In the dielectric insulation design of any high temperature superconducting (HTS) apparatus as well as HTS fault current limiter in the electrical power systems, the breakdown characteristics of cryogenic coolants such as liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$) are an important factor of the insulating engineering. Previous reports concerned with the breakdown characteristics of liquid nitrogen have pointed out that bubbles and gaseous nitrogen have a treat influence on their breakdown phenomena, However, useful data for practical insulation design of HTS fault CUITent limiter operating at subcooled L$N_2$ have not been obtained enough. Therefore, this paper presents an experimental investigate of breakdown phenomena in liquid nitrogen under AC voltage, And, we observed the breakdown voltage (BDV) of liquid nitrogen with lowering temperature. The Weibull plots of the breakdown voltage of subcooled $LN_2$ for the needle-plane electrode with d= 10 mm are studied, The dependence of breakdown voltage for needle-plane and pancake coil-pancake coil electrode on temperature is illustrated, The relationship between the AC breakdown characteristics and the temperature were clarified.
In formulating the Transient State Theory of Significant Liquid Structure it is assumed that there exist holes of molecular size in liquids and that the liquid state is partitioned in three states, namely, solid-like state, representing the molecules apart from holes; gas-like state, representing the molecules jumping into the holes; and the transient state, representing the molecules in a possible state of jumping into the holes by aquiring the strain energy due to the holes. It is found that the partition function derived according to the proposed theory can be applied to the liquids of argon, nitrogen, benzene, chloroform, and carbon disulfide with good accuracy.

The spray characteristics according to the recess length of the GCSC injector and the change of momentum flux ratio(MFR) of the gas and the liquid have been examined through high pressure cold flow test using a high pressure chamber. The liquid in this experiment was water, and the gas was nitrogen. The spray images were taken by a back-lit strobe imaging technique. Results showed that the spray was a wide hollow cone at the lower MFR(liquid velocity was fixed) and the spray became a narrow solid cone as the MFR was increased. And the injector with short recess length produced a narrow solid cone at the higher MFR.

In the present experimental study, the effect of gas- and liquid-injected methods on the formation of bubble and liquid slug at the merging micro T-junction of a square microchannel with dimensions $600{\mu}m{\times}600{\mu}m$ was investigated. Nitrogen and water were used as test fluids. The superficial velocities of the liquid and gas were in the range of 0.05 - 1 m/s, and 0.1 - 1 m/s, respectively, where the Taylor flow was observed. The bubble length, liquid slug length, bubble velocity, and bubble generation frequency were measured by analyzing the images captured using a high-speed camera. Under similar inlet superficial velocity conditions, in the case of gas injection to the main channel at the merging T-junction (T_gas-liquid), the lengths of the bubble and liquid slug were longer, and the bubble generation frequency was lower than in the case of liquid injection to the main channel at the merging T-junction (T_liquid-gas). On the other hand, in both cases, the bubble velocity was almost the same. The previous correlation proposed using experimental data for T_liquid-gas had predicted the present experimental data of bubble length, bubble velocity, liquid slug length, and bubble generation frequency for T_gas-liquid to be ~24%, ~9%, ~39%, ~55%, respectively.
As a power transmission line supplying power to a densely populated city, the high temperature superconducting (HTS) cable is expected to one of the most effective cables with a compact size because of its high current density. The verification of HTS power cable system have been progressed by KEPRI. A cooling system for a 3-phase 100m HTS power cable with 22.9kV/1.25kA was installed and tested at KEPCO's Gochang power testing center in Korea. The system consists of a liquid nitrogen decompression cooling system with a cooling capacity of 3kW and a closed circulation system of subcooled liquid nitrogen. Several performance tests of the cable system with respect to the cooling such as cooling capacity, heat load and temperature stability, were performed at several temperatures. Thermal cycle test, cool-down to liquid nitrogen temperature and warm-up to room temperature, was also performed to investigate thermal cycle influences. The outline of the installed cooling system and performance test results are presented in this paper.
This paper describes numerical modeling of transcritical and supercritical fluid flows within a liquid propellant rocket engine. In the present paper, turbulence is modeled by standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. A conserved scalar approach in conjunction with multi-environment probability density function model is used to account for the turbulent mixing of real-fluids in the transcritical and supercritical region. The two real-fluid equations of state and dense-fluid correction schemes for mixtures are used to construct thermodynamic data library based on the conserved scalar. In this study, calculations are made on two cryogenic nitrogen jets under different chamber pressures. Sensitivity analysis for two different real-fluid equations of sate is particularly emphasized. Based on numerical results, precise structures of cryogenic nitrogen jets are discussed in detail. Numerical results show that the current real-fluid model can predict the essential features of the cryogenic liquid nitrogen jets.

