  • Background: Various Schisandra chinensis (SC) varieties grow in diverse regions in Korea. However, there is no valid scientific evidence of these varieties. This study aimed to select the excellent resources in terms of the growth characteristics, antioxidant activities, and analysis of the active compounds of the SC collection. Method and Results: In total, 154 resources of SC were collected from various regions of Korea. The growth characteristics were measured by the number of fruit bunches, fruit number, and weight of 100 fruits. The antioxidant activities were investigated by analyzing the total flavonoid and total polyphenol contents and the radical scavenging activity of DPPH and ABTS. Schizandrin A, schizandrin c, gomisin a, and gomisin N were analyzed by HPLC. Each resource showed different growth characteristics. Among the antioxidative effects, the highest 20 resources showed high antioxidant activities in selected 29 resources. Analysis of the SC lignan index showed that all resources contained more than 1.16% of active compounds. Conclusions: All of the selected 29 SC resources were shown to have excellent growth characteristics, antioxidant activities, and bioactive compound richness. Especially, SC-004, SC-007, and SC-154 showed the best growth characteristics, and SC-22, SC-40, and SC-45 showed the best antioxidant activities and bioactive compound richness.

  • Background: Angelica acutiloba Kitagawa belongs to the flowering plant family Apiaceae. Its young leaves are consumed as a vegetable, and its roots have medicinal properties. This study was conducted to analyze the seed germination characteristics of A. acutiloba according to its ripening stages. Methods and Results: The seeds were harvested from a research farm managed by the Department of Herbal Crop Research, Rural Development Administration in 2018 and were divided into six groups according to their specific gravities. In particular, we studied the effect of harvesting periods and umbel orders on seed characteristics. The results showed that the rates of germination, emergence, and early growth improved as the specific gravity of the seeds increased. In addition, the germination rates of the seeds harvested in mid July and early August were significantly higher than those harvested in the other seasons, and the seeds obtained from the first floret had the greatest mass and weight. Conclusions: In this study, we demonstrated that it is possible to improve the germination rate by appropriate selection of seeds and harvesting period both of which are closely related to seed maturity.

  • Increasing concern for the health, well-being, and income of the people has expectedly brought continuous increase in the industrial value of medicinal plants in recent years as these are also used in foods and cosmetics. However, Korea's increased import of these products from China due to the FTA contract causes negative effects on its industrial value. In this regard, various measures for medicinal crop seed development and production, organization and expansion of circulation and forest land use deregulation are needed to promote the agricultural food industry including medicinal plants. As a measure, first, a database of medicinal plants should be built that can help to promote the national medicinal industry and the seed management system. Second, agricultural productivity should be enhanced via the development and supply of varieties of high quality medicinal plants. Third, there should be a good practice of the system maintenance for the production and supply of medicinal crop seeds. Fourth, production and distribution system of medicinal plants should be established by standardization of high quality seeds. Nowadays, the consumption pattern of medicinal crops is changing from direct ingestion to cosmetics, drugs, and food and this is expected to increase continuously. Consequently, the increased production of medicinal crops will support the development policy and the institutional improvement in response to this trend of the positive change of industrialization.

  • To analyse the management and production of medicinal crops in Uisong region, cultural conditions and standard income of 147 farms were investigated. Location quotient of medicinal crops cultivated was high as following order ; Paeonia lactiflora > Cornus ofidnalis> Bupleurm falcatum > Anemarhena asphodeloides > Rehmannia glutinosa > Eucommia ulmoides > Paeonia suffruticosa > Angelica dahurica. The average cultivated area per farm was 1.92ha : 1.35ha of upland field, 0.56ha of paddy field. Distribution of agricultural land in each farm was average 10.2 fields in 3.1 locations. Ratio of labor input in the medicinal plant sector was 31.1 %. The number of medicinal crops cultivated was 36 species among 147 farms and 2.4 species per farm. Among the cultivated medicinal plant, peony (Paeonia lactiflora) was the most popular medicinal plant, which was cultivated in 30.72ha of 85 farms. Income from medicinal plants was high in order of Carthamus tinctorius, Polygonatum stenophyllum, Angelica genuilexa. Medicinal crops should be selected based on farm condition, risk level and price settlement in order to maximize productivity and income.
