The stability of rock slopes is closely related to the factors such as: type of rock, development of geological structures, weathering, characteristics of rock, and the shape of the geological features. When we design the rock slope, the slope stability is determined by the discontinuity causing the circular, plane or wedge failure. The failure happens when the slope is under the unstable geological condition. But in some cases, slope failure has occurred even though the slope is under stable geological conditions. In this respect, this paper presents the plane failure conditions for domestic rock slopes through research of sites where slope failure has occurred regardless of whether or not it satisfied the stable geological conditions.
Though the stability analysis of soil slopes widely employs the limit equilibrium method, the study on the jointed rock slopes must consider the direction of joint and the characteristics of Joint at the same time. This study analyzes the result of the change in the factors which show the characteristics of discontinuity and the shape factor of rock slopes, and so on, in an attempt to validate the propriety as to the interpretation of jointed rock slope stability which uses the general finite element program. First, the difference depending on the flow rules was compared, and the factor effect study was conducted. The selected independent variables included the direction of joint which displays the mechanical characteristics of discontinuity, adhesive cohesion, friction angle, the inclination and height of rock slope which reveal the shape of slope and surcharge load. And the horizontal displacement was numerically interpreted at the 1/3 point below the slope, a dependent variable, to compare the relative degree of factor effects. The findings of study on factor effects led to the validation that the result of horizontal displacement for each factor satisfied various engineering characteristics, making it possible to be applied to stability interpretation of jointed rock slope. A modelling is possible, which considers the application of the result of real geotechnical surveys & laboratory studies and the non-linear characteristics when designing the rock slope. In addition, the stress change which may result from the natural disaster, such as precipitation, and the construction, can be expressed. Furthermore, as the complicated rock condition and the ground supporting effect can be considered through FEM, it is considered to be very useful in making an engineering decision on the cut-slope, reinforcement and so on.
Rock mass classification systems such as RMR and Q system have been widely served as a simple empirical approach for the design of various rock mass structures in the stage of site survey as well as under the construction. For the RQD determination, the boring is partially carried out and what is more, the survey boring is not normally carried out under construction. Therefore RQD is frequently determined by empirical method or indirect method. Since it is difficult to determine the discontinuity characteristics such as RQD, spacing, persistence, filling and so on, it is essential to develop suitable and simple systems without drilled core and a cert 없 n number of representative parameters. One of the primary objectives of the classification systems for a practicing engineer has been to make it simple to use as a preliminary design tool for the structures in rock mass. In the present study, the modifications for both the RMR and GSI system are suggested by authors to introduce new classification system as well as to improve the scope of some of the existing classification systems for a practicing engineer.

In construction of a structure in underground space, in-situ stress in rock mass has great effect on the stability of the structure. Especially, the direction and magnitude of rock stress have influence on the excavation method, the choice of support and reinforcement method for establishing the stability of tunnel. Therefore, it is very important to consider the characteristics of in-situ stress in rock mass for tunnel stability analysis. In this study, a reasonable design method for underground structure was reviewed through the case study for tunnel design considering in-situ rock stress. For this purpose, the estimation for SRF (Stress Reduction Factor) as input parameter in rock classification using Q-System and the assesment for tunnel support were studied. Also, considering the characteristics of in-situ rock stress such as the magnitude of K and the direction of principal stress, the parameter studies for tunnel stability analysis were carried out. An improved method was proposed for obtaining the better results in the tunnel stability analysis.
The domestic design method for the shaft resistance of drilled shafts into a bedrock is based on the empirical method, where the uniaxial compressive strength of rock specimen is utilized for calculation of the shaft resistance. This method has uncertainties in prediction of capacity of drilled shafts and result in uneconomic engineering design. Recently a new improved design method was suggested, which reflects important factors that affect the strength of pile sockets. Socket roughness is one of the significant factors influencing the shaft resistance of drilled shaft socketed into rock. In this paper roughness information for the shaft resistance design of socket pile was suggested on the basis of statistical analysis of data measured from wall surface in the bore holes of drilled shafts.

