The charantin contents of leaves, stems, female and male flowers, and fruits in bitter gourd (Momordica charantia) were analyzed at different harvest seasons to investigate the availability of potential edible parts other than fruits. The charantin contents of fruits ranged from 14.7 to $16.0mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$ dry weight (DW) and those of leaves ranged from 131.4 to $138.0mg{\cdot}g^{-1}DW$, which was eight times higher than in fruits. The charantin contents of female and male flowers and stems were also significantly higher than those of the fruits. The ratio of total charantin content was highest in leaves (48%) of DW, followed by female flowers (20-21%), male flowers (14%), stems (12-13%), and fruits (5%). The charantin contents of fruits harvested 14 days after fruit setting was higher in June to mid-July (20.2 to $23.3mg{\cdot}g^{-1}DW$) than in late July to late August (13.3 to $19.4mg{\cdot}g^{-1}DW$). The higher the fruit weight, the lower the charantin contents, which showed that a negative correlation exists between fruit weight and charantin contents in bitter gourd. These results suggest that to obtain bitter gourd fruits with high charantin contents, fruits should be harvested until mid-July when fruit growth is fast and temperature is high. In addition, leaves, stems, and female and male flowers of bitter gourd can be used as for food, which are known to reduce blood sugar level.
We investigate the star formation rate, stellar mass, and gas-phase metallicity of local starburst galaxies with different star formation time scales based on their optical spectra. The observation is made using the longslit spectrograph attached to the 4K CCD on the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory 1.8m telescope, targeting 21 Wolf-Rayet galaxies as young starbursts and 13 UV excess galaxies as slightly older starbursts. A Baldwin-Phillips-Terlevich diagram analysis shows that 50% of the observed targets are pure star-forming galaxies while only 15% are classified as Active Galactic Nuclei. Fraction of galaxies that reside in composite region is higher in UV excess galaxies than in Wolf-Rayet galaxies, suggesting that the AGN development requires extra time after the onset of the star formation. Most of the observed starburst galaxies have stellar masses of $10^{9-11}M_{\odot}$ and stellar formation rates of $0.01-100M_{\odot}yr^{-1}$, and their star formation rates are consistent with that of the SDSS star forming main sequence galaxies of similar stellar mass. There is no significant difference between Wolf-Rayet galaxies and UV excess galaxies in terms of the stellar mass and star formation rate. We also see a mass-metallicity relation for local starbursts with slightly lower metallicity for a given stellar mass, which implies the existence of a strong feedback activity due to the star formation in these galaxies.

Mites were collected from organic cultivations of greenhouse cucumbers and identified as Tyrophagus neiswanderi (Acari: caridae). T. neiswanderi (length, $490.1{\mu}m;$ width, $288.1{\mu}m$) is a very small, milky-white, and egg-shaped mite, and it mainly causes damage to the leaves, flowers, and fruits of cucumber plants. In the early growing season of cucumbers, the shoots of seedlings became pale and yellow because of T. neiswanderi, and eventually shrinkage or bud-failing was observed in the plants. In the middle of the growing season, T. neiswanderi caused white spots on the leaves and flowers of the plants, and the spots gradually became holes. T. neiswanderi also caused severe damage to young fruits by feeding on the rinds of the fruits, inducing malformations and lowering the economic value.
As sprout vegetables of interest growing, its maintaining the quality of the technology was needed to solve the problem of increasing growth and maintain quality after harvest. This experiment proved that the quality of radish sprout vegetable was affected by CO2 treatment during cultivation. Thus, the effect of CO2 treatment during cultivation on postharvest quality of radish sprout vegetable was investigated in terms of the quality changes in weight loss, gas partial pressure, SPAD, hue angle external appearance during storage at polypropylene film (thickness 30 ㎛) at 10℃. CO2 treatment used the way to gas with 700 ppm or carbonated water with 700 ppm and 1,400 ppm. The study revealed that growths on CO2 treated plant were more than those of non-treatment on stem length. After harvesting, the CO2 treated plant and control growing little different characteristics on fresh weight, plant length and so on. However, there were no differences between the CO2 treated plant and control on the Fv/Fm and SOD (superoxide dismutase). In gas partial pressure, the O2 consumption and CO2 accumulation of the CO2 treated plant tended to be more than that of non-treated plant. This study also checked that after packaging, the effects of CO2 treatment during cultivation on the quality of radish sprout vegetable was not significant. However, there were tended to CO2 treatments were lower value compared to control on SPAD, hue angle and general appearance. CO2 treatments of radish sprouting vegetable before harvest were improve growth of stem length, but ones were not improving the maintain of quality on radish sprout vegetable during shelf-life period. The results indicated that CO2 treatment only affected stem elongation until radish sprout vegetable its growth.
