Omega-3 unsaturated fatty acids, including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are found in fish and fish oil. Recent studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids are effective in cancer, cardiovascular disease, immune system, cirrhosis, and nervous system disorders. In particular, omega-3 was also reported to help improve hyperlipidemia and liver function tests. On the other hand, there are few cases in Korea. This study examined whether omega-3 is effective in improving hyperlipemia and liver function by taking 1 gm/day for 2 weeks. As a result, AST was decreased in the liver function test, and GGT related to alcoholic hepatitis and fatty liver showed significant results. Omega-3 has been shown to help improve the liver function. The triglyceride, total cholesterol, and low density cholesterol associated with cardiovascular disease decreased after omega-3 ingestion, particularly high density cholesterol. Omega-3 has also been shown to improve the hyperlipidemia. Comparisons between males and females before and after the ingestion of omega-3 showed significant results in AST (P<0.01) from the male group and in GGT (P<0.01) and high density cholesterol (P<0.01) from the female group. As a result, omega-3 intake can help control and improve liver function and hyperlipidemia.
A biological active substance was isolated from the cultured medium of Streptomyces sp. and its biochemical characteristics were investigated. Isolation process of the substance was as follows; the pH of filterate of the cultured medium was adjusted to 3.0 with N-hydrochloric acid and saturated with sodium chloride, then chloroform was added to this filterate in one fifth portions and stirred vigorously. After extracting the active substance with chloroform in 3 stages, the chloroform layer combined and evaporatea after dehydrating with sodium sulfate. The substance was found to be to be toxic to various fresh water fishes; the lethal dose for an average size Pseudorasbora parva T. et. S. was 50ug per ml. In the acidic condition, the toxicity of the substance remained fora long time, while in the alkaline state, the toxicity was decreased very fast. This substance was found to be stable to organic solvents, but labile to heat treatment. The maximal revival time of Pseudorasbora parva T. et. S. was about 20 minutes in 25 ug/ml of the substance solution.

We investigated the effects of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) on the fatty acid composition in the plasma and liver, and the expressions of delta-5 desaturase (D5D) and fatty acid desaturase2 (FADS2) genes in ICR male mice using two different sources of fats in the diets. The experimental groups were divided into four groups: beef tallow (BT) and fish oil (FO), BT with CLA supplementation (BTC), and FO with CLA supplementation (FOC) groups. Ten mice in each group were fed with the experimental diets for 4 weeks. All mice were fed experimental diets containing 12% of total dietary fat (w/w) either with or without 0.5% CLA (w/w). Fatty acid compositions were analyzed in the plasma and liver using gas chromatography. The levels of D5D and FADS2 expression were analyzed by RT-PCR in the liver The results showed that CLA participates competitively with C18:2 in the elongation and desaturation processes, leading to significant increase in the levels of C20:4 and C22:6 in BTC group (p<0.05). The expression levels of D5D and FADS2 were higher in BT and BTC group than those of FO and FOC group. In particular, the expression of D5D gene was greatly upregulated in BTC group. Furthermore, the conversion ratios from C18:2 to C20:4 in the liver were higher in BTC group than those in other groups. Thus our results suggest that increased expressions of DSD and FADS2 genes may be responsible for the enhanced CLA effects on the desaturation in the BT containing saturated fatty acids rather than the FO rich in n-3 PUFA.
Fatty acid fraction rich in ${\omega}-3$ polyunsaturated fatty acids (${\omega}-3$, PUFA), especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) could be obtained by saponification of fish oil in ethanol containing alkali hydroxide followed by cooling and filtration of the resultant solution. Fatty acid compositions of fish oil and the concentrates suggest that the ratio of number of double bonds to carbon number in a fatty acid molecule is a more important factor than the degree of unsaturation or the chain length in determining the solubility of fatty acid salts in ethanol. Water content in ethano1 affected significantly the efficiency of the separation with respect to yield and content of EPA and DHA in the concentrates; the lower the water content, the higher the efficiency. It was, however, influenced little by cooling procedure and temperature which the saponified solution experienced during the crystallization. Under an optimal condition, the contents of EPA and DHA in the concentrate increased by 2.4 and 2.5 times, respectively, as compared with those in sardine oil.

