  • The purpose of this study is to develop a methodology to select a cluster of night traffic accidents using CRP (Continuous Risk Profile) analysis. the other purpose of this study is to present the characteristics of the traffic accident cluster section selected at night using CRP analysis. The CRP analysis was performed considering traffic volume of target routes through traffic accident data. In addition, variables were set according to the freeway sections. the method of subtracting the daytime CRP from the nighttime CRP was used to analyze the nighttime traffic accident. As a result, Using the CRP analysis, the sections of hotspot were identified and plotted based on traffic accidents. Also, the sections where traffic accidents are frequent were those where IC or Tunnels were installed, and there was a deviation from the general section. In conclusion, CRP analysis could be used to calculate the frequent section of specialized traffic accidents at night, and it was selected as a point in need of improvement due to the frequent occurrence of specialized traffic accidents at night in the section where IC or tunnel facilities are installed. In addition, it is inferred that the number of specialized traffic accidents at night in the section where IC or tunnel facilities are installed is a factor in the problem of night visibility due to lighting facilities.

  • This study was practiced in order to analyze the effect of concentrative lighting that is set up at night in some districts. For practicing this study, It was analyzed first, to study the past papers, second, to analyze the condition of the traffic accidents and the characteristics of the accidents, third, to study on the improvements of the high accident locations, finally to study the characteristics about the pedestrians' traffic accidents. The effects of road lighting improvements was analysed. The result of the analysis on concentrative lighting of crosswalk said that the night accidents was decreased to average 16.13% and the Net Present Value(NPV) on the analysis of the effect during using period is 25,648 million won, The B/C is 12.85. So, It was analysed that it is very effective. This study was practiced on the some districts and equipping time is different, and the number of samples is small. Because of this facts, This sample doesn't represent all of the concentrative lightings. But through the systematic analysis, this study can present the alternatives that can be materialized.

  • This Study deals with effect of low visibility condition at nighttime on traffic accident. Roads for experiment of this study are Gyeongbu expressway, Seohaean expressway, Yeongdong expressway and Seoul beltway in Gyeonggi province. For this study, I subdivided basic straight section of them into 58 short section. And I analyzed effect of low visibility condition by darkness at nighttime on traffic accident by using 410 traffic accidents between January 1, 2009 and June 30, 2012 on those sections. The Quasi-experimental and negative binomial regression were applied to analyze effect of low visibility condition at nighttime on traffic accident. In this study, I only analyzed visibility difference of daytime and nighttime on traffic accident except other effective variables on traffic accidents. As a result, I have found that it is for low visibility condition at nighttime to have effect on traffic accidents at such specific conditions as Los A speed is maintained in basic straight section of expressway in fine weather. And I tried to do various analysis on types and causes of traffic accidents using the result of analysis.

  • Driver's capability of identifying the change in freeway alignments and environments is one of important factors associated with traffic safety on freeways. In particular, driver's visibility and recognition capability are highly dependent on the altitude of the sun by sunset, sunrise, and nighttime. The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of geometric conditions affecting crash occurrences at sunset, sunrise, and nighttime. Poisson and negative binomial regressions were adopted to predict freeway crash frequency in this study. Freeway crash data during 2007~2010 were used for developing the crash frequency models. A set of variables representing the characteristics of geometric conditions were identified as significant ones affecting crash occurrences. The results of this study would be useful in deriving effective countermeasures for preventing traffic crashes that mainly occur at sunset, sunrise, and nighttime on freeways.

  • The objective of this study was to analyze the effects of LED safety block using the government database. To evaluate these effects, the night accident data was obtained from 2007 to 2011 from the database. At the LED-installed area, compared to the uninstalled area, the number of night traffic accidents, injured and mortality had decreased by 26.2%, 21.2% and 38.3%, respectively. The LED-installed intersections are safer than the LED-uninstalled roads from a traffic accidents perspective. In conclusion, a LED safety block is quite effective in decreasing the number of traffic accidents. Although this study was conducted using the data from Changwon city, where LED safety blocks have been installed so far, these results can provide valuable data to other cities considering the implementation of these LED safety blocks.

  • Recently, the number of private cars has increased sharply due to the increase in national income. The sudden increase in the number of vehicles in limited territory has caused serious traffic congestion and the traffic congestion cost wasted on the road due to such traffic congestion is increasing every year. To solve this problem, we propose a traffic signal control system using image processing. In this paper, we use the camera installed at the intersection to measure the amount of traffic flowing in and out of each road simultaneously. We propose a traffic signal control system that can prevent traffic congestion before it happens. In the case of applying the traffic signal control system proposed in this paper to the daytime, the traffic volume could be measured accurately. However, the result of the experiment with the night-time general camera and the headlight with the infrared camera at the night-time of 72.8% was 86.6%.

  • As interest in traffic safety increases, research on autonomous driving, which reduces the incidence of traffic accidents, is increased. Object recognition and detection are essential for autonomous driving. Therefore, research on object recognition and detection through traffic image big data is being actively conducted to determine the road conditions. However, because most existing studies use only daytime data, it is difficult to recognize objects on night roads. Particularly, in the case of a light source object, it is difficult to use the features of the daytime as it is due to light smudging and whitening. Therefore, this study proposes Yolo based light source object detection for traffic image big data processing. The proposed method performs image processing by applying color model transitions to night traffic image. The object group is determined by extracting the characteristics of the object through image processing. It is possible to increase the recognition rate of light source object detection on a night road through a deep learning model using candidate group data.

  • The death rate of pedestrian in car accidents in Korea is 2.5 times higher than the average of OECD countries'. If a system that can detect pedestrians and send alarm to drivers is built and reduces the rate, it is worth developing such a pedestrian detection system (PDS). Since the accident rate in which pedestrians are involved is higher at nighttime than in daytime, the adoption of nighttime PDS is being standardized by big auto companies. However, they are usually using night visions or multiple sensors, which are usually expensive. In this paper we suggest a method for nighttime PDS using single wide dynamic range (WDR) monochrome camera in visible spectrum band. In our experiments, pedestrians were accurately detected if only most edges of pedestrians could be obtained.

  • The purpose of this study is to comparatively analyze the characteristics and models of traffic accidents by day and nighttime. In pursuing the above, this study gives particular attentions to testing the differences and developing the models (multiple linear and non-linear and Poisson and negative binomial regression) using the data of Cheongju 4-legged signalized intersections. The main results analyzed are as follows. First, the differences between day and nighttime accidents were defined. Second, 12 accident models which are all statistically significant were developed. Finally, the differences between day and nighttime models were comparatively analyzed using the common and specific variables.
