  • This paper intended to assess the hydro-structure characteristics of volcanic rocks based on the hydrogeological data obtained from the underground storage cavern during construction. The variation of groundwater levels was periodically measured from the 28 surface monitoring holes(NX size) and the hydraulic pressures and injection rates were daily monitored from the water curtain holes(95 horizontal holes and 63 vertical holes). The hydraulic interference tests were performed in whole water curtain holes. The distribution patterns of hydraulic pressure are closely related to the dip angles of fracture intersected to the water curtain holes. Three domains can be grouped by the distribution of hydraulic pressures in the horizontal water curtain holes. The initial hydraulic pressures measured immediately after drilling of water crutain holes are high in ascending order of the cavern C-2, C-1, and C-3. The priliminary hydrochemical data also indicate that the portions of the deep groundwater composition is relatively great in the cavern C-3 area. Some of the horizontal water curtain holes in the cavern C-3 show a steady higher groundwater pressure with the composition of shallow groundwater indicating the outer boundary as constant hydraulic boundary. The water curtain holes in the cavern C-2 is characterized as low initial hydraulic pressure and less injection rates, suggesting poor hydraulic connectivity to a shallow groundwater system. The results of the study can help to understand a hydraulic compartment concept in a fracture hydro-geology and be utilized during the surface investigation for a groundwater system.

  • Sprayable waterproofing membrane has been considered as a substitute for a sheet waterproofing membrane in a variety of underground excavation works. However, fundamental properties of sprayble waterproofing membrane have not been fully given yet. In this study, a new two-component sprayable waterproofing membrane prototype was developed. In addition, its physico-mechanical properties were measured and compared with those of two kinds of thin spray-on liners where constitutive materials and construction methods are very close to each other. From direct tensile tests, the sprayable waterproofing membrane with elongations at break between 250% and 300% showed much higher ductility than TSLs. However, the sprayable waterproofing membrane had a limitation as a support member since its bond strength and loading capacity was lower than those of TSLs. From three-dimensional X-ray CT images, the porosity of the sprayable waterproofing membrane was estimated to be 26.13%. However, most of pores which might have been generated during membrane curing were not observed to be interconnected but isolated.

  • HLW (High Level Radioactive Waste) is one of the problems that must be solved in the countries that implement nuclear power generation. Most countries that are concerned about HLW treatment are considering complete isolation from human society by disposing them deep underground. For perfect isolation, understanding the characteristics of underground rocks is very important. In particular, understanding the characteristics of discontinuity as a path way is one of the first things in order to predict the movement of exposed nuclear species to the surface. In this study, we used 500m underground core samples obtained from granite and gneiss area. The purpose of this study is to understand the characteristics of the discontinuities in each rock type and to analyze the properties of the joints in the underground relative to the surrounding environment. For this purpose, the types of discontinuities were classified and the distribution of each discontinuity were analyzed through visual analysis of the each sample obtained at 500m underground. This study can be used as a basic data for understanding the properties of discontinuities in the rock of the survey area and it can be also used as an important data for understanding the distribution characteristics of discontinuities according to the rock types.

  • Damage characteristics of granite, marble and sandstone whose properties were different were investigated by uniaxial compression test and cyclic loading-unloading test. Strength, elastic constants and damage threshold stresses were measured by uniaxial compression test and were compared with those measured by cyclic loading-unloading test. Average rock strengths measured by cyclic loading-unloading test were either lower than or similar with those measured by uniaxial compression test. Rocks with high strength and low porosity were more sensitive to fatigue than that with low strength and high porosity. Although permanent strains caused by cyclic loading-unloading were different according to rock types, they could be good indicators representing damage characteristics of rock. Damage threshold stress of granite and marble might be measured from stress-permanent strain curves. Acoustic emissions were measured during both tests and felicity ratios which represented damage characteristics of rocks were calculated. Felicity ratio of sandstone which was weak in strength and highly porous could not be calculated because of very few measurements of acoustic emissions. On the other hand, damage threshold could be predicted from felicity ratios of granite and marble which were brittle and low in porosity. The deformation behaviors and damage characteristics of rock mass could be investigated if additional tests for various rock types were performed.

