Reliable Evaluation of Dynamic Ground Properties from Cross-hole Seismic Test using Spying-loaded Lateral Impact Source (스프링식 횡방항 발진 크로스홀 탄성파 시험을 통한 지반 동적 특성의 합리적 산정)

  • Soil and rock dynamic properties such as shear wave velocity $(V_s)$, compressional wave velocity $(V_p)$ and corresponding Poisson's ratio (v) are very important geotechnical parameters in predicting deformational behavior of structures as well as practicing seismic design and performance evaluation. In an effort to measure the parameter efficiently and accurately, various bore-hole seismic testing techniques have been, thus, developed and used during past several decades. In this study, cross-hole seismic testing technique which is known as the most reliable seismic method was adopted for obtaining geotechnical dynamic properties. To perform successfully the cross-hole test for rock as well as soil layers regardless of the ground water level, spring-loaded source which impact laterally a subsurface ground in vertical bore-hole was developed and applied at three study areas, which contain four sites composed of two existing port sites and two new LNG storage facility sites. The geotechnical dynamic properties such as $V_s,\;V_p$ and v with depth from the soil surface to the engineering and seismic bedrock were efficiently determined from the laterally impacted cross-hole seismic tests at study sites, and were provided as the fundamental parameters for the seismic performance evaluation of the existing ports and the seismic design of the LNG storage facilities.

Estimation of Weathering Characteristics of Sandstone and Andesite by Freeze-Thaw Test (동결융해시험에 의한 사암 및 안산암의 풍화특성 평가)

  • Variations of physical properties such as weight loss rate, wave velocity and uniaxial compressive strength after performing freeze-thaw cyclic test were measured in order to define weathering characteristics of sandstone and andesite. Weight change in specimens of the two rocks decreased with increasing the repetition number of freeze-thaw cyclic test. In particular, weight loss of andesite specimens was very irregular. P-wave velocity of sandstone specimens decreased more than 5%. On the other hand, P-wave velocity of andesite specimens do not vary up to 500 cycles and decreased more than 5% after 1000 cycles. This implies that the sandstone are easily weakened and loosened by weathering processes, while the andesite are relatively strong. In addition, the wave velocity changes of the andesite specimens coincident with the weight change. Uniaxial compressive strengths of the sandstone specimens slightly decreased at the early stage of the freezing-thawing cyclic test, then tended to be irregular after 64 cycles. In conclusion, the rock specimens showed smaller weight loss, less had lower strength reduction rate.

A Study on the Correlation between Uniaxial Compressive Strength of Rock by Elastic Wave Velocity and Elastic Modulus of Granite in Seoul and Gyeonggi Region (서울·경기지역 화강암의 탄성파속도와 탄성계수에 의한 암석의 일축압축강도와의 상관성 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to attain the correlation analysis and thereby to deduce the uniaxial compressive strength of rock specimens through the elastic wave velocity and the elastic modulus among the physical characteristics measured from the rock specimens collected during drilling investigations in Seoul and Gyeonggi region. Method: Experiments were conducted in the laboratory with 119 granite specimens in order to derive the correlation between the compressive strength of the rocks and elastic wave velocity and elastic modulus. Results: In the case of granite, the results of the analysis of the interaction between the compressive strength of a rock and the elastic wave velocity and elastic modulus were found to be less reliable in the relation equation as a whole. And it is believed that the estimation of the compressive strength by the elastic wave velocity and elastic modulus is less used because of the composition of non-homogeneous particles of granite. Conclusion: In this study, the analysis of correlation between the compressive strength of a rock and the elastic wave velocity and elastic modulus was performed with simple regression analysis and multiple regression analysis. The coefficient determination ($R^2$) of simple regression analysis was shown between 0.61 and 0.67. Multiple regression analysis was 0.71. Thus, using multiple regression analysis when estimating compressive strength can increase the reliability of the correlation. Also, in the future, a variety of statistical analysis techniques such as recovery analysis, and artificial neural network analysis, and big data analysis can lead to more reliable results when estimating the compressive sterength of a rock based on the elastic wave velocity and elastic modulus.

Relationship between Unconfined Compressive Strength and Shear Wave Velocity of Cemented Sands (고결모래의 일축압축강도와 전단파속도의 상관관계)

  • Cemented soils have been widely used in road and dam construction, and recently ground improvement of soft soils. The strength of such cemented soils can be tested by using cored sample or laboratory-prepared specimen through unconfined compression or triaxial tests. It takes time to core a sample or prepare a testing specimen in the laboratory. In a certain situation, it is necessary to determine the in-situ strength of cemented soils very quickly and on time. In this study, the relation between unconfined compressive strength and shear wave velocity was investigated for predicting the in-situ strength of cemented soils. A small cemented specimen with 5 cm in diameter and 10 cm in height was prepared by Nakdong river sand and ordinary Portland cement. Its cement ratios were 4, 8, 12, and 16% and air cured for 7, 14, and 28 days. For recycling of resources, a blast furnace slag was also used with sodium hydroxide as an alkaline activator. The shear wave velocity for cemented soils was measured and then unconfined compressive strength test was carried out. As a cement ratio increased, the shear wave velocity and unconfined compressive strength increased due to increased density and denser structure. The relation between unconfined compressive strength and shear wave velocity increased nonlinearly for cemented soils with less than 16% of cement ratio.