Despite a wide range of fatty acids in fish oil, its the usage are very limited owing to off-flavors and volatile compounds in the oil. A way to extract and remove volatile compounds was performed at a semi-flow extractor by using supercritical carbon dioxide $(SC-CO_2)$. Samples of the oil were treated at the conditions which ranged from $30\;to\;80^{\circ}C$ and from 80 to 200 bar with 10 mL/min flow rate of carbon dioxide. In the oil the volatile compounds were analyzed by gas chromatography. Before extraction with $SC-CO_2$ the oil sample was detected over 129 peaks but 99 compounds were identified. The results demonstrated that at $40^{\circ}C$ and 200 bar extraction condition the volatile compounds in the tuna fish oil were removed, except for 14 compounds identified after extraction and other $SC-CO_2$ extraction conditions reached to high reduction of the volatile compounds.

The thinning effects of lime sulfur either alone or combined with fish oil on two apple cultivars 'Fuji'/M.9 and 'Hongro'/M.9 were investigated during two consecutive seasons. Either 1% or 2% lime sulfur at full bloom decreased the amounts of both terminal and axillary fruits compared with unsprayed 'Fuji' control trees in the first year. However, 1% or 2% lime sulfur did not decrease terminal fruit set in the second year. Only, triple applications of 1% lime sulfur significantly reduced the number of terminal and axillary fruits in both years. Multiple application of 1% lime sulfur was the most effective in thinning of 'Hongro'. In the first year, double or triple applications of 1% lime sulfur was effective in thinning terminal or axillary fruit, but one time applications of 1% or 2% lime sulfur was not reduced axillary fruit in 'Hongro' apple trees. In the second season, all treatments reduced terminal or axillary fruit in 'Hongro' clusters, except single application of 1% lime sulfur. Fish oil did not always improve the thinning effects of lime sulfur in 'Fuji' or 'Hongro' apple trees. None of treatments caused significant russeting in the harvested fruits. Most of thinning treatments had little effect on 'Fuji' or 'Hongro' fruit quality in terms of fruit weight, firmness, soluble solids concentration or titratable acidity.

This study was planned to compare the effects of source of dietary n-3 fatty acids, i.e., tuna oil and perilla oil, on mitogenesis and production of prostaglandin E$_2$ and leukotriene B$_4$ in rats. Weaning male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed 3 different experimental diets for 4 weeks(Control: beef tallow 50% + sesame oil 50%, FO : beef tallow 50% + sesame oil 25% + tuna oil(27% docosahexaenoic acid) 25%, PO : beef tallow 50% + sesame oil 25% + perilla oil 25%). Food intakes were higher in FO group than in other groups, but body weight gains, food efficiency rates and weights of spleen were not different among groups. Proliferation of splenocyte to PWM(pokeweedmitogen) was higher in FO and PO group than control group. But there was no difference between FO and PO group. Response to ConA was not different among three groups. Serum PGE$_2$ levels were higher in control group than other groups. Serum LKB$_4$ levels were not different among groups. Therefore, it seemed that n-3 fatty acids increased the immune response by means of decreasing the PGE$_2$ production.
