In the Sumeunmulbaengdui Wetland Protected Area of Jeju Island, there exists a unique pond, a so-called 'Ohmi', which is likely to be an oasis supporting the wildlife and escaped-livestock. We exquisitely described the diversity and distribution of plant community of the Ohmi. Despite its small area, six syntaxa were identified: Sphagnum community of peat bog type, Nymphoides coreana community of the floating-leaf limnetic vegetation, Scirpus triangulatus community and Schoenoplectus hotarui community of the littoral zone vegetation, and Deinostema violacea-Eleocharis congesta community and Eriocaulon atrum-miquelianum community of the ephemeral vegetation. A zonal distribution of plant communities along the water depth was recognized. The Sphagnum islets regarded as a typical component of peat bog, in Korea were first described at the center of the Ohmi. We conclude that the Ohmi is a primeval keystone habitat of the Sumeunmulbaengdui intermediate moor with a less oligotrophic ombrotrophic environment.
In this study, both habitat use analysis by rumen contents of Eurasian river otter (Lutra lutra) were carried out to investigate the preference of habitat environment and diet using their fecal samples. As the target sites, two streams (the Naechon-cheon and the Koonup-cheon) were selected in the upstream of the Hongcheon river, Hongcheon County, Gangwon Province. A total of 478 track samples (e.g., feces, scent and footprint) were found during the survey periods (May to November, 2009 and November, 2010). The dominant points, where the tracks of river otters were observed, were areas with the low depth(0.5-1m) and the slow flow velocity (5m/sec). Also, both rocks and rock-beds were preferred but artificial facilities were avoided. This ecological study of river otters using habitat use analysis and diet analysis by rumen contents will be useful fundamental information to conserve the river otter populations, and to protect their habitats.
A new species, Fimbristylis jindoensis J. Kim & M. Kim, is herein named and described. It is found on wet lowland mountain slopes in Jindo-gun, Jeollanam-do, Korea. Fimbristylis jindoensis shares several characteristics (long-creeping rhizomes, oblong spikelets, brown scales, and three-sided achenes) with the related species F. pierotii Miq. It is, however, distinct from F. pierotii, which has terete culms with five to six furrows that are 9-48 cm tall, flowers in June to July, a dry grassland habitat, fewer than ten spikelets, and simple anthela inflorescences. In contrast, the new species has shallow furrowed oval culms which are 57-93 cm tall, flowers in July to August, a wet mountain habitat, more than twenty spikelets, and compound anthela inflorescences.
The objective of this study is to analyze the characteristics of flow and bed change at the wide, shallow confluence of the Geum river and Mihocheon, which has different bed slope, height, and sediment concentration condition between the main channel and tributary. RMA-2 and SED2D were used to simulate flow and bed changes at the site. Flow simulations showed that the overall flow velocity, shear layer and vortex generated at the left bank of the confluence increase as the discharge was increased. Sediment transport simulations indicated that because of the high inflow sediment concentration from Mihocheon, sediment concentration in the main river increases after the confluence, the high sediment concentration band was kept along the shear layer boundary and the left bed was aggraded after confluence.

Mitrula paludosa (Geoglossaccae, Helotiales, Ascomycetes) is reported about morphological and ecological characteristics for the first time in Korea. The mushroom fruited on rotten pine leaves or fine twigs in ditches with flowing or standing water in Sogri Mountain National Park from May to June. The apothecium of M. paludosa is 20 to 50 mm tall. The cap is bright yellow to orange, cylindrical to wrinkled ovoid and $5{\sim}10\;{\times}\;10{\sim}20$ mm. The stem is whitish and cylindrical distinctly set off from the cap. The ascospore is hyaline, smooth long elliptical fusoid with round ends and $13{\sim}17\;{\times}\;1.5{\sim}2.0{\mu}m$. The ascus is unitunicate, $90{\sim}110\;{\times}\;5{\sim}6{\mu}m$, and has eight spores biseriately lined to the inoperculate apex. Paraphyses are septate filiform, $95{\sim}120\;{\times}\;1.0{\sim}1.5{\mu}m$, $7{\sim}10{\mu}m$ longer than the asci.
