  • Most of receiving rooms for the measurement of floor impact sound have rectangular shapes with couple of meters of dimension, with reflective finishing, no furniture, no curtains. Modal overlaps in those condition are the major reason for the low reproducibility, and as a matter of course, the low credibility. It is the major purpose of this study that searching for a better measurement method which mitigate the effect of modal overlap on measurement. Two ways of methods are tested. One is the way described in ISO standards which enables controlling the room modes of receiving rooms, the other is the way which enables to get more precise spatial averages in receiving rooms with room modes. It is not easy maintaining the reverberation time of low frequency bands in the range between 1s and 2s, though it is proven to be effective controlling the room modes with base traps. Space-time average SPL's through combinations of rotating microphones are easy to measure, and have good consistencies with average SPL of entire receiving room.

  • Electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) or vaping product use-associated lung injury (EVALI) has emerged as a social issue as e-cigarette use is rapidly increasing worldwide and is related to many deaths in the United States. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of EVALI in South Korea of a 24-year-old man with acute respiratory symptoms and a history of e-cigarette use. Chest CT revealed diffuse bilateral ground-glass opacities with subpleural sparing, airspace consolidation, and centrilobular micronodules as typical patterns of EVALI with organizing pneumonia and diffuse alveolar damage. Infection was excluded with meticulous laboratory examinations, and the patients' illnesses were not attributed to other causes. EVALI was diagnosed by meeting the diagnostic criteria with consistent clinico-radiologic findings through a multidisciplinary approach. Radiologists should have good knowledge of EVALI radiologic findings and play a cardinal role in the proper diagnosis and management of EVALI.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary metabolizable energy and crude protein levels on the performance and abdominal fat pad of broiler chicks. A total of 702, a day-old chicks were alloted into nine groups differing in dietary metabolizable energy (2,800, 3,000 and 3, 200kcal/kg) and crude protein(16, 18 and 20%) level from July 10 to September 4, 1990 for 8 weeks. The results obtained were summarized as follows. 1. Body weight gain was significantly increased by increasing of metabolizable energy level (p<0.05), but there was no significant difference between 2,800kcal/kg and 3,000kcal/kg, or 3,000 kcal/kg and 3,200kcal/kg of metabolizable energy, and there was no significant difference among crude protein levels. 2. Feed consumption tended to decrease by increasing of metabolizable energy and crude protein levels, but there was no significant difference among treatments. 3. Feed conversion was significantly improved by increasing of metabolizable energy level (p<0.01), and it was showed a tendency to improve by increasing crude protein level(p<0.05), but the difference between 18% and 20% of crude protein level was not significant. 4. Eviscerated yield was not different significantly among treatments. 5. Abdominal fat pad was significantly increased by increasing of metabolizable energy level (p<0.01), but there was no significant difference between 2,800kcal/kg and 3,000kcal/kg, or 3,000kcal/kg and 3,200kcal/kg of metabolizable energy. On the other hand, abdominal fat pad in 20% of crude protein level was significantly lower than those in 16% and 18% of crude protein level (p<0.01). 6. The feed cost per kilogram body weight gain tended to decrease by increasing of metabolizable energy level, and that in 18% of crude protein level was slightly lower than those in 16% and 20% of crude protein level, but there was no significant difference among treatments.

  • Brassica juncea (2n = 4x = 36, AABB genome, 1,068 Mb) is a U's triangle species and an amphidiploid derivative of B. rapa and B. nigra. Fifteen varieties were used to study the ITS (internal transcribed spacer) regions of ribosomal DNA and MITEs (miniature inverted-repeat transposable elements) with a view of developing specific molecular markers. ITSs and MITEs are an excellent resource for developing DNA markers for genomics and evolutionary studies because most of them are stably inherited and present in high copy numbers. The ITS (ITS1 and ITS2) sequence was compared with the consensus sequence of B. rapa and B. nigra. Variation in ITS1 created two separate groups among 15 varieties, with 10 varieties in one group and 5 in the other. Phylogenetic analysis revealed two major clusters for those 10 and 5 varieties. Among the 160 different MITE primers used to evaluate the selected 15 varieties of B. juncea, 70 were related to the Stowaway, 79 to the Tourist, 6 to the hAT, and 5 to the Mutator super-families of MITEs. Of 160 markers examined, 32 were found to be polymorphic when fifteen different varieties of B. juncea were evaluated. The variety 'Blackgat' was different from the other mustard varieties with respect to both phenotype and genotype. The diversity of 47 additional accessions could be verified using eight selected molecular markers derived from MITE family sequences. The polymorphic markers identified in this study can be used for varietal classification, variety protection, and other breeding purposes.

