In this paper, spray and combustion characteristics of a liquid-fueled ramjet engine were experimentally investigated. The spray penetrations were measured to clarify the spray characteristics of a liquid jet injected transversely into the subsonic vitiated airstream, which Is maintained a high velocity and temperature. The spray penetrations are increased with decreasing airstream velocity, increasing airstream temperature, and increasing air-fuel momentum ratio. To compensate our results of penetrations, the new experimental equation were modified from Inamura's equation. In the case of insufficient penetration, the combustion phenomenon in ram-combustor were unstable. Therefore, the sufficient penetration must be considered to make a stable flame.
An experimental study on the spray characteristics of aerated-liquid jets discharged from effervescent injectors to a subsonic crossflow was conducted to investigate effects of a gas to liquid mass ratio (GLR) and a ratio of the orifice length to the diameter (L/d). The present effervescent injectors consist of a plain orifice injector and an aerator. To analyze breakup length and spray trajectory, instantaneous spray images were taken by a high speed camera. As the GLR increased, the spray penetration became higher under the same liquid mass flow rate and the breakup length became shorter due to the bubble expansion or the annular liquid film breakup. To predict the spray trajectory of two-phase flow jets into the crossflow, the homogeneous and the separated flow models were compared.

In this paper, high speed camera images were used to analyze the supercritical injection behavior of liquid hydrocarbon compounds used as main components of propellant fuel. Decane and Methylcyclohexane (MCH), which have different critical points among kerosene constituents, were selected as experimental fluid and Shadowgraphy technique was used for the analysis. The difference in the temperature variation from the initial injector state of the subcritical condition until the vaporization occurs was represented by the different behaviors of Decane and MCH. However, under the Supercritical conditions, the enthalpy of vaporization near the critical point approaches zero and the phase change to the Supercritical phase occurs instead of vaporization process. In the phase change of the Supercritical system, there was no rapid density change, so the liquid state image was observed in both the Decane and MCH.

To reduce the supersonic jet noise from the liquid rocket engine, water injetion silencers were designed and tested. Test variables were the mass flow rate of water jet, the length of primary pipe and the diameter of expansion pipe. Followings are the results of this study. 1. From the same mass flow rate of water, longer primary pipe was more effective to reduce the noise. 2. Noise level was significantly reduced with increasingly water flow rate. 3. The optimum water flow rate was 10~12 times of the propellant flow rate. 4. By installing expansion pipe, noise level was reduced approximately 30㏈ compared to without expansion pipe

Generation characteristics of electrospray droplets for highly viscous liquid have been investigated by measuring size distributions of droplets emitted from the Taylor cone using glycerol solutions with various conductivities. Because of very small volatility of glycerol, droplet sizes can be measured by an aerodynamic size spectrometer (TSI Aerosizer DSP) with negligible evaporation of droplets. For highly conducting and viscous liquid, the sizes of the droplets electrosprayed from the Taylor cone are found to be relatively insensitive to applied voltages and the electrosprays assisted by the corona discharge call produce monodisperse droplets as long as the corona intensity is not too high. Near the minimum flow rate where a liquid cone is stable, the spray tends to consist of a one -peak monodisperse distribution of drop lets. However, at high flow rates, the spray bifurcates into bimodal distributions, which are consistent with the result of the previous study for less viscous liquids than our liquids. For liquid flow rates (Q) below 1 nl/s, the measured droplet diameters by the aerosizer are in the range of 0.30 to 1.2 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ for the glycerol solutions. The diameters of monodisperse droplets scale approximately with $r^*=Q_$\tau$(Q$\tau$){^1/3}$ where $r^*$ is a characteristic length and $\tau$is the electrical relaxation time of the fluid. However, when compared with several represe ntative scaling laws, the droplet diameters are two to six factors greater than those predicted by the scaling laws. This may be closely related to the combined effect of the much higher viscosity and the electrical charge on the jet breakup of glycerol so solution.

Two liquids which are generally used as fuels of rockets are mixed and their mixing process is quantitatively investigated by the use of particle image velocimetry (PIV). As working fluids for the liquid mixing, Dimethylfuran (DMF) and JetA1 oils have been used. Since the specific gravity of DMF is larger than that of JetA1 oil, the DMF oil has been set at the lower part of the JetA1 oil. For better visualization of the mixing process, Rhodamin B powder has been blended into the DMF oil. An agitator having 3 blades has been used for mixing the two liquids. For quantitative visualization, a LCD monitor has been used as a light source. A color camera, camcoder, has been used for recording the mixing process. The images captured by the camcoder have been digitized into three color components, R, G, and B. The color intensities of R, G, and B have been used as the inputs of the neural network of which hidden layer has 20 neurons. Color-to-concentration calibration has been performed before commencing the main experiments. Once this calibration is completed, the temporal changes of the concentration of the DMF has been quantitatively analyzed by using the constructed measurement system.

The spray characteristics of liquid jet minted in subsonic cross-flow were investigated numerically and experimentally. The behaviors of column, penetration and breakup of plain liquid jet in non-swirling cross-flow of air have been studied. Numerical and physical models are based on a modified KIVAII code. The primary atomization is represented by a wave model based on the KH(Kelvin-Helmholtz) instability that is generated by a high interface relative velocity between the liquid and gas flows. CCD camera has been utilized in oder to capture the spray trajectory. The nozzle diameter was 0.5 mm and its L/D ratios were between 1 and 5. Numerical and experimental results indicate that the breakup point is delayed by increasing gas momentum ratio, the penetration decreases by increasing Weber number and the turbulent or nonturbulent liquid jet is obtained at different L/D ratio.

On this paper study is concentrated on the breakup and atomization characteristics of spray formed by impinging jet injectors(like-doublet) used in liquid rocket engine(LRE). On the process of breakup and atomization, injection velocity and ambient gas pressure are the main parameters, so that these are used as variables that specify the experimental condition. Injection velocity varied from 3m/s to 30m/s and ambient gas pressure changed from 0.1MPa to 4.0MPa with nitrogen gas. As results, measured physical quantities decreased with increasing injection velocity and ambient gas pressure. But the decreasing ratios are different from those of the theory.

Combustion oscillations are caused by a coupling between acoustic waves and unsteady heat release. They can be eliminated using passive controller such as a helmholtz resonator. But, helmholtz resonator is normally only effective over a narrow frequency range. In this work, helmholtz resonator is applied for reducing the combustion oscillations and we vary the helmholtz resonator volume using piston in oder to tune in the wide range of operating conditions. As the result, it is found that the dominant combustion oscillations can be reduced by optimizing the size of resonator volume. Also, from these results, we investigate feasibility of actively tuned passive control
Flow characteristics at secondary recirculation zone in a liquid fuel ramjet combustor are investigated using CFD and 3-D Stereoscopic PIV method. The combustors have two rectangular inlets that form 90 degree each other. Three guide vanes were installed in each rectangular inlet to improve the flow stability. The tested angle of the air intakes was 60 degree. The experiments were performed in the water tunnel test with the same Reynolds number in the case of Mach0.3 at inlet. Both computational and experimental results showed the secondary recirculation flow occurred at the front junction of inlet main stream and combustor chamber. The size of secondary recirculation region increased with upon closer center of axial combustor. Since the performance of combustor depends on not only the main recirculation in the dome region but also the secondary recirculation flow in a junction region, the optimal angle of the air intakes should consider the recirculation size as frame holder.