To present a guideline on the construction and management of artificial wetlands for high biomass production, three emergent macrophytes (Phragmites australis, PA; Typha angustifolia, TA; and Zizania latifolia, ZL) were planted under two substrates conditions (general soil with and without moss peat) and two water levels (5 cm and 20 cm) and monitored for three years. ZL showed greater growth performance rather than the others not only at early growth phase in the first year [shoot height, 200 cm; above-ground dry weight (AGDW), 500 $g/m^2$] but also in the last year (ZL, 1,100 $g/m^2$; TA, 770 $g/m^2$; and PA, 450 $g/m^2$ of AGDW). ZL with rapid growth at the early growth phase was not affected by naturally introduced weeds, whereas slower and poorer growth of PA and TA at the early growth phase resulted in relatively higher introduction and establishment of natural weeds. In turn, such introduced weeds negatively contributed to the growth of PA and TA particularly under shallow water (5 cm) with the substrate condition including moss peat. We suggest a plant material with rapid and great growth at the early phase such as ZL for reducing possible negative influences by the natural weeds and wild animals for high biomass production in constructed wetlands. A pre-growing process in greenhouse prior to planting might be an useful option to raise the competitiveness of those species when planting PA and/or TA. In addition, we recommend that integrated weed management system with utilizing various options at the most appropriate timing must be applied for maintaining sustainable high biomass production at the artificial wetlands.
The Oriental white stork (Ciconia boyciana) is an endangered species in Korea as well as in the world. In order to provide information on foraging habitats for releasing storks to the wild, we studied the foraging behavior of the species according to different food densities and water levels. We released two individuals, male and female, after enclosing a study site with a fence and cutting out a part of two or three primary feathers. Research was conducted from 20 June to 16 August 2008 at Whawon-ri, Mewon-myung, Chungcheongbuk-do, South Korea. We investigated habitat patch usage, foraging efficiency, and foraging methods of the feeding individuals in the different food densities and water levels. The storks invested more for foraging time and trials, and they captured more food in a habitat of high food density than others. The female invested more time and captured food most in a habitat of lowest water depth while the male in a habitat of middle water depth. However, foraging efficiency did not differ significantly among habitats of food density and water depth, and only differed between male and female by ways of foraging method. From this study we suggest that the storks select foraging habitats and foraging methods under different conditions of food density and water depth.

A study on changes on the distribution of vascular hydrophytes and the growth pattern of Schenoplectus triqueter (Scirpus triqueter) was undertaken at the Nakdong River estuary from 2002 to 2004. The change was due to physical alteration of the estuary for the past 25 years. These plant species are the major food sources for winter waterfowl. A total of 32 species of vascular hydrophytes from 17 families were found in the West Nakdong River (freshwater), the main channel of Nakdong River (freshwater) and the Nakdong River Estuary (brackish water). After the construction of the barrage on the estuary in 1987, the number of hydrophytes has remarkably increased to 17 species (5 species in 1985) in the main channel of the River. In particular, a community of Eurale ferox was found at the backwater wetland of the Daejeo side of the main channel. The introduced species of Eichhornia crassipes and Pistia stratiotes that were epidemic in 2001 at West Nakdong River was not found any more. The other species such as Nymphoides indica, Myriophyllum spicatum, Ruppia spp. were rediscovered. The large area (about 1,300ha) of Zostera spp. was the main sources of food for swans, but disappeared because of direct and indirect impacts of reclamation in the River estuary. Currently, there remains a small patch of Zostera spp. and about 250ha of S. triqueter. Schenoplectus triqueter grew mostly between April-September and tuber formed, between September-October. The growth of S. triqueter up to $60\sim80cm$ in length was observed in 5 sites out of the 7 sites in brackish area. Tubers of S. triqueter were eaten by waterfowls such as swans as winter food. In five sites, tubers took $44\sim57%$ of total biomass in October. Tubers were found in deep layers; $5\sim15cm$ (9%), $15\sim25cm$ (28%), $25\sim40cm$ (55%), below 40cm $(6\sim7%)$. The distribution of vascular hydrophytes has remarkably changed in the Nakdong River Estuary due to the reclamation of the area. In order to determine the extent of changes of the distribution of these plants and the carrying capacity of the area for waterfowl, an intensive research is urgently needed.