Effects of the various dietary additives on growth and tolerance of abalone Haliotis discus hannai to the stresses were determined in the 16-week feeding trial. Seventy juvenile (an initial body weight of 4.2 g) abalone per container were randomly distributed into 21, 50 L plastic rectangular containers each. The six kinds of experimental diets were prepared: control (CON) with no additive, by-product of green tea (BPG), extract of figs (EF), extract of green tea (EG), commercially available product of Hearok (PH), and Haematococcus (HC). In addition, dry sea tangle (ST) was prepared to compare the efficiency of the experimental diets. Fishmeal, soybean meal and shrimp head meal were used as the protein source, and dextrin, sea tangle powder and wheat flour, and soybean oil and fish oil were used as the carbohydrate and lipid sources, respectively in the experimental diets. The experimental diets were fed to abalone once a day at a satiation level with a little leftover. The feeding trial lasted for 16 weeks. At the end of the 16-week feeding trial, abalone was exposed to the different types of stresses (air exposure, and sudden changes of rearing temperature and salinity). Survival of abalone fed the sea tangle was highest. However, weight gain of abalone fed the EF, EG and PH diets was significantly (P<0.05) higher than that of abalone fed the BPG diet or dry sea tangle. Shell length of abalone fed the all experimental diets was significantly (P<0.05) higher than that of abalone fed the dry sea tangle. Accumulated mortality of abalone fed the sea tangle was low when exposed to the different types of stresses. Also, relatively low mortality was achieved in abalone fed the HC and EF diets. In considering these results, it can be concluded that the various sources of additives is effective to improve production of abalone, and Haematococcus and extract of figs can be considered as dietary additives to improve resistance of abalone against the different types of stresses.
Four Holstein cows were used in a 4 ${\times}$ 4 Latin square experiment to study effects of fat sources on rumen metabolism and digestibility of nutrients. All cows were fed a total mixed diets containing 60% silage and 40% concentrate. The four concentrates were formulated to contain either Megalac(MEG), formaldehyde-treated whole linseed(LIN), a mixture (50 : 50, oil basis) of fish oil and formaldehyde-treated whole linseed(MIX), or no fat source in the concentrate but 500g per day of linseed oil being infused into the duodemm (OIL). The rumen pH was lowest in OIL among the treatments(P < 0.05), but ammonia N concentration in the rumen was not significantly different among the treatments. The differences of total VFA, acetate, propionate, iso-butyrate and iso-valerate concentrations were not significant among the treatments. While, butyrate and valerate were highest in OIL and lowest in MEG(P < 0.05 and P <0.01, respectively). In addition, A:P ratio was also highest in OIL and lowest in MEG(P < 0.05). As expected, intake of nutrients(DM, OM, NDF and ADF) was lowest in OIL among the treatments(P < 0.01). However, all nutrients flow to the duodenum, and digestion in the rumen and total tract were not significantly different among the treatments. Intake of N was highest in MEG, but lowest in OIL treatment(P < 0.01). Duodenal flow of total N, nonammonia N and microbial N was not significantly different across the treatments. In addition, microbial synthesis and ammonia N and total N digestibility were not affected by different dietary fat sources. The present results show that fermentative characteristic and microbial efficiency in the rumen, and nutrients digestibility in the rumen and total tract were not depressed by supplementation of as much as 6% dietary fat sources.
The present study was directed to investigate the antioxidative effects of onion and mustard powder extracts on fish oil. The oxidative changes of sardine oil with and without onion and mustard powder extract were estimated by measuring peroxide value (POV), thiobarbituric acid (TBA) value, weighing method, acid value (AV) and fatty acid composition, periodically. The results obtained are summarized as follows ; From view point of POV, fat soluble fraction of onion and mustard powder showed much inhibitory effect on the oxidation of sardine oil, marked induction period to be prolonged about 18 and 20 days, respectively. But the POV in fat soluble fraction of mustard powder increased remarkably in the early stage of storage, so it did not show inhibitory effect on the oxidation of sardine oil. In the TBA value of sardine oil during storage, the water soluble fraction of onion and mustard powder were more slowly increased than other fractions. The weighing change of sardine oil, contained in the water soluble fraction of mustard powder, was slower than other fractions, marking $0.5\%$ of weight gain during 30 day storage. On the other hand water and $80\%$ ethanol soluble fractions of onion were marked $2.3\%\;and\;5.8\%$ of weight gain during 30 day storage. In the oxidative degradation of docosahexaenoic acid, water soluble fractions of mustard powder and onion extracts showed the strongest inhiditory effect.
