  • Nowadays, some studies are performed in order to introduce the Limit State Design method widely used in foreign work sites. LRFD (Load Resistance Factor Design) method is widely used in the fields in which the data accumulation is possible - such as deep foundations, and shallow foundations, etc. The limit state design in the retaining walls is insufficient in the country owing to difficulties applying load tests. The limit state design method for retaining wall structures are studied based upon the National Retaining wall Design Standard legislated in 2008 by Ministry of Land, Transport, and Maritime Affairs. In this paper several retaining walls were calculated according to LRFD design criteria analysis using the general program with limit state design method and the factor of safety for sliding and overturning. Comparing with their results, the Taylor's series simple reliability analysis was performed. In the analysis results of retaining wall section, safety factors calculated by LRFD were found to be lowered than those calculated in current WSD, and it is possibly judged to be economic design by changing wall dimensions. In the future, pre-assessment of the geotechnical data for ensuring the reliability and the studies including reinforced retaining walls with ground anchor are needed.

  • Micro-piles have been used to increase the bearing capacity or to restrain settlement of existing shallow foundation. Recently, micro-piles are used to support the shallow foundation, to stabilize the slope and to resist the sliding of retaining wall. Using the micro-piles in geotechnical engineering, some investigators have studied the effective installing method by model test or field test. But most of previous studies are chiefly focused on the micro-piles in sand or clay layer. If a rock layer exists in soil, the installing length of micro-piles may be determined by the depth of rock layer. In this case, the stiffness of pile may be changed by the installing length of pile, and so the installing method has to be altered by the changed stiffness of pile. Model tests have been conducted to study the installation method of micro-pile in soil with rock layer. As a result, when the ratio of length of pile is below 50 ($L/d{\leq}50$), installing of micro-piles in vertical position is effective regardless of the depth of rock layer. If the depth of rock layer is deeper than soil failure zone and the ratio of the length of pile exceeds 50 (L/d>50), installing of the micro-piles in sloped position is effective.

  • The hollow modular concrete block reinforced foundation method is one of the ground reinforcement foundation methods that uses hexagonal honeycomb-shaped concrete blocks with mixed crushed rock to reinforce soft grounds. It then forms an artificial layered ground that increases bearing capacity and reduces settlement. The hollow modular honeycomb-shaped concrete block is a geometrically economical, stable structure that distributes forces in a balanced way. However, the behavioral characteristics of hollow modular concrete block reinforced foundations are not yet fully understood. In this study, a bearing capacity test is performed to analyze the reinforcement effectiveness of the hollow modular concrete block through the laboratory model tests. From the load-settlement curve, punching shear failure occurs under the unfilled sand condition (A-1-N). However, the filled sand condition (A-1-F) shows a linear curve without yielding, confirming the reinforcement effect is three times higher than that of unreinforced ground. The bearing capacity equation is proposed for the parts that have contact pressure under concrete, vertical stress of hollow blocks, and the inner skin friction force from horizontal stress by confining effect based on the schematic diagram of confining effect inside a hollow modular concrete block. As a result of calculating the bearing capacity, the percentage of load distribution for contact force on the area of concrete is about 65%, vertical force on the area of hollow is 16.5% and inner skin friction force of area of the inner wall is about 18.5%. When the surcharge load is applied to the concrete part, the vertical stress occurs on the area of the hollow part by confining effect first. Then, in the filled sand in the hollow where the horizontal direction is constrained, the inner skin friction force occurs by the horizontal stress on the inner wall of the hollow modular concrete block. The inner skin friction force suppresses the punching of the concrete part and reduces contact pressure.

  • Late Cretaceous to early Tertiary volcanic rocks in the Kyongsang basin exhibit high-K calc-alkaline characteristics, and originated from the magmatism related genetically to subduction of Kula-Pacific plate. They represent HFSE depletion and LlLE enrichment characteristics as shown by magmas related to subduction. Early studies on the depth of magma generation has been estimated as 180-230 km based on K-h relation should be reevaluated, because the depth of peridotite partial melting with 0.4 wt. % water is 80-120 km at subduction zone, and subducting slab in premature arc can melted even lower than 70 km. Moreover the increase of potassium contents depends on either contamination of crustal material and fluids of subducting slab or low degree of partial melting. If the inclination of subduction zone is 30 degrees and the depth to the Benioff zone is 180-230 km, the calculated distance between the volcanic zone and trench axis would be 310-400 km. It is unlikely because the distance between the Kyongsang basin and trench during late Cretaceous to early Tertiary is closer than this value and not comparable with generally-accepted models in subduction zone magmatism. $K_{55}$ of the volcanics in the Kyongsang basin is 0.3-2.3 wt.% and the average indicate that the depth ranges between 80-170 km on the diagram of Marsh, Carmichael (1974). Fractionation from garnet lherzolite, assumed the depth of 180-230km, is not consistent with the REE patterns of the volcanoes in the Kyongsang basin. Futhermore, the range of depth suggested by many workers, who studied magmatism related to subduction, imply shallower than this depth. Crustal thickness calculated by the content of CaO and $Na_2O$ is about 30 km and about 35 km, respectively. Paleo-crustal thickness during late Cretaceous to early Tertiary times in the Kyongsang basin inferred about 30 km calculated by La/Sm versus LaJYb data, which is also supported by many previous studies.