  • This paper describes the comparative results of measured and predicted values for the horizontal displacement of earth retaining wall based on two field cases, In order to examine the application of lateral earth pressure to the earth retaining wall considering the typical ground characteristics (clinker layer) in Jeju. The prediction of the lateral earth pressure causing the horizontal displacement of the retaining wall was performed by elasto-plastic analysis using Rankine earth pressure, Terzaghi & Peck modified lateral earth pressure, and Tschebotarioff lateral earth pressure. As a result, it was confirmed that the maximum horizontal displacement predicted at site A was about 5 times larger than the measured value, and the ground with maximum horizontal displacement occurred by the prediction was found to be the clinker layer. In the case of site B, the predicted value was 4 to 7 times larger than the measured value. In addition, the ground with maximum horizontal displacement and the tendency of horizontal displacement were very different depending on the prediction method. This means that research on lateral earth pressure that can consider regional characteristics needs to be continued, because it is due to the multi-layered ground characteristics of the Jeju area in which bedrock layers and clinker layers are alternately distributed,

  • The anisotropic behavior of rocks is primarily attributed to the directional arrangement of rock-forming minerals and the distribution characteristics of microcracks. Notably, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks often exhibit distinct transverse isotropy in terms of their strength and deformation characteristics. Consequently, it is crucial to gain accurate insights into the deformation and failure characteristics of transversely isotropic rocks during rock mechanics design processes. The deformation of such rocks is described by five independent elastic constants, which are determined through laboratory testing. In this study, the characteristics of the directional variation of apparent elastic constants in transversely isotropic rocks were investigated using experimental data reported in the literature. To achieve this, the constitutive equation proposed by Mehrabadi & Cowin was introduced to calculate the apparent elastic constants more efficiently and systematically in a rotated Cartesian coordinate system. Four transversely isotropic rock types from the literature were selected, and the influence of changes in the orientation of the weak plane on the variations of the apparent elastic modulus, apparent shear modulus, and apparent Poisson's ratio was analyzed. Based on the investigation, a new constraint on the elastic constants has been proposed. If the proposed constraint is satisfied, the directional variation of the apparent elastic constants in transversely isotropic rocks aligns with intuitive predictions of their tendencies.

  • Spillway and discharge channel of reservoirs require the Control of Large volume of water under high pressure. The energies at the downstream end of spillway or discharge channel are tremendous. Therefore, Some means of expending the energy of the high-velocity flow is required to prevent scour of the riverbed, minimize erosion, and prevent undermining structures or dam it self. This may be accomplished by Constructing an energy dissipator at the downstream end of spillway or discharge channel disigned to dissipated the excessive energy and establish safe flow Condition in the outlet channel. There are many types of energy dissipators, stilling basins are the most familar energy dissipator. In the stilling basin, most energies are dissipated by hydraulic jump. stilling basins have some length to cover hydraulic jump length. So stilling basins require much concrete works and high construction cost. Flip bucket type energy dissipators require less construction cost. If the streambed is composed of firm rock and it is certain that the scour will not progress upstream to the extent that the safety of the structure might be endangered, flip backet type energy dissipators are the most recommendable one. Following items are tested and studied with bucket radius, $R=7h_2$,(medium of $4h_2{\geqq}R{\geqq}10h_2$). 1. Allowable upstream channel slop of bucket. 2. Adequate bucket lip angle for good performance of flip bucket. Also followings are reviwed. 1. Scour by jet flow. 2. Negative pressure distribution and air movement below nappe flow. From the test and study, following results were obtained. 1. Upstream channel slope of bucket (S=H/L) should be 0.25<H/L<0.75 for good performance of flip bucket. 2. Adequated lip angle $30^{\circ}{\sim}40^{\circ}$ are more reliable than $20^{\circ}{\sim}30^{\circ}$ for the safety of structures.

  • For the purpose of determining the thickness of concrete lining and detect of the cavity where may be located behind tunnel lining, IE (Impact-Echo) method it effectively useful in the tunnel safety diagnosis and the quality control during the construction. As a part of case study, we applied IE method to various tunnel structure types such as road tunnel and subway tunnel constructed by NATM (New Austrian Tunnelling Method) and ASSM (American Steel Support Method). As tunnel specifications estimated from this method were compared with coring data, design drawing and other survey results, it was very good agreement with each other. In conclusion, we verified that IE method shows an accurate and reliable result. The conventional interpretation of IE method in frequency domain gives only vertical information at a certain point. However, the interpretation using time-frequency analysis and depth section imaging technique from two dimensional profiling surveys can show more reliable information about structure inside.

  • In this "Wonju~Jaecheon double-lanes railroad" project, a highway is located at about 13meter above a tunnel. Initially, rock-splitting method was used for the tunnel excavation in order to minimize the possible damage on the highway. The method, however, takes a long time for the tunnel excavation and that may cause other problems like large displacement of tunnel and subsidence of highway ground before the tunnel can be stabilized by supporters. Therefore, the application of electronic blasting method(eDdevII) was recommended to control the blast vibration below 1.0cm/sec as well as to prevent the subsidence of highway ground. The analysis of the influence of tunnel excavation on the highway showed that electric blasting method is permissible for the safe management of the highway. Based on that, the tunnel construction under a highway could be carried out quickly and safely without any damages on the highway.