On the basis of flow resistance theory the conceptual model and related mathematical descriptions is proposed for resistance modeling of groundwater flow in CPM(continuum Porous medium), DFN(discrete fracture network) and fractured-porous medium. The proposed model is developed on the basis of finite volume method assuming steady-state, constant density groundwater flow. The basic approach of the method is to evaluate inter-block flow resistance values for a staggered grid arrangement, i.e. fluxes are stored at cell walls and scalars at cell centers. The balance of forces, i.e. the Darcy law, is utilized for each control volume centered around the point where the velocity component is stored. The transmissivity (or permeability) at the interface is assumed to be the harmonic average of neighboring blocks. Flow resistance theory was utilized to relate the fluxes between the grid blocks with residual pressures. The flow within porous medium is described by three dimensional equations and that within an individual fracture is described by a two dimensional equivalent of the flow equations for a porous medium. Newly proposed models would contribute to develop flow simulation techniques with various matrix characteristics.

Since early in the 90's, the need for construction of underground rock structures such as long and large section traffic tunnel, energy storage cavern, industrial facility, etc. has been largely increased because the Korean territory is not wide and about 65 % of the land consists of mountainous region. The initial rock stress measurement has been widely conducted to provide the quantitative information on the stress state of engineering site at the design stage of underground rock structures. Among the diverse methods developed for measuring rock stress, hydraulic fracturing test is most popularly used because it is applicable at pre-construction stage and has no limit in testing depth. In this paper, the characteristics of initial rock stress state in mountainous region were studied on the basis of the in-situ hydraulic fracturing stress measurement results from the 60 test boreholes in various parts of Korea.

Mechanized tunnelling by TBMs has been extensively adopted for last two decades. Nevertheless, only few case histories have been reported. Unlike NATM tunnels, the case histories of the weak zone have been seldom reported for the mechanized tunnelling, even in the other countries. In this study, a collapse of TBM tunnel occurred in the severely altered weak rock zones between volcaniclastic rocks and granitic rocks was briefly described. A systematic geotechnical investigation, which was performed to examine the cause of the collapse, was carried out at the site and then characteristics of the rocks in the zones were evaluated. Moreover, This study propose a guide line of estimateing the possibility of collapse in TBM tunnels through comparing experimental results with surveying results of general rocks.
In situ rock mass is generally heterogeneous and discontinuous, with varying degrees of strength along the planes of weakness. The planes of weakness such as joints, faults, cracks and bedding planes, control the strength and deformation characteristics of the rock mass. Subsequently, the stability of underground opening depends upon the spatial distribution of discontinuities and their mechanical properties in relation with geometrical shape of openins as well as the mechanical properties of intact rock materials. Understanding the behaviour of a discontinuous rock mass remains a key issue for improving excavation design in hiかy stressed environments. Although recent advances in rock mechanics have provided guidelines for the design of underground opening in isotropic rock mass, prediction and control of deformation in discontinuous rock masses are still unclear. In this study, parametric study was performed to investigate the plastic zone size, stress distribution and deformation behavior around underground opening in a discontinuous rock mass using a continuum joint model. The solutions were obtained by an elasto-plastic finite difference analysis, employing the Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria. Non-associated flow rule and perfectly plastic material behavior are also assumed.
Characterizations of Excavation Damage Zone (EDZ), which is hydro-mechanical degrading the host rock, are the important issues on the geological repository for the spent nuclear fuel. In the DECOVALEX 2019 project, Task G aimed to model the fractured rock numerically, describe the hydro-mechanical behavior of EDZ, and predict the change of the hydraulic factor during the lifetime of the geological repository. Task G prepared two-dimensional fractured rock model to compare the characteristics of each simulation tools in Work Package 1, validated the extended three-dimensional model using the TAS04 in-situ interference tests from Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory in Work Package 2, and applied the thermal and glacial loads to monitor the long-term hydro-mechanical response on the fractured rock in Work Package 3. Each modelling team adopted both Finite Element Method (FEM) and Discrete Element Method (DEM) to simulate the hydro-mechanical behavior of the fracture rock, and added the various approaches to describe the EDZ and fracture geometry which are appropriate to each simulation method. Therefore, this research can introduce a variety of numerical approaches and considerations to model the geological repository for the spent nuclear fuel in the crystalline fractured rock.