  • The discharge of waste nutrient solution from greenhouse to natural ecosystem leads to the accumulation of excess nutrients that results in contamination or eutrophication. There is a need to recycle the waste nutrient solution in order to prevent the environmental hazards. The amount and kind of nutrients in waste nutrient solution might be enough to grow photosynthetic microorganisms. Hence in the present study, we examined the growth and mass cultivation of cyanobacteria in the waste nutrient solution with an objective of removing N and P and concomitantly, its mass cultivation. Four photosynthetic filamentous cyanobacteria (Anabaena HA101, HA701 and Nostoc HN601, HN701) isolated from composts and soils of the Chungnam province were used as culture strains. Among the isolates, Nostoc HN601 performed faster growth rate and higher N and P uptake in the BG-II ($NO_3{^-}$) medium when compared to those of other cyanobacterial strains. Finally, the selected isolate was tested under optimum conditions (airflow at the rate of $1L\;min^{-1}$. in 15 L reactor, initial pH 8) in waste nutrient solution from tomato hydroponic in green house condition. Results showed to remove 100% phosphate from the waste nutrient solution in the tomato hydroponics recorded over a period of 7 days. The growth rate of Nostoc HN601 was $16mg\;Chl-a\;L^{-1}$ in the waste nutrient solution from tomato hydroponics with optimum condition, whereas growth rate of Nostoc HN601 was only $9.8mg\;Chl-a\;L^{-1}$ in BG-11 media. Nitrogen fixing capacity of Nostoc HN601 was $20.9nmol\;C_2H_4\;mg^{-1}\;Chl-a\;h^{-1}$ in N-free BG-11. The total nitrogen and total phosphate concentration of Nostoc HN601 were 63.3 mg N gram dry weight $(GDW)^{-1}$ and $19.1mg\;P\;GDW^{-1}$ respectively. Collectively, cyanobacterial mass production using waste nutrient solution under green house condition might be suitable for recycling and cleaning of waste nutrient solution from hydroponic culture system. Biomass of cyanobacteria, cultivated in waste nutrient solution, could be used as biofertilizer.

  • This study was divided into experiment I(129g egg-albumen plus 150g sucrose) and experiment II(161g egg-albumen plus 150g sucrose) which were subdivided into groups treated with 0, 8.71, 17.43 and 26.149 egg yolk. These experiments were incubated in a shaking water bath(5$0^{\circ}C$) with a speed of 92(turnaround) per minute for a period of times. The pH and specific gravity were measured after 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 hour incubations. The results obtained were as follows: 1. The pH and specific gravity were steadily increased by shaking time, but variably was influenced by the amount of egg yolk and egg-albumen. 2. In the groups treated with egg-albumen, egg yolk, and sucrose of experiments I and II, pH was increased by the amount of egg-albumen in conjunction with shaking time, but specific gravity was decreased. 3. Ten hours after shaking maximum pH 8.60 was shown in the groups treated with 161g egg-albumen : however, in :he groups treated with 129g egg-albumen the maximum pH 8.39 was shown 12 hours after shaking. The different time exhibited maximum pH resulted from the amount of egg-albumen used. 4. The pH specific gravity were higher in the ,groups treated without egg yolk than in the groups with egg yolk. 5. In the experiment I which was added four levels of egg yolk to 1509 of sucrose and 129g of egg albumen, specific gravity(Table 2) had a high (r=0.9692$^{* *}$) correlation with pH (Table 1) and the regression equation between specific gravity and pH (X) was Y=0.050+0.145x. 6. In the experiment II which was added four levels of egg yolk to 150g of sucrose and 161g of egg albumen, specific gravity(Table 4) had a high (r=0.8963$^{* *}$) correlation with pH (Table 3) and the regression equation between specific gravity and pH (X) was Y=0.294+0.110X.10X.