The characteristics of a gas-liquid Taylor (slug) flow in a square micro-channel with dimensions of $600{\mu}m{\times}600{\mu}m$ are experimentally investigated in this paper. The test fluids were nitrogen and water. The superficial velocities of the liquid and gas were in the ranges of 0.01 - 3 m/s and 0.1 - 3 m/s, respectively. The bubble and liquid slug lengths, bubble velocities, and bubble frequencies for various inlet conditions were measured by analyzing optical images obtained with a high-speed camera. It was found that the measured values (bubble and liquid slug lengths, bubble velocities) were not in good agreement with the values obtained using empirical models presented in the existing literature. Modified models for the bubble and liquid slug lengths and bubble velocity are suggested and shown to be in good agreement (${\pm}20$) with the measured values. Moreover, the bubble frequency could be predicted well by the relationship between the unit cell length and its velocity.
To study the effect of freezing rate on the duality of frozen abalone(Haliotis gigantea, GMELIN) liquid nitrogen spray freezing, air blast freezing, semi-air blast freezing, and still air freezing were carried out. The rheological change, protein denaturation, and free water content of frozen and thawed abalone were examined at the period of 0, 1, 2, and 3 month during cold Storage at $-20^{\circ}C$. The results are summarized as follows : 1. The onset and duration of rigor mortis of fresh abalone was faster and shorter as compared to that of fishes. 2. There was no difference in compression value and shear value between freezing methods but they varied with a slight decrease in storage period. 3. Gradual decrease in extractibility of salt soluble protein was observed in all samples except those frozen with liquid nitrogen. 4. The free water of the foot muscle remained constant during the storage while that of the adductor muscle tended to increase. 5. A significant correlation was observed among the changes of panel texture and free water (P< 0.01), protein denaturation (P<0.05), and compression value (P<0.01).

Characteristics of cryogenic single jet flow were investigated. Liquid nitrogen was injected into a high-pressure chamber and formed single jet. Ambient condition around jet was changed from subcritical to superctirical condition of nitrogen. Injector geometries also were changed. A shape of the jet and core diameter were measured by flow visualization technique, and core spreading angle was calculated. Flow instability was found at atmospheric pressure condition. As ambient pressure increased, core spreading angle was increased and maintained after certain pressure.

Composite insulation system of liquid nitrogen and solid spacer is widely applied in high temperature superconducting power machine. This study has three step procedure. As follow, first step is composition of parallel deposited electrode and vertically deposited electrode along the direction of immersion in liquid nitrogen($LN_2$). Second step is investigation into surface flashover voltage of solid spacer under partially immersed in $LN_2$, and last step is comparison the result of this research with that of fully immersed in $LN_2$ and at cryogenic temperature gaseous nitrogen($GN_2$). This result presented that surface flashover voltage along solid spacer half immersed in $LN_2$ was almost the same as that of fully immersed spacer when the thickness of spacer(t) was t<10 mm. In the case of t>10 mm, however, spacer flashover voltage was equal to that obtained in $GN_2$ at cryogenic temperature.
