A Study on the Discrepancies of Gas Measurement and the Solution Measures between Suppliers and Consumers in South Korea (도시(都市)가스 계량(計量) 편차(偏差) 및 해소방안(解消方案)에 관(關)한 소고(小考))

  • KOGAS, established in 1983 by law to ensure stable gas supply to the public, is responsible for the wholesale distribution to 30 city gas companies that deal with the retail distribution of natural gas in their geographic areas. The gas imported by KOGAS is measured by checking the level difference of LNG shipped in tankers before and after unloading. The analysis of gas composition is essential because the imported gas price is determined by its calorific value. The turbine meter is widely used for measuring the gas sold to city gas companies. Unlike the metering system for power plants, there is no gas chromatograph since the custody transfer of gas to the city gas companies is not billed by calorific value, but by volume basis. The gas quantity that a city gas company has bought from KOGAS is not equal to the quantity that the company sold to its customers. There have been some discrepancies between the wholesale gas meter readouts and retail ones due to some inherent errors of meters and some operational issues of the meters. This paper investigates the controversies regarding the real quantity of gas between distributors and consumers. It will discus and suggest desirable policies, both technically and economically, in order to solve the discrepancies of gas measurement.

Comparison of temperature measurements methods to investigate the causes of deformation of packaging materials during microwave heating (전자레인지의 가열조리 시 포장재의 열변형 원인 규명을 위한 온도 측정 방법 비교)

  • To investigate the causes of the thermal deformations of packaging materials when microwave-heating ready-to-eat sauce products packaged in stand-up pouches, patterns of temperature changes were determined using an infra-red thermal imaging camera, a thermo-sensitive tape, and a fiver-optic thermometer. The temperature distributions of spicy chicken sauce and Indian curry samples in a stand-up pouch were found to be uneven during micrewave heating. A sharp increase in the temperature was detected, especially above the filling layers and in the corners of sealing layers of the package. The temperature measurements using an infra-red thermal imaging camera are restricted to the surface, and therefore might underestimate the actual temperature. Using a thermo-sensitive tape, temperature up to $200^{\circ}C$ were measured in the spicy chicken sauce sample showing package deformation. When the temperature is measured using a fiber-optic thermometer, it is crucial to have precise sensor performance to accurately measure the temperature in a narrow hot-spot area of the package. In this experiment, the fiber-optic thermometer was attached to a GaAs crystal sensor, which obtained more sensitive and accurate temperature measurements than those by a convectional sensor.

The Effect of Prunus Mume Extracts on the Growth of HepG2 and HeLa Cell Lines (간암 및 자궁암 세포주 증식에 미치는 오매 추출물의 영향)

  • This study was undertaken to investigate the inhibitory effect of prunus fume extracts on the growth of Hep G2 and HeLa cells. Prunus mums was extracted using the following solvents hexane, chloroform, ethylacetate, methanol, and hot water. The effect on the growth of each cancer cell line was examined by MTT (3-[4, 5-dimethylthiaeol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay, cytotoxicity testing, and microscopic observation. The ethylacetate extracts of Prunus muse at the concentration of 250 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml exhibited the greatest inhibitory effect on the growth of Hep G2 in the MW assay. In cytotoxicity testing, the treatment of the Hep G2 cells with ethylacetate extracts (1000 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml for 72 hrs) destroyed 75% of the cells, and morphological changes were also observed. futhermore, the hexane extracts of Prunes muse at the concentration of 250 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml exhibited the greatest inhibitory effect on the growth of HeLa cells in the MTT assay. The treatment of the HeLa cells with the hexane extracts (1000 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml for 72 hrs) resulted in the destruction of 68% of the cells. Fibroblasts were not affected by either ethylacetate or hexane extracts of prunus muse.

A Study on the Probability of BLEVE of Above-ground LP Gas Storage Tanks Exposed to External Fire (지상식 LPG 저장탱크의 외부화재에 의한 BLEVE 가능성 해석)

  • The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the BLEVE probability of LP gas storage tanks which are relatively more dangerous, by the deductive calculating method using the results of Birk's pilot tank test and the required heat capacity of BLEVE. The result that BLEVEs can occur in only above 43.68 percent of liquid filling level under $600^{\circ}C$ of tank pate temperature and $53^{\circ}C$ of inner liquid temperature, was obtained and will be useful for preventing the BLEVE of LP gas storage tanks in fire sites. In addition, this research showed conditions of external leak and fire causing BLEVE, based on 15ton capacity of LP gas tank which has the same specifications as those in Puchon LP gas filling station accident. The result of the calculation is that the minimum pool fire conditions of BLEVE are above 7.2mm equivalent diameter under a liquid release condition and above 17.6mm equivalent diameter under a two-phase release condition. In the end, the result of calculating the pool size corresponding the above conditions using EFFECTS version 2.1, concludes that a minimum of 3.3 meters of diameter and 10.4 meters of height should be needed for BLEVE outbreak.
