  • To reduce unwanted vibrations in war ship which may be transmitted through underwater path, it is required to use high damping mounts to isolate the vibration. In this work, the beam structure with squeeze mode ER mount is proposed and response characteristics such as acceleration and force transmissibility of beam with constant voltage and optimal controller are experimentally analyzed. The controller is empirically realized and control responses are evaluated in frequency domains. Experiments show vibration reduction capability of squeeze mode ER mount.

  • This paper presents vibration control performance of a squeeze mode ER mount for high static load. After experimentally investigating the field-dependent damping force under the squeeze mode motion, a squeeze mode ER mount which can support 200 kg of static load is designed and manufactured. Displacement transmissibility of the proposed ER mount is experimentally evaluated in frequency domain with respect to the intensity of the electric field, and a sky-hook control algorithm is designed to attenuate unwanted vibration. Vibration isolation capabilities of the flow mode ER mount and rubber mount are compared to those of the proposed squeeze mode ER mount.

  • This paper presents the field-dependent Bingham characteristics and damping force control of an electro-rheological (ER) fluid under squeeze mode operation. The squeeze force of the ER fluid due to the imposed electric field is analyzed and an appropriate size of the disk-type electrode is devised. On the basis of the theoretical model of the ER fluid under squeeze mode operation, the yield stress and response speed of the ER fluid are distilled from the time responses of squeeze force to the step electric potentials. Measured squeeze forces under various excitation conditions are compared with the predicted ones from Bingham model and time constant obtained at the transient response test. In addition, the controllability of the field-dependent damping force of the ER fluid under squeeze mode is experimentally demonstrated by implementing simple PID controller.

  • This paper presents an optimal design of a magnetorheological(MR) fluid-based mount(MR mount) that can be used for to vibration control in diesel engines of ships. In this work, a mount that uses mixed-modes(squeeze mode, flow mode, and shear mode) is proposed and designed. To determine the actuating damping force of the MR mount required for efficient vibration control, the excitation force from a diesel engine is analyzed. In this analysis, a model of a V-type engine is considered. The relationship between the velocity and pressure of gas in terms of the torque acting on the piston is derived. Subsequently, by integrating the field-dependent rheological properties of commercially available MR fluid with the excitation force, the appropriate size of the MR mount is designed. In addition, to achieve the maximum actuating force under geometric constraints, design optimization is undertaken using the ANSYS parametric design language software. Through magnetic density analysis, optimal design parameters such as the bottom gap and radius of coil are determined.

  • An integrated slow mixing/sedimentation and net fit fiber filtration system has been developed to reduce the high concentrations of suspended solid (SS) and total phosphorus (T-P) in the reject water from sewage/wastewater. A filtration device used in this experiment consists of coagulation, in-line mixing, air injection, slow mixing/sedimentation, and filtration processes. The performance test using this device was carried out with six operational modes for reject water from sewage treatment plant. Experimental conditions used were 16.7, 33.3, 41.7 and 50.0 ton/day of flow rate and 2~4 of Al/P molar ratio. By injection of coagulant in each operational mode, the high removal efficiencies of SS and T-P were obtained, but continuous operation time was decreased to 7.8~11.4 min in most modes. However, when the Mode 5 of the developed filtration device was applied, the continuous operation time was maintained up to 88.2 min. Also, it was found that the continuous operation time in the Mode 5 using the developed system was increased from 8 to 11.3 times longer than those in other modes. Backwashing flow rate was also very low at 5.4% of total filtered water. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Mode 5 of the developed filtration system was the most efficient treatment method for the removal of high concentrations of SS and T-P.

  • This work presents experimental results on vibration control of flexible structures using the squeeze mode electrorheological(ER) mount. An appropriate size of the squeeze mode ER mount is devised and its field-dependent damping force characteristics are experimentally evaluated. The ER mount is then applied to two different flexible structures : beam structure and frame structure. An optimal controller associated with displacement and acceleration signals is designed to suppress the imposed vibration and experimentally realized using the microprocessor. Vibration control responses of the flexible structures such as acceleration are evaluated in time and frequency domains.

  • In this work, a new type speaker which features various resonant frequencies is proposed utilizing a magneto-rheological (MR) fluid and its performance is evaluated in terms of the change of the field-dependent sound pressure level. In order to achieve this goal, a whole concept of the speaker system is firstly discussed and subsequently a controllable diaphragm is made using MR fluid whose rheological properties such as viscosity are controllable by the magnitude of magnetic field. Then, the proposed speaker system consisting of the inner structure and the squeeze mode type of MR diaphragm is established in an anechoic room The effectiveness of the proposed speaker system is experimentally evaluated at two different conditions; with and without the magnetic field. It is shown from experimental tests that the sound pressure level at different sound source can be controlled which is not able to achieve using one conventional speaker system.

  • 4WD technology is being actively applied to passenger cars. Therefore, dry multi-plate clutches are used for transfer cases. On the other hand, dry clutches have problems related to large vibrations and poor ride quality. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a multi-plate clutch with an MR fluid. When fastening the multi-plate clutch in the transfer case, the proposed MR clutch was applied to reduce the shock and friction, which is a key component in a four-wheel-drive system. MR multi-plate clutch has a fluid coupling mode and a compression mode. A torque model equation was derived for the optimal design. The analysis was performed using Ansys Maxwell to optimize the design parameters of the multi-plate clutch. Electromagnetic field analysis confirmed the strength of the magnetic field when the number of disks and plates were changed, and the maximum strength of the magnetic field was 0.45 Tesla. By applying this to the torque equation, the spacing between the plates was 2 mm, and the inner and outer diameters of the plates were selected to be 45 mm and 55 mm, respectively. Overall, this paper proposes an optimal design technique to maximize the performance of an MR multi-plate clutch.
