  • Purpose : The p53 tumor suppressor gene is one of the most frequently altered genes in human malignancies. We try to explore the implication of p53 alteration in Ewing's sarcoma. Materials and Methods : We analyzed 35 paraffin blocks to explore the deletion and sequence alterations of p53. Results : Quantitative PCR analysis showed that 2 tumors showed a homozygous deletion of the gene. Mutational analysis of exons 4 to 9 of p53 by PCR-SSCP revealed that 3 tumors carry sequence alterations in exons 5 or 8, and DNA sequencing analysis identified missense point mutations. Conclusion : Taken together, our data demonstrate that p53 is genetically altered in a small fraction of Ewing's sarcoma.

  • Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS) is an inherited autosomal-dominant tumor-predisposition disorder caused by germline mutations in the TP53 tumor suppressor gene. Since patients with LFS are likely to develop therapy-related cancers, radiation therapy should be avoided if breast cancer is found in these individuals. Herein, we present a case of secondary breast cancer in an LFS patient after radiation and chemotherapy for the first diagnosed breast sarcoma.

  • Male breast cancer is rare, accounting for approximately 1% of breast cancers. Metastasis from extra-mammary malignancy to the breast in men is extremely rare. The most common primary tumors that metastasize to the breast in male are prostate, lung, stomach, colorectal cancer, melanoma, and sarcoma. To our knowledge, only a few cases of bladder cancer presenting with metastasis to the male breast have been reported, and metastasis with infiltration rather than mass is extremely rare. We report imaging findings on mammography and ultrasonography in a 59-year-old male with bladder cancer metastatic to the breast.

  • Primary leiomyosarcoma of the mediastinum is an extremely rare tumor that develops either in the mesenchymal cells of the visceral mediastinum or in the smooth muscle of the great vessels. In the literature, the most significant factor for determining survival is the ability to completely resect the tumor. But there is 30~64% recurrence rate and there is also a lack of data for the role of adjuvant therapy after complete resection. We report here on a case of recurred leiomyosarcoma of the mediastinum that was surgically removed via left thoracotomy 2 years previously and this was misdiagmosed as benign disease.

  • Carcinosarcoma of gallbladder is a rare malignant tumor characterized by malignant epithelial and malignant mesenchymal components. Its pathogenesis is unknown and most of carcinosarcomas of gallbladder are associated with poor survival because the disease presents at an advanced stage. A 69-year-old man presented with right upper quadrant pain. The preoperative diagnosis was gallbladder cancer, and thus, curative radical cholecystectomy was performed. Pathologic examination of the surgical specimen revealed that the tumor was composed of carcinomatous components with adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, and sarcomatous components with spindle cell sarcoma and chondrosarcoma, which was consistent with a diagnosis of primary carcinosarcoma of the gallbladder. The tumor was found to extend to the pericholecystic fat and no metastasis in regional lymph nodes.

  • A 45-year-old male was admitted to Department of Thoracic Surgery, Korea University Hospital with the chief complaints of cough and high fever of two months duration. His chest roentgenogram revealed homogenous ill-defined increased density in right lower lung, and bronchogram showed the abrupt cut-off sign of the proximal portion of the right intermediate bronchus. Preoperative evaluation of this patient revealed no contraindication of the pulmonary surgery. So Radical Right pneumonectomy was performed under the preoperative impression of lung cancer. And post-operative course was uneventful. Pathologic examination of the resected lung revealed Carcinosarcoma without regional lymphnode metastasis.

  • Carcinosarcoma of the lung is a rare turner with an admixture of malignant epithelial(carcinomatous) and malignant mesenchymal (sarcomatous) components. Clinicopathologically, pulmonary carcinosarcoma has been divided into two types by its anatomical locations and growth nature, peripheral parenchymal and central endobronchial variants. We experienced an endobronchial carcinosarcoma that induced complete atelectasis of the right lung due to polypoid growing mass from the right upper lobe bronchus in a 67 year old male smoker. The patient underwent a successful right pneumonectomy. The tumor was composed of squamous cell carcinoma with variable sarcomatous differentiation into myogenous and undifferenciated sarcoma that demonstrated by immunohistochemical study. The patient has been doing well for the last seven months since the operation, without metastases or turner recurrence.

  • We report herein a 46-year-old woman who presented with mucinous breast carcinoma that appeared as a coarse and densely calcified mass on mammography. The lesion was a 4.6-cm-sized palpable, hyperechoic, calcified mass with posterior shadowing on ultrasonography. This finding is a unique feature of mucinous breast carcinoma and is also observed in unusual breast cancer variants such as metaplastic breast cancer with chondroid differentiation, extraosseous osteosarcoma, and breast chondrosarcoma. The lesion showed a slow-growing pattern throughout the 4-year observation period. Mammography performed 4 years ago revealed faint, grouped microcalcifications; the lesion increased in size over 2 years, presenting as a well-circumscribed, calcified mass, mimicking dystrophic calcification. As several unusual variants of breast cancer, including mucinous carcinoma, may present as coarse and densely calcified masses on mammography, immediate biopsy should be considered when they are observed.

  • Antitumor activities of tannin extract and chloroform fraction extract from the persimmon leaves, and 2, 4-decadienal identified as an antimutagenic compound in persimmon leaves were examined in sarcoma 180 implanted tumor in mice by using both light and transmission electron microscopes. Among them, tannin extracted from the persimmon leaves delayed the progression of malignant tumor but the other two did not show any noticeable effect. The antitumorigenic activity of tannin extract might not come from the selective cytotoxicity against tumor cells, but might be, in an anaerobic environment, from the inhibitory action against oncogenic protein synthesis or from the proteolysis of the preformed oncogenic proteins by autophagocytic granules. therefore, the tannin from persimmon leaves might protect cells from fast progression of malignant tumorigensis.
