Mechanical properties and neutron shielding performance of concrete with amorphous boron steel fiber have been investigated in this study. The measurement of this investigation includes air contents, slump loss, compressive strength, flexural strength, flexural toughness and neutron shielding rate. Four different fiber volume fractions were selected ranging from 0.25% to 1.0% by volume for the amorphous boron steel fibers. The testing results showed that the flexural toughness and the neutron shielding rate were increase with the increase of volume fraction for amorphous boron steel fiber. Based on the result, it is concluded that the concrete with the amorphous boron steel fiber can be effectively applied to shield the neutron and to improve mechanical properties.
Long-term stability and delayed failure of granite were evaluated through the laboratory test based on Wilkins method and Brazilian disc test (BDT) which yields tensile strength, mode I fracture toughness and subcritical crack growth parameters. Then, the long-term strength of granite was estimated by using analytical models and long-term stability of compressed air-energy storage (CAES) pilot cavern pressurized up to 5 ~ 6 MPa was evaluated using numerical code, FRACOD with the determined subcritical crack growth parameters. The results of test and analyses showed that the subcritical crack growth index, n was determined as 29.39 and the inner pressure of 5 ~ 6 MPa had an insignificant effect on the long-term stability of pilot cavern. It was also found that the measurement and analysis of acoustic emission events can describe the accumulation of damage due to subcritical crack growth quantitatively. That is, AE monitoring can provide the current status of rock under loading if we make an identical installation condition in the field with that of the laboratory test.
Even though shotcrete is a main support for securing the stability of tunnel, the performance of shotcrete is not properly checked due to various difficulties arisen from the characteristics of materials themselves which constitute shotcrete, such as steel fibers and accelerators, and the on-site quality control. In this study, the actual conditions of shotcrete applied to expressway tunnel construction sites were tried to find out, and then some improvement was tried to derive. For this purpose, the characteristics of steel fibers and accelerators supplied to the expressway construction sites were investigated. Also, shotcrete specimens were prepared at the tunnel sites and performance tests were carried out. For steel fiber, domestic production states were investigated, and carbon content and tensile strength were measured using the steel fibers collected in the construction sites. For three types of accelerators such as aluminate, cement mineral and alkali-free, basic properties and total amount of alkali contents were analyzed. Shotcrete specimens were prepared using on-site shotcrete machine with regard to mix designs and types of accelerators. Using these specimens, uniaxial compression tests and flexural tests were performed. As the results, compressive strength, flexural strength, flexural toughness, and etc. were compared with types of acclerators and mix designs.
Reliability in tunnel analysis is necessary to accomplish technically sound design and economical construction. For this, a thorough understanding of the construction procedure including the ground-support interaction has to be obtained. This paper describes a proper modelling technique to simulate the behavior of the steel fiber reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) which maintain the supporting capability in post-failure regime. The additional supporting effect of the steel support was also verified by 3-D analyses and a new load distribution factor were proposed. The use of the plastic moment limit (PML) alone can eliminate the occurrence of the awkwardly high tensile stress in the shotcrete and can successfully model the post-peak ductile behavior of the SFRS. But with this method, moment is limited whenever the stress caused by moment reaches tensile strength of the shotcrete irrespective of the stress by axial force. Therefore, it was necessary to find a more comprehensive method which can reflect the influence of the moment and axial force. This can be accomplished by the proper use of "liner element" which is the built-in model in FLAC. In this model, the peak and residual strength as well as the uniaxial compressive strength of the SFRS can be specified. Analyses were conducted with these two models on the 2-lane road tunnels excavated in class IV and V rock mass and results were compared with the conventional elastic beam model. Results showed that both models can reflect the fracture toughness of the SFRS which could not be accomplished by the elastic beam model.
The effects of mineral admixtures on the bonding properties of cement mortar to polyolefin based synthetic fiber were evaluated. The mineral admixtures consisted of 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% fly ash, blast furnace slag, and metakaolin in cement. Bond interactions between the cement mortar and the polyolefin based synthetic fiber were determined by Dog-bone bond tests. Bond tests of the polyolefin based synthetic fiber showed an increase in pullout load with the strength of the cement mortar. Also, the interface toughness of polyolefin based synthetic fiber in cement mortar increased as the fly ash, blast furnace slag, and metakaolin contents increased. The microstructure of polyolefin based synthetic fiber surface was examined after the pullout test to analyze the frictional resistant force according to the replacement ratio of fly ash, blast furnace slag, and metakaolin during the pullout process of polyolefin based synthetic fiber in cement mortar. The scratched of polyolefin based synthetic fibers increased with the replacement ratio of fly ash, blast furnace slag, and metakaolin. Also, the interface toughness was enhanced by adhesion forces induced by the fly ash, blast furnace slag, and metakaolin.