A Numerical Study on the Compression Wave Generated by the Train Entering a Tunnel (열차가 터널에 진입할 때 발생하는 압축파에 대한 수치해석)

  • The numerical simulations on the train entering a tunnel were performed by solving unsteady axi-symmetric problems. In the case that 5th order velocity profile is used to reduce the effects of the pressure wave generated by the train starting abruptly, the effect of the initial distance between the train and the tunnel were examined. The impulsive start gives undesired pressure disturbances to the flow field including inside the tunnel. But 5th order velocity profile with initial distance more than 80 m gives much stable pressure variance in time, and pressure distribution inside the tunnel in space. The distance to the train reaches the highest running velocity from the start should be more than 80 m when the train speed is 350 km/h.

Development of An Automatic Incident Detection Model Using Wilcoxon Rank Sum Test (Wilcoxon Rank Sum Test 기법을 이용한 자동돌발상황검지 모형 개발)

  • 본 연구는 Wilcoxon Rank Sum Test 기법을 이용한 자동 돌발상황 검지 모형을 개발하는 것이다. 본 연구의 수행을 위하여 고속도로에 설치된 루프 차량 검지기(Loop Vehicle Detection System)에서 수집된 점유율 데이터를 사용하였다. 기존의 검지모형은 산정하기가 까다로운 임계치에 의하여 돌발상황을 검지하는 방식이었다. 반면 본 연구 모델은 위치와 시간대 교통 패턴에 관계없이 모형을 일정하게 적용하며, 지속적으로 돌발상황 지점과 상·하류의 교통패턴을 비교 검정 기법인 Wilcoxon Rank Sum Test 기법을 사용하여 돌발상황 검지를 수행하도록 하였다. 연구모형의 검증을 위한 테스트 결과 시간과 위치에 관계없이 정확하고 빠른 검지시간(돌발 상황 발생 후 2∼3분)을 가짐을 알 수 있었다. 또한 기존의 모형인 APID, DES, DELOS모형과 비교검증을 위하여 검지율 및 오보율 테스트를 수행한 결과 향상된 검지 능력(검지율 : 89.01%, 오보율 : 0.97%)을 나타남을 알 수 있었다. 그러나 압축파와 같은 유사 돌발상황이 발생되면 제대로 검지를 하지 못하는 단점을 가지고 있으며 향후 이에 대한 연구가 추가된다면 더욱 신뢰성 있는 검지모형으로 발전할 것이다.

  • The numerical simulations on the train entering a tunnel are performed by solving unsteady axi-symmetric problems. To reduce the effects of the pressure wave generated by the train starting abruptly, several starting methods of the train are examined. The high order velocity increase gives better results than those for the linear velocity increase. The high order velocity increase gives good results for the pressure rise by the train entering a tunnel, too. The distance to the train reaches the highest running velocity from the start should be more than 60 m when the train speed is 350 km/h.

  • JPEG은 정지 영상의 압축 표준으로 8$\times$8 블록을 기반으로 DCT 변환을 한 후 양자화 및 엔트로피 부호화 과정을 통해 압축이 이루어진다. DCT는 이미지를 공간 영역에서 주파수 영역으로 변환하는 기법으로 대체로 저주파 성분은 저주파 성분끼리, 고주파 성분은 고주파 성분끼리 모아준다. 이러한 형태는 필요 없는 성분들을 쉽게 제거할 수 있어 압축이 효율적으로 이루어지도록 한다. 블록 기반의 압축 기법을 적용할 때 흔히 나타나는 문제점은 블록 기반으로 인해 발생하는 블?킹 현상으로서 이는 양자화로 인한 정보의 손실에서 비롯되며 그 기본이 되는 8$\times$8 블록 단위로 나타난다. 본 연구세어서는 작은 블록 단위를 16$\times$16의 매크로블록으로 확대한 개념을 이용하여 매크로 블록 내의 수직 및 수평 방향으로 1:2단위로 샘플링한 4개의 8$\times$8블록 간의 블록킹 경계로 없애 주도록 하고자 한다. 또한 16$\times$16의 DCT 블록 대신 16$\times$16 블록내의 8$\times$8 블록들을 이용함으로써 표준 기법에서 이용되는 8$\times$8 단위의 양자화 테이블이나 RLE기법 등을 그대로 적용할 수 있다.

꿈의 DMB 현실로 오나

  • 꿈의 디지털 방송시대가 성큼 다가오고 있다. 지상파 디지털 방송은 이미 본방송에 들어 갔으며 차세대 뉴 미디어 산업의 초아로 각광 받고 있는 디지털멀티미디어 방송(DMB)도 내년째 첫 선을 보일 예정이다. 그러나 뒤 늦게 전송방식, 압축방식 등 디지털 방송을 둘러싼 기술 논쟁이 과열돼 소비자들이 혼란을 격고 있다. 지상파 디지털 방송은 유럽식, 미국식 전송방식을, DMB는 멀티미디어 압축 방식에 대한 효율성을 놓고 논쟁을 그치지 않고 있다. 디지털 TV를 접한지 얼마되지 않아 DMB라는 새로운 매체를 접하게 되는 소비자들에게 모든 것이 생소할 따름이다.
