  • To investigate the anti-inflammatory activity of the grains of sorghum, three Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench variants (Hwanggeumchal, Huinchal, and Chal) being cultivated in Korea, the 80% ethanol (EtOH) extracts of individual sorghum grains were compared for their inhibitory activity against nitric oxide (NO) production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 murine macrophage cell line. Among them, the EtOH extract of sorghum Hwanggeumchal grains could exert the highest inhibitory effect on the LPS-induced NO production. However, under these conditions, the viability of RAW264.7 cells was not affected. When the EtOH extract of sorghum Hwanggeumchal grains was sequentially fractionated with n-hexane, methylene chloride (MC), ethyl acetate (EtOAc), and n-butanol, the anti-NO production activity was predominantly detected in both MC and EtOAc fractions. In particular, treatment with the MC fraction reduced dose-dependently the expression levels of iNOS, COX-2 and pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α) in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. Simultaneously, the MC fraction could prevent LPS-induced activating phosphorylation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK). HPLC analysis of the MC fraction showed gentisic acid and naringenin as the major phenolic components. Both gentisic acid and naringenin commonly exhibited a potent inhibitory activity against LPS-induced NO production in RAW264.7 cells. Together, these results provide the evidence of the inhibitory activity of Hwanggeumchal grains on LPS-induce inflammatory responses in RAW264.7 murine macrophage cells and also suggest that sorghum grains possess beneficial health effects which can be applicable in development of the grain-based functional foods.

  • A pot experiment on the Sr-90 uptake by the barley from a loamy-sandy soil of pH 6.05 treated with Sr-90 and slaked lime was carried out in a green house. The rate of Sr-90 uptake at maturity was, on an average, 0.41% for a naked barley Neolssalbori and 0.23% for a covered one Olbori. Transfer coefficients of Sr-90 for the former were higher than those for the latter by about 30-60% depending on the plant parts. There were, on the whole, not significant differences in the rate and in the coefficient among Sr-90 concentration treatments. Slaked lime addition equivalent to about 94kg/10a was not effective for lessening Sr-90 uptake or diminishing Sr-90 transfer coefficient. As transfer coefficients, 1.51, 4.45, 0.35, and 1.30, on the dry weight basis, could be proposed for the stem, leaf, seed, and whole top of the barley, respectively. Growth inhibition or yield decrease due to Sr-90 uptake was not observed.

  • Barley straw is a good source of organic matter for next crop growth following barley. This study was conducted to investigate effects of barley straw application methods (application, removal, or incineration) on growth and yield in soybean cultivation following barley. A soybean variety, Eunhakong, was sown on 12 June with drill-seeder attached to tractor after tillage. Barley straw application resulted in increase in organic matter content compared to removal and incineration of barley straw, and soil physical properties such as water content and porosity, were improved by application and incineration of barley straw. Weed occurrence was deterred by 44% in barley straw application and by 31% in barley straw incineration compared with removal of barley straw. Number and dry weight of soybean nodules were move abundant in barley straw application than the other treatments at 4 and R2 stages. Barley straw application had less for dry weight than barley straw removal but greater than incineration of barley straw about 30 days after seeding. However barley straw application caused greater top dry weight 90 days after seeding. Root dry weight was not affected by barley straw application method at all growth stage. There're no significant differences in soybean yield among barley straw application methods.

  • The effect of leaf water content on apparent photosynthesis and respiration of tobacco plants(five varieties) was studied under the condition without the irrigation for 10 days after the plants were sufficiently watered on the first day. The wild race (N. longiflora) among varieties showed highest apparent photosynthesis (AP) and AP had a positive correlation with specific leaf weight. N. longiflora and Andongyeob were different in their AP from the other varieties significantly under the water stress condition. Respiration rate also decreased to be simillar to AP except slight increase at early stage of water deficit. The stomatal resistance and the mesophyll resistance increased in the stressed plants. The water stress resistant character seems to be mainly due to open stomata.

  • Greenhouse crop production under critical summer climate In Korea has considerable difficulties because of high temperature and relative humidity. In this study, some water pipes were tested as a means of the dehumidification and increment of evaporative cooling efficiency. As a result of heat transfer characteristic analysis, overall heat transfer coefficient of copper pipe was larger than steel pipe, and estimated values were smaller than measured values. The condensed quantities of vapor were not significantly different between copper pipe and steel pipe, however dehumidifying effect by the water pipes was significantly large. It was estimated based on the results that the evaporative cooling system by the water pipe will be able to increase the evaporative cooling efficiency of about 48%, and decrease the temperature of about 1.3$^{\circ}C$.

  • Trichoderma spp. are the aggressive causal agents for green mold disease on oyster mushroom (Pleurotus spp.) cultivation. Antifungal bacteria (KATB 99121, KATB 99122 and KATB 99123 strains) were isolated from the compost for Pleurotus ostreatus. Among these bacterial strains, KATB 99121 strain showed an excellent inhibitory activity to the pathogens for green molds such as T. harzianum, T. viride and T. hamatum and an animal pathogen, Candida albicans, but did not affect on the culture of Pleurotus ostreatus (2209, Chunchu 2 and Wonhyung strains). KATB 99121 strain secreted amylolytic, proteolytic and cellulolytic exoenzymes. KATB 99122 and KATB 99123 strains excreted amylolytic, proteolytic, cellulolytic, lipolytic exoenzymes and showed ${\beta}$-glucosidase activity. Further studies will be conducted on the development of microbial fungicides using the antagonistic bacteria for the control of green mold disease on Pleurotus spp.

  • A very destructive lily disease was occurred at Daekwallyong alpine areas in 1999. We have performed experiments to identify the causal pathogen of lily disease and to find a way to control the disease chemically. Twelve fungal isolates from the infected lily were identified as Phytophthora cactorum. Mycelial growth of all isolates were completely inhibited on potato dextrose agar with $10{\mu}g/mL$ metalaxyl. Among 11 fungicides tested, $10{\mu}g/mL$ of dimethomorph, ethaboxam, and oxadixyl inhibited mycelial growth of P. cactorum. PC-1. Therefore, spray of phenylamide fungicides such as metalaxyl and other commercial fungicides should be a effective way to control the Phytophthora blight of lily.
