-4 FDP 중 39개의 얼굴 특징점을 사용하여 쾌-불쾌 및 각성-수면의 내적상태와 얼굴 특징요소간의 상관관계를 분석하였다. 연극배우들의 다양한 표정연기 사진 150장으로부터, 5개의 필터 크기와 8개의 필터 방위로 구성된 Gator wavelet을 사용하여 39개의 특징점을 중심으로 영상처리 하였다. 이들 특징점의 필터 반응 값과 내적상태의 상관관계를 분석한 결과, 내적상태의 쾌-불쾌 차원은 주로 입과 눈썹 주변의 특징점과 밀접한 관련이 있었고, 각성-수면 차원은 주로 눈 주변의 특징점과 밀접한 관련이 있었다. 필터의 크기는 주로 저역 공간빈도 필터가 내적상태와 관련이 있었고, 필터의 방위는 주로 비스듬한 사선 방위가 내적상태와 관련이 있었다.

Facial Feature Localization from 3D Face Image using Adjacent Depth Differences (인접 부위의 깊이 차를 이용한 3차원 얼굴 영상의 특징 추출)

  • This paper describes a new facial feature localization method that uses Adjacent Depth Differences(ADD) in 3D facial surface. In general, human recognize the extent of deepness or shallowness of region relatively, in depth, by comparing the neighboring depth information among regions of an object. The larger the depth difference between regions shows, the easier one can recognize each region. Using this principal, facial feature extraction will be easier, more reliable and speedy. 3D range images are used as input images. And ADD are obtained by differencing two range values, which are separated at a distance coordinate, both in horizontal and vertical directions. ADD and input image are analyzed to extract facial features, then localized a nose region, which is the most prominent feature in 3D facial surface, effectively and accurately.

Children's Interpretation of Facial Expression onto Two-Dimension Structure of Emotion (정서의 이차원 구조에서 유아의 얼굴표정 해석)

  • This study explores children's categories of emotion understanding from facial expressions onto two dimensional structure of emotion. Children of 89 from 3 to 5 years old were required to those facial expressions related the fourteen emotion terms. Facial expressions applied for experiment are used the photographs rated the degree of expression in each of the two dimensions (pleasure-displeasure dimension and arousal-sleep dimension) on a nine-point scale from 54 university students. The experimental results showed that children indicated the greater stability in arousal dimension than stability in pleasure-displeasure dimension. Emotions about sadness, sleepiness, anger and surprise onto two dimensions was understand very well, but emotions about fear, boredom were showed instability in pleasure-displeasure dimension. Specifically, 3 years old children indicated highly the perception in a degree of arousal-sleep than perception of pleasure-displeasure.

The Face Color Analysis According to the Kidney Foot Acupressure Stimulation (신장 발 지압 자극에 따른 얼굴 색상 분석)

  • Human body such as hands, foots and face are related with five organs. Particularly, foots are called 'second cardiac'. In this paper, we should like to analyze changes of facial color according to stimulation kidney associated foot acupressure point. To this end, we collected facial image of before and after of kidney associated foot acupressure point to normal kidney 20s male in 10 then we measured K of CMYK color system with L of Lab color system in JIGAK area associated kidney of facial area. As a result of us experiment, after stimulation of kidney associated foot acupressure point, L is increased and K is decreased in 90% of subjects. Finally, the effectiveness of this paper is demonstrated with several experiments.