  • The imports of Centella asiatica L. Urban are increasing year-by-year due to the fact that its extract is a raw material used for skin wounds and in cosmetics. However, studies on the cultivation and identification of native C. asiatica species in Korea have been extremely rare. Therefore, this study was conducted in order to investigate the physiological and functional activity of Korean native C. asiatica plant cultivated in Hapcheon, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea. As a result, the highest antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities were examined with methanol extract while skin-whitening and wrinkle improvement were examined with water extract. Seven bacterium and one fungus were treated with 50% methanol extracts of C. asiatica and most of the bacterium showed similar or low levels of antibacterial activity compared to the control group of Omiza (Schisandra chinensis) extract, except for Streptococcus pyogenes, which showed higher antimicrobial activity than that of Omiza extract. However, neither C. asiatica and Omiza extracts showed antimicrobial activity against the fungus, C. albicans. The results of anti-inflammatory effect analyses with Raw 264.7 cells confirmed that the treatment of methanol extract reduced the level of NO by 50% or more compared to the control group. In addition, the water extract showed the highest reduction of melanin content of up to 20% more than the control group when examined with B16F10 cell line, indicating a significant skin-whitening effect. Furthermore, we were able to show the significant skin wrinkle improvement caused by C. asiatica extract with NHDF cell as an indicator, but strong cytotoxicity was also observed, suggesting that further studies are necessary.

  • Background: It has been well documented that transient occlusion of the coronary artery causes myocardial ischemia and finally cell death when ischemia is sustained for more than 20 minutes. Extensive studies have revealed that ischemic myocardium cannot recover without reperfusion by adequate restoration of blood flow, however, reperfusion can cause long-lasting cardiac dysfunction and aggravation of structural damage. The author therefore attempted to examine the effect of postischemic reperfusion on myocardial ultrastructure and to determine the rationales for recanalization therapy to salvage ischemic myocardium. Materials and methods: Young Holstein-Friesian cows(130∼140 Kg body weight; n=40) of both sexes, maintained with nutritionally balanced diet and under constant conditions, were used. The left anterior descending coronary artery(LAD) was occluded by ligation with 4-0 silk snare for 20 minutes and recanalized by release of the ligation under continuous intravenous drip anesthesia with sodium pentobarbital(0.15 mg/Kg/min). Drill biopsies of the risk area (antero-lateral wall) were performed at just on reperfusion(5 minutes), 1-, 2-, 3-, 6-, 12-hours after recanalization, and at 1-hour assist(only with mechanical respiration and fluid replacement) after 12-hour recanalization. The materials were subdivided into subepicardial and subendocardial tissues. Tissue samples were examined with a transmission electron microscope (Philips EM 300) at the accelerating voltage of 60 KeV. Results: After a 20-minute ligation of the LAD, myocytes showed slight to moderate degree of ultrastructural changes including subsarcolemmal bleb formation, loss of nuclear matrix, clumping of chromatin and margination, mitochondrial destruction, and contracture of sarcomeres. However, microvascular structures were relatively well preserved. After 1-hour reperfusion, nuclear and mitochondrial matrices reappeared and intravascular plugging by polymorphonuclear leukocytes or platelets was observed. However, nucleoli and intramitochondrial granules reappeared within 3 hours of reperfusion and a large number of myocytes were recovered progressively within 6 hours of reperfusion. Recovery was apparent in the subepicardial myocytes and there were no distinct changes in the ultrastructure except narrowed lumen of the microvessels in the later period of reperfusion. Conclusions: It is likely that the ischemic myocardium could not be salvaged without adequate restoration of coronary flow and that the microvasculature is more resistant to reversible period of ischemia than subendocardium and subepicardium. Therefore, thrombolysis and/or angioplasty may be a rational method of therapy for coronarogenic myocardial ischemia. However, it may take a relatively longer period of time to recover from ischemic insult and reperfusion injury should be considered.