Fludioxonil is derived from the antifungal compound pyrrolnitrin produced by Pseudomonas pyrrocinia and classified as a reduced-risk fungicide by the US EPA. The efficacy of fludioxonil for the control of lettuce gray mold caused by Botrytis cinerea was evaluated under several conditions such as growth stages of host, inoculum concentrations, and amounts of potato dextrose broth (PDB) included in spore suspension of B. cinerea. At 4-leaf stage of lettuce plants, fludioxonil applied at 2 ${\mu}g$/ml was more effective for the control of gray mold than at 5- and 6-leaf stages. However, fludioxonil at more than 10 ${\mu}g$/ml provided similar control activity in all growth stages of lettuce tested. The fungicide (10 and 50 ${\mu}g$/ml) also gave excellent control of gray mold on lettuce seedlings inoculated with spore suspensions of B. cinerea ($2.5{\times}10^5$ to $2{\times}10^6$ spores/ml). But, control efficacy of fludioxonil (2 ${\mu}g$/ml) was negatively correlated with inoculum concentration. Addition of PDB in spore suspension of B. cinerea resulted in higher disease severity than non-treated control. By inoculating spore suspension including 0.5% PDB, the fungicide gave the most control activity on the disease, followed by 1% and 2% PDB. The results suggest that fludioxonil has potential to control gray mold of lettuce, but the fungicide at a concentration having moderate activity may represent low control efficacy on the disease under some conditions.
In the event a population of animals is exposed to ionizing radiation, proper disposition of animals will minimize loss to the farmer and protect the public from unwholesome meat and dairy products. Clinical response is an important factor in considering salvage of animals for food following exposure to ionizing radiation whether the dose is lethal or not. It is the purpose of this report to present the discussions of blood picture and growth of y ung growing rabbits exposed to cobalt-60 gamma-irradiation. The experimental animals were Hyrnalayan rabbits of 65 days old. The body weight for all animals of the time of irradiation was approximately 450g. The 96 rabbits used in the experiment were allotted t groups of eight. Rabbits in one group served as controls and the others were exposed to single doses of 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600 and 700 Roentgens (R). The exposure does rate averaged 15 R per minute. Central blood was obtained by heart puncture. Erythrocyte and leukocyte enumerations and, determinations of hemoglobin in blood and hematocrit value were made in the usual manner. Erythrocyte counts, concentrations of hemoglobin in blood, and hematocrit readings dropped to the lowest value between 1 and 4 weeks postirradiation, returning towards the control values. But recovery was not complete at the time of the last determination on 6 weeks postirradiation. There was a progressive decrease with increasing radiation does in the above values. Mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration were not affected by the irradiation. After irradiation of each does the numbers of total leukocyte and the absolute numbers of various types of white cell began to decrease rapidly, and reached a minimum after 2 weeks, returning towards normal levels. But recovery was not complete at the time of the last determination on 6 weeks postirradiation. The reductions in total leukocyte and differential counts as the radiation does increases were apparent. Relative neutrophilia was observed in each irradiated group because of more expense of lymphocytes after irradiation. Growth rate of the rabbits was not affected by 100 R of whloe-body irradiation, while rabbits irradiated with 200, 300, 400 and 500 R showed marked depression of growth rate. As the radiation does increases, a depression of growth rate was apparent. The rabbits exposed to 600 and 700 R ceased from growing and recovery was not recognized during the experimental period.
This study was conducted to investigate inhibitory effects of K-casein, GMP and sialic acid addition on the infection of MA-104 cells by 597(Korean native cattle rotavirus) and JBR(Jeju island bovine rotavirus). MA-104 cells on incomplete Ml99 were infected with domestically separated 597 and ma activated by incubating at 37$\^{C}$ for 6 days, and analyzed for the titer of rotavirus. K-casein, GMP and sialic acid added MA-104 culture infected by activated S97 and nan were incubated for Is hours and stained by the AEC stainning method. The number of infected cells were counted on microscope. The titer of S97 and JBR was 2.5$\times$107 and 2.0$\times$106 PFU/ml, respectively. The inhibition level against cell infection by 597 was 97.4% far 2000UH of K-casein and 97.44% for 2000UM of GMP. The inhibition level against cell infection by JBR was 99.52% for 2000$\mu$M of $\kappa$-casein and 99.78% for 2000$\mu$M of GMP. The inhibition level against cell infection by 597 and JBR was 3.85 and 3.63% for 2000$\mu$M of sialic acid, respectively. The high inhibitory effects (over 97%) of K-casein and CMP against infection of U-1(14 cells with 597 and mR indicated great potentials for the use of K-casein and GMP in the treatment of calf or infant caused by rotavirus.

