Synthesis and Characterization of New Main Chain Liquid Crystalline Coumarin Compound with Ester Moiety (Ester기를 갖는 새로운 주쇄형 액정 coumarin 화합물의 합성 및 특성분석)

  • 4-(6-bromohexyloxy)benzoic acid was synthesized from benzyl 4-Hydroxybenzoate and 1,6-dibromohexane. It was reacted with hydroquinone to obtain a new mesogenic ester having an bromine group. One kind of new photoresponsive coumarin compound was prepared by the reaction of mesogenic ester with coumarin sensitive to the ultraviolet. Structures of the compound were identified by FT-IR and $^1H$-NMR spectroscopies. Their phase transition temperatures and thermal stability were also investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM) and x-ray diffraction analysis. From optical polarizing microscopy, the prepared compound was found to show enantiotropic liquid crystallinity with smectic and nematic textures.

  • In this study, five series of novel polyurethanes was synthesized by the polyaddition reaction of diisocyanates such as 2,6-tolylene diisocyanate(2,6-TDI), 2,5-tolylene diisocyanate(2,5-TDI), 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate(2,4-TDI), and 1,4-phenylene diisocyanate(1,4-PDI), hexamethylene diisocyanate(HDI) with 4,4'-Bis(3-hydroxypropoxy)biphenyl (BP3), 4,4'-bis(3-hydroxypropoxy)biphenyl exhibited a smectic type mesophase. Monotropic mesophase was found for all synthesized liquid crystalline polyurethanes except HDI/BP3. In contrast, 1,4-PDI/BP3 without a methyl substituent in the phenylene unit exhibited no explicit mesomorphic behavior, which was confirmed by DSC and polarizing microscopy experiments.   • 유기 고분자는 기존 무기물질의 한계성을 감안해 볼 때, 전기 및 광학적 특성이 우수하여 이에 대한 연구가 매우 활발히 진행되고 있다. 이중에서 Azo 화합물은 특별한 물리적, 광학적 성질과 그 잠재적인 응용성 때문에 계속해서 지금도 많은 관심을 끌고 있다. 그래서 Azo 화합물은 액정과 함께 비선형 광학성질을 가지는 물질에 응용될 수 있으며, 또한 광 유도현상의 이색성(dichroism)및 복굴절(birefringence) 현상 같은 특성을 나타내고 있다.$^{l)2)3)}$ 선형 광학 실험중에서 단순 입사 방법$^{4)}$ 을 이용하여 전기 광학 계수를 측정하였으며, 다시 확장 지수함수(stretched exponential)모델$^{5)}$ 로써 극화(poling)와 완화(relaxation)의 꼴을 보았다. Development of Liquid Crystal Optic Modulation Based X-ray Dosimeter by Using CdS Sensor (CdS 센서를 이용한 액정 광변조 X-선 검출 시스템 개발)

  • In this study, the liquid-crystal optical modulation X-ray detection system using a CdS which is a family of II-IV compound semiconductor was proposed. The system consist of the detector, the signal processing part, the liquid-crystal driving parts, microcontroller, and I/O parts, and was designed to be suitable for miniaturization and portable. In addition, the system can measure a wide range X-ray by using the detecting range selection. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed system, the CdS sensor's output characteristics were confirmed in accordance with changes of dose, and excellent correlation was determined. And also, the optical penetration ratio was discussed in accordance with changes of the applied voltage by measuring the change of the liquid-crystal in accordance with changes of the applied voltage. Through these results, the characteristics of the liquid-crystal optical modulation system such as the excellent reproducibility and the noise immunity were confirmed. And we considered that the CdS cell-based liquid-crystal optical modulated portable X-ray detection system could be applied to compact, low-cost, portable system.

  • Eleven new compounds that are composed of bis(p-substituted phenyl) terephthalate unitand the decyloxy pendant as lateral were synthesized and their thermal and liquid crystalline properties were studied by the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and on a hot-stage of a polarizing microscope. The ter-minal substituent groups of the compound were varied; X= -H(II-H), -F(lI-F), -CII(II-CI), -Br(ll-Br), -I(II-I), -$NO_2(lI-NO_2$), $-CF_3(II-CF_3$), -$OC_2H_5(II-OC_2H_5$), -$OC_4H_9(II-OC_4H_9$), -$C_6H_5(Il-C_6H_5$). The compounds of $II-OC_2H_5,\;II-OC_4H_9$ and $II-C_6H_5$ were monotropically nematic. In contrast, the compounds of Il-H, II-F, II-Cl, II-Br, II-I, $lI-NO_2$, $II-CF_3$, and II-CN did not show liquid crystalline properties.
