Long-term Settlement of the Reclaimed Quasi-overconsolidated Clay Deposits (유사과압밀 준설매립지반의 장기압밀침하)

  • Structures are frequently built on a dredged clay layer overlaid by a soft marine clay deposit in coastal areas of Korea. Large consolidation settlement usually occurs in the case and this may cause damages of super-structures. So, the evaluation of long-term consolidation settlement is very important in design and construction. Therefore, in this study, a long-term consolidation characteristics of marine dredged clays are investigated. Firstly, the relationship of $C_{\alpha}/C_c$ on marine dredged clays near Gwang-yang Port was evaluated. Secondly, long-term consolidation characteristics of the pseudo-preconsolidated ground were evaluated.

A Study on Consolidation Settlement Calculation of Cutting Soft Clay as Fill Material (절취 연약점성토의 성토재 활용에 따른 압밀침하량 산정에 관한 연구)

  • In the case of creating a site in the reclaimed land (public waters), due to the nature of the coastal sedimentary ground, large-scale construction materials are required, It is necessary to utilize soft clay, which is inevitably generated during construction of the complex, as a fill material in terms of resource recycling and economic aspects (reducing the amount of embankment required). In this study, changes in the consolidation characteristics of cut-out disturbed soft clay due to the recycling of soft clay soil were identified, and a consolidation settlement design plan was proposed. Through the results of the consolidation test of the study site, the change in consolidation characteristics (compression index reduction, precede load uncountable) due to disturbance (cutting) was confirmed, the method of calculating (consolidation settlement) the filling clay layer as the composite target layer (consolidation target layer, loading load layer) was analyzed as a result consistent with the actual behavior.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the consolidation characteristics of waste landfill from sodium carbonate production. The waste lime is a byproduct from the production of soda ash. The consolidation settlement of waste lime landfill was determined for waste lime specimen which obtained from the field boring. The consolidation tests are conducted for determination of the primary and secondary consolidation settlements. The waste lime is classified as an organic soil with high plasticity. As a result of an organic content test, the contents of organic matter in waste lime is much higher than that of normal clay. Finally, the total consolidation settlement of waste lime landfill is calculated by using a theoretical method and computer program for the given initial void ratio, compression index, and embankment height.

Behavior of Soft Ground Improved by Weight of Embankment (단계 성토 하중에 의한 개량된 연약지반의 거동 분석)

  • 본 연구에서는 점토층의 자중압밀을 시행하여 현장강도를 구현하기 위하여 1/70로 축소 모델링하여 원심모형실험을 수행하였으며, 점토구간에 PBD 타설시의 연약지반의 압밀침하거동을 분석하기 위하여서는 1/100로 축소모델링하여 원심모형실험과 전산해석을 실시하였다. 전산해석결과 성토체중심아래의 점토지반의 침하량은 1단계 성토제방하중 하에서 4.8개월 경과 후 최대 침하량은 41.1cm, 2단계 성토하중에서 4.2개월 경과 후의 최대침하량은 78.8, 3단계 성토하중에서 6개월 경과후의 침하량은 93.5cm의 침하가 발생하는 것으로 나타나 수치해석 결과와 원심모형실험결과 값의 유사한 경향을 확인하였다.

  • To investigate the effect of drainage spacing and smear on the rate of consolidation and the efficiency of vertical drain method, a series of consolidation tests with a large consolidation chamber and special equipment for inserting mandrels were conducted. As the smeared region increases, total settlement in over-consolidated clay increases whereas apparent change in settlement does not appear in normally consolidated clay. Vertical drain generally accelerates the rate of consolidation, while it could also deteriorate the efficiency of vertical drain method even for the decreasing drainage length and spacing ratio.

  • Stone columns is ground improvement method which is composed of compacted gravel or crushed stone inserted into the soft ground consisting of loose sand and clay by replacement method. Generally stone columns are constructed in silty clay, above 70% replacement rate for increasing the bearing capacity and shear strength. Low replacement stone columns method is limited below 30% at replacement rate-premising strength increase of clay ground is estimated efficiently. This study, laboratory model tests were conducted to investigate the consolidation drainage promotion and shear strength increase effect in soft ground with replacement rate by stone columns. The settlement reduction effect and settlement reduction coefficients increase with increasing the replacement rate in composite ground. The results of model tests indicate that consolidation promotion effect is proved. The increasing strength of composite ground was verified by vane shear tests.

  • Accurate prediction of future settlement is essential for the settlement control of soft soil by pre-loading method. To predict future settlement in clayey soft soils, several methods like Asaoka method, Hyperbolic Method and Hoshino method are currently being used. These methods predict the future sett1ement by mathmatical treatment of the measured settlement data on the basis of consolidtion theory and empiricism. But the correlation coefficient between the measured and the predicted settlement was relatively low (0.8~0.9). Also, the prediction of future settlemet for the design load is very difficult. In this article, the measured field settlement data was treated as the the field consolidation test. Hence, condolidation coefficient(Cv) and compression index(Cc) was evaluated from the field settlement data. Cv and Cc values from field data was used to calculate the degree of consolidation and settlement at desired time. By this method, the correlation coefficent between the measured and the predicted settlement was significantly increased(0.97~0.99). Also the settlement by the design load after the improvement of soft soil could be predicted reasonably. This method is quite rational and sound but it requires thousands of calculation steps. Today, by the aid of low priced personal computers above mentioned technique could be used much acre economically and effectively than conventional methods. This article presented the mechanisms and capacities of this method and demonstrated the enhanced correlation coefficient when applied to actual field settlement data.

  • The installation of soft ground instruments and the performance of measurement and management of the measurement shall be carried out in order to ensure the safety of the construction work and to improve the quality of the construction work. The purpose of the pressure density deposition calculation is to determine the stability of the foundation ground and the formulation by measuring and calculating the density conditions generated on the soil through the period of neglect after completion of the soil at each stage. In practice, it is judged that the analysis by the hyperbolic method can be applied to the safety side.