The assessment (or the evaluation) of spatial disparity is the main concern for the study of spatial disparities or spatial inequalities. In order to evaluate the spatial disparity, the regional differences have to be counted quantitatively. Several measurements have been introduced for evaluating the development potentials of each region. Most of them are the composite indices of the socio-economic variables rather than the real potentials of the region. This study attempts to investigate the spatial disparity in Korea. For the purpose, the levels of opportunity potentials of the cities have been calculated by the Potential Model redefined by Lee(1995). The opportunity potentials have been calculated for the educational, cultural, medical service, environmental sectors, income, and consumption sectors, and the spatial patterns of various opportunity potentials have been analyzed. The spatial patterns of opportunity potentials show the severe concentration on the Metropolitan Seoul area through all sectors. The next level concentration appears at the other end of the Keuyng-Bu axis. And the cities relatively high opportunity potential values are distributed along the Keuyng-Bu axis. Remain parts of the country show quietly low opportunity potential values. In particular, the southern-west and the northern-east parts show relatively very low values. This pattern appears for all sectors except for the opportunity potential of the environmental sector. It means that the spatial disparity in Korea have been promoted and enhanced by the national development policies concentrated the investment on the large cities along the Keuyng-Bu axis during the last 40 years.

This study was carried out to investigate residual characteristics of insecticide acetamiprid in asparagus under greenhouse condition from July to August and consequentially to obtain basic data for guideline on safe use of this pesticide in asparagus. Residues of acetamiprid in young stem of asparagus before and after removing foliage were analyzed from samples harvested at 0, 1, 3, 5 and 7 days after single application before harvest. As a result, residues of acetamiprid in young stem of asparagus before and after removing foliage at 0 day were 0.27 mg/kg and 0.14 mg/kg, respectively, which were higher than tentative limit (0.1 mg/kg). However, 3 days later residues of acetamiprid were lower than the tentative limit, representing 0.08 mg/kg and 0.03 mg/kg in the asparagus before and after removing foliage, respectively. Acetamiprid was undetectable in both samples at 5 days since the concentrations were less than detection limit (0.02 mg/kg) in this study. In summary, the half-life of acetamiprid in asparagus regardless of removing foliage was quite short under greenhouse condition from July to August, in the range of 1-3 days, and single application of acetamiprid water dispersible granule in/on asparagus at 7 days before harvest would have no problem on safety issues about pesticide residue. This result might be basic information to construct guideline for safe use of acetamiprid in asparagus.

Background: Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) became common in the treatment of spontaneous pneumothorax (SP). Therefor we've reviewed the recurrence rate after VATS and analysed the factors affecting recurrent pneumothorax after VATS on this study. Material and Method: This retrospective analysis was performed on 321 patients of SP who had undergone VATS from Jan. 2001 to Dec. 2008. The two groups were divided as follow: group A, non-recurrent group (298 patients: 93%); and group B, recurrent group (26 patients: 7%); the two groups were analysed retrospectively. Result: The average age of the study groups were $20.9{\pm}4.3$ years old in recurrent group vs. $25.9{\pm}11.7$ years old in non-recurrent group with statistical significance (p < 0.05). There were no statistical significance in male to female ratio, height/weight ratio, location of pneumothorax, smoking history, operative time, duration of drain, hospital stay, indication of opertion and incidence rate. Average length of duration in recurrence was 12.9 months. There was 22 (95.7%) recurrent patients after VATS within 4 year period among recurrent group. Treatment methods in 23 of recurrent patients were, 8 (VATS), 2 (Axillary thoracotomy) with 15% or more in amount of pneumothorax and 7 (7 Fr. chest tube), 6 (nasal 02) with 15% or less in amount of pneumothorax. Among 10 cases of reoperation, there were 3 cases of over looking type and 7 cases of new growing type. There was no additional recurrence after these procedures were given. Conclusion: There was higher recurrence rate in younger age after VATS thus for those under 20 yrs old, detailed and possible preoperative warning for recurrence is warranted. Most recurrence occured within 4 year period, thus for this reason, regular interval based follow up with chest x-ray study is suggested during this period.