The two dimensional size effect of specimen gauge section ($length{\;}{\times}{\;}width$) was investigated on the compressive behavior of a T300/924 $\textrm{[}45/-45/0/90\textrm{]}_{3s}$, carbon fiber-epoxy laminate. A modified ICSTM compression test fixture was used together with an anti-buckling device to test 3mm thick specimens with a $30mm{\;}{\times}{\;}30mm,{\;}50mm{\;}{\times}{\;}50mm,{\;}70mm{\;}{\times}{\;}70mm{\;}and{\;}90mm{\;}{\times}{\;}90mm$ gauge length by width section. In all cases failure was sudden and occurred mainly within the gauge length. Post failure examination suggests that $0^{\circ}$ fiber microbuckling is the critical damage mechanism that causes final failure. This is the matrix dominated failure mode and its triggering depends very much on initial fiber waviness. It is suggested that manufacturing process and quality may play a significant role in determining the compressive strength. When the anti-buckling device was used on specimens, it was showed that the compressive strength with the device was slightly greater than that without the device due to surface friction between the specimen and the device by pretoque in bolts of the device. In the analysis result on influence of the anti-buckling device using the finite element method, it was found that the compressive strength with the anti-buckling device by loaded bolts was about 7% higher than actual compressive strength. Additionally, compressive tests on specimen with an open hole were performed. The local stress concentration arising from the hole dominates the strength of the laminate rather than the stresses in the bulk of the material. It is observed that the remote failure stress decreases with increasing hole size and specimen width but is generally well above the value one might predict from the elastic stress concentration factor. This suggests that the material is not ideally brittle and some stress relief occurs around the hole. X-ray radiography reveals that damage in the form of fiber microbuckling and delamination initiates at the edge of the hole at approximately 80% of the failure load and extends stably under increasing load before becoming unstable at a critical length of 2-3mm (depends on specimen geometry). This damage growth and failure are analysed by a linear cohesive zone model. Using the independently measured laminate parameters of unnotched compressive strength and in-plane fracture toughness the model predicts successfully the notched strength as a function of hole size and width.
The results of an experimental study on the manufacture and the mechanical properties of carbon fiber rekforced silica fume . cement composites and light weight fly ash . cement composites are presented in this paper.
11s the test results show, the flexural strength, fracture toughness and ductility of CF reinforced silica fume . cement composites were remarkably increased by the increase of carbon fiber contents. And the workability of the fly ash . cement composites were improved, but the compressive and flexural strength and bulk specific gravity of them are decreased by increasing the ratio of fly ash to cement. And the compressive and flexural strength of the fly ash cement composites by cured under the hot water were improved than those by mositure cured. Also, the
manufacturing process technology of lightweight fly ash . cement composites in replacement of general autoclaved lightweight concrete was developed and its optimum mix proportions were proposed.

Shotcrete for support of tunnel structures may contact with groundwater. The hazardous components in groundwater may cause corrosion of shotcrete. Also, the hazardous components may deteriorate the engineering properties of shotcrete, such as compressive strength, bond strength, flexural strength and so forth. The more the effect of the hazardous components on the shotcrete may increase, the more the stability of tunnel structure may decrease. The specimens were artificially immersed in various chemical solutions including hazardous components after the specimens were made at the tunnel construction site. It was performed to analyze the effect of the hazardous components in ground water on the engineering properties of shotcrete. The uniaxial compressive strength test, XRD, SEM were conducted to evaluate the durability and corrosion of shotcrete.

As a general rule, concrete has higher compression strength than bending and toughness. but Ductile fiber reinforced cementitious composite has high toughness property owing to adding a large volume fiber. Therefore uniaxial tensile strength test is imperative to evaluate high toughness property of ductile fiber reinforced cementitious composite in comparison with general concrete test. but in testing compression strength, Result is different by factor of thickness, shape and edge condition. Uniaxial tensile strength test is affected by fiber's length and section area because of cementitious composite property and factor of fiber arrangement. This study evaluates toughness property of ductile fiber reinforced cementitious composite according to thickness and edge condition. The more thickness is thin, the more high performance by fiber arrangement
The purpose of this study is to develop fiber reinforced cement matrix composite (ECC) produced with limestone powder in order to achieve high ductility of the composite, and to evaluate flexural performance of structural members made with ECC. Four kinds of mixture proportions were determined on the basis of the micromechanics and a steady state cracking theory considering the matrix fracture toughness and fiber-matrix interfacial characteristics. The mechanical properties of ECC, represented by strain-hardening behavior in uniaxial tension, were investigated. Also, strength property of the composite was experimentally evaluated. Two structural members made with ECC were produced and tested. Test results were compared with those of conventional concrete structural members. Increased limestone powder contents of ECC provides higher ductility of the composites while generally resulting in a lower strength property. ECC structural members exhibited higher flexural ductility, higher flexural load-carrying capacity and tighter crack width compared to conventional structural members.