  • This study was conducted to prepare efficient and systematic measures for nature conservation and management in Beomseom Islet, and to provide for basic data to investigate the process of vegetation change in the future. The vegetation of Beomseom Islet was classified to six vegetation type; i.e., Miscanthus sinensis community, Pinus thunbergii community, Iythophyte vegetation, evergreen broad leaf community, shrub community, and Pseudosasa japonica community. The size of each vegetation type was 40,230 $m^2$ ($23.3\%$) for shrub community, 39,366 $m^2$($22.8\%$) for Iythophyte vegetation, 30,012 $m^2$ ($17.4\%$) fur Pinus thunbergii community, 29,853 $m^2$ ($17.3\%$) for Miscanthus sinensis community, 5,564 $m^2$ ($3.2\%$) for evergreen broad leaf community, and 3,325 $m^2$ ($1.9\%$) for Pseudosasa japonica community. The area of non-vegetated sea cliff Bone that composed of bare rocks is 24,246 $m^2$($14.1\%$). We estimated that these distribution patterns of vegetation were the result of various environmental factors such as the steepness of slope and shallowness of soil as well as the cultivation of exotic plants causing disruption of native vegetation.

  • Not only in order to determine reasonable application amounts of PCP in terms of soil texture, but also to get basic data for fish-toxicity-free treatment by estimating fish toxicity, some aspects of PCP adsorption were observed taking various paddy soils with different physico-chemical characteristics in the Choongbook Area as samples. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. There was a positive correlation between PCP adsorption and clay contents, total nitrogen, organic matter, cation exchange capacity, exchangeable bases, and phosphorus absorption coefficients, respectively; whereas there was a negative one between PCP adsorption and pH. Although they were not significant, it was remarkable that there was a relatively large amount of correlation between PCP adsorption and clay contents, $H^+,\;Mg^{++}$, and CEC, respectively. 2. PCP adsorption in terms of soil texture was in the order of Clay>Loam>Sandy loam. 3. Although PCP adsorption in the $H_2O_2-treated$ soils decreased remarkably, it was not proportional to the humus contents. 4. The order of PCP adsorption in the exchangeable base-treated soils was H^+-exchanged soil>$K^+-soil$>$Na^+-soil$>$Ca^{++}-soil$>Mg^{++}-soil. 5. Langmuir's and Freundlich's adsorption isotherms were applicable to the PCP adsorption, and thereby were able to be calculated maximum adsortion amounts of PCP, bond energy, and the depths of adsorption layers. 6. Maximum adsorbed amounts of PCP were 212.14 mg/100gr in Clayey loam, 97.28 to 121.59mg/100gr in Loam, and 32.92 to 91.74mg/100gr in Sandy loam, respectively. 7. The depths of mixed layers of limiting application for fish-toxicity-free treatment were 0.88cm of the Jinchun soil, the shallowest and 4.29 cm of the Naesan-ri Sandy loam, the deepest.

  • In order to understand temperature and salinity variations, and the characteristics of the seawater exchange through two channels of Gamak Bay, we conducted measurements of water temperature, salinity and current for fifteen days in the summer and winter. Based on the observational data, the current seemed to have a close relation with wind. In addition, a correlation analysis result proved that water temperature is likely to be more influenced by air temperature rather than tide. Moreover, water temperatures at the south channel varied more sensitively with the season rather than at the east channel because of its shallow depth. Seawater exchange rates were estimated to be 0.5~29.9% (mean: 11.6%) at the east channel but 1.3~62.6% (mean: 18.6%) at the south channel in summer. On the contrary, they were estimated to be 0.3~28.5% (mean: 8.9%) at the east channel but 0.1~97.9% (mean: 31.2%) at the south channel in winter. Thus, the rates of seawater exchange in Gamak Bay turned out that the south mouth is approximately three times higher than the east mouth, and it also suggested that seasonal winds affect the rates of seawater exchange in Gamak Bay.

  • The objective of this study is to offer a basic information to select the plant species for environmentally friendly forest road by quantifying the pull-out strength by 18 species used for a revegetation of forest road slope. In the investigation of the root depth growth during 17 months, Indigobush amorpha showed maximum depth of 34.0 cm and perennial ryegrass showed minimum depth of 17.7 cm among all species. The pull-out strength by herb species was $0.054ton/m^2/plant$ for exotic species, $0.085ton/m^2/plant$ for indigenous species, and by shrub species was $0.049ton/m^2/plant$. There were no large difference among herb species in pull-out strength, but shrub species were approximately 9 times stronger than herb species. Thus, for maximizing tightening effect and use of inner soil space. The mixed seeding using herb for erosion control and shrub for shallow failure protection would make up optimal revegetation of forest road slope.

  • The Oriental white stork (Ciconia boyciana) is an endangered species in Korea as well as in the world. In order to provide information on foraging habitats for releasing storks to the wild, we studied the foraging behavior of the species according to different food densities and water levels. We released two individuals, male and female, after enclosing a study site with a fence and cutting out a part of two or three primary feathers. Research was conducted from 20 June to 16 August 2008 at Whawon-ri, Mewon-myung, Chungcheongbuk-do, South Korea. We investigated habitat patch usage, foraging efficiency, and foraging methods of the feeding individuals in the different food densities and water levels. The storks invested more for foraging time and trials, and they captured more food in a habitat of high food density than others. The female invested more time and captured food most in a habitat of lowest water depth while the male in a habitat of middle water depth. However, foraging efficiency did not differ significantly among habitats of food density and water depth, and only differed between male and female by ways of foraging method. From this study we suggest that the storks select foraging habitats and foraging methods under different conditions of food density and water depth.
