A Study on the Characteristics of Tunnel Based on the Rock Mass Classification (암반분류법에 근거한 터널 특성 연구)

  • A tunnel that uses the RMR method or the Q-system is called a 'modem tunnel' because the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) is not employed, even though shotcrete and rock bolts are used as support. It is known that the modem tunnel, which is supported by shotcrete, is basically different from the conventional tunnel, which is supported by steel ribs. In order to preserve the load-carrying capacity of the rock mass, loosening and excessive rock deformations must be minimized. Although it is known that this can be achieved by applying shotcrete in the case of the modem tunnel, this has not been clearly demonstrated. In order to inspect the distinctions between the conventional tunnel and the modern tunnel, their support characteristics and the rock loads of the rock mass classifications are compared. Terzaghi's rock load classification was used as the conventional tunnel's representative rock mass classification. The RMR method and the Q-system were adopted as the modem tunnel's representative rock mass classification. The study's results show that the load-carrying capacity of shotcrete, when used as the main support in the modern tunnel, is greater than the load-capacity of the steel ribs used in the conventional tunnel. Because it has been verified that the rock loads of their rock mass classifications are not different, then, according to the rock mass classifications, the load-carrying capacity of the rock mass of the modern tunnel, which uses shotcrete, is not greater than that of the conventional tunnel.

Investigation of Excavation Disturbed Zone Around a Tunnel by Blasting (발파에 의한 터널주변 암반 손상대 발생 평가)

  • In situ and laboratory tests were carried out for investigating the Excavation Disturbed Zone(EDZ) generated from blasting at the KAERI Underground Research Tunnel(KURT), which is for the researches related to High-level radioactive waste disposal program. It was found that the EDZ was generated more than In from the laboratory rock tests and in situ experiments. RQD of the rock mass within $0{\sim}2(m)$, where the blasting impact was significant, was 17% lower than in the deeper zones without a serious blasting impact. It was also estimated that the deformability of rock mass was reduced about 40% after the blasting.

Side Resistance of Rock Socketed Drilled Shafts in Consideration of the Shaft Size Effects (크기효과를 고려한 암반에 근입된 현장타설말뚝의 주면마찰력)

  • According to Sagong and Paik (2003), the side resistance of rock socketed drilled shafts is affected by rock quality, types, uniaxial compressive strength, and confining stress. Their approach based upon the Hoek-Brown criterion provides reasonable predictions of the side resistance. In this study, we propose an equation to calculate the side resistance considering size effects of the shafts and investigate the influence of drilled shaft diameter on the side resistance. A new method employs the modified Hoek-Brown criterion together with an empirical size effect of rock core. From the previous field tests, 12 pile load test results were collected and compared with prediction calculated from the equation proposed in this study. In a given condition, similar results between measurement and estimate are observed. From the parametric study on the GSI, confining stress, uniaxial compressive of intact rock and pile size, it is shown that uniaxial compressive strength is the most influential parameter on the side resistance. Though pile size shows the least influence on the resistance, the size effect is apparent as rock quality increases.

Experimental Study on Deformation and Failure Behavior of Limestones under Dynamic Loadings (동적하중 하에서 석회암의 변형 및 파괴거동에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Information on the deformation behavior and fracture strength of rocks subjected to dynamic loadings is important to stability analyses of underground openings underground vibration due to rock blasts, earthquakes and rock bursts. In this study, Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) system was applied to estimate dynamic compressive and tensile fracture strengths of limestone and also examine deformation behavior of limestones under dynamic loadings. A micro-focus X-ray CT scanner was used to observe non-destructively inside the impacted limestone specimens. From the dynamic tests, it was revealed that the limestone have over 140MPa dynamic compressive strength and the strain-rate dependency of the strength. Dynamic Brazilian tensile strength of the limestone exceeds 21MPa and shows over 3 times static Brazilian tensile strength.

A Study for the Stability Investigation of Three Parallel Tunnels Using Scaled Model Tests (삼병렬 터널의 안정성 검토를 위한 모형실험 연구)

  • In this study, scaled model tests were performed to investigate the stability of three parallel tunnels. Seven types of test models which had respectively different pillar widths, tunnel sectional shapes, support conditions and ground conditions were experimented, where crack initiating pressures and deformation behaviors around tunnels were investigated. In order to evaluate the effect of pillar widths on stability, various models were experimented. As results, the models with shallower pillar widths proved to be unstable because of lower crack initiating pressures and more tunnel convergences than the models with thicker pillar widths. In order to find the effect of tunnel sectional shape on stability, the models with arched, semi-arched and rectangular tunnels were experimented. Among them rectangular tunnel model was the most unstable, where the arched tunnel model with small radius of roof curvature was more stable than semi-arched one. The model with rockbolt showed higher crack initiating pressure and less roof lowering than the unsupported model. The deformation behaviors of tunnels in the anisotropic ground model were quite different from those in the isotropic ground model. Futhermore, the results of FLAC analysis were qualitatively coincident with the experimental results.

  • Concentrated stresses due to the underground tunnel excavation easily cause many problems such as yielding, popping, and failure at the immediate roof, wall and floor of tunnel. Therefore, it is very important to predict the possibility of these problems when a tunnel is excavated underground. There are two typical methods to predict these problems. The one is to predict problems from the analysis of field monitoring data and the other is to predict them from computer simulations using good site investment data. Using the second method, this study attempted to describe the time-dependent or progressive manner of immediate roof and wall due to the underground tunnel excavation. An iterative technique was used to represent progressive failure of rockmass with the Hoek and Brown theory. By developing and simulating three different shapes of twin tunnels, this research estimated the proper size of critical pillar width between tunnels, distributed stresses on the tunnel walls, and convergences of tunnel crowns. Moreover, results out of progressive failure technique based on the Hoek and Brown theory were compared with the results out of Mohr-Coulomb theory.

  • This study aims to suggest the detailed evaluation criteria based on performances for rock slopes. Using the previous research result, final evaluation items are proposed considering characteristics and similarities of each evaluation item. Weight for each evaluation item is deducted using AHP method, verification for suggested evaluation criteria is conducted based on correlation analysis. The research results as follows. All evaluation items have a high statistical correlation with final evaluation result(safety rating). Especially, items of the "rockfall", "ground deformation", "discontinuity characteristic", "instable lithology" were shown the highest in relative correlation coefficient(R), It is judged that items and weight presented in this study well reflect characteristics of rock slopes.

  • In this paper the Hoek-Brown (HB) failure criterion is integrated into the Holmquist-Johnson-Cook (HJC) concrete material model to reflect the inherent characteristics of field rock masses in LS-DYNA blast modeling. This is intended to emphasize the distinctive characteristics of field rock masses that usually have many geological discontinuities. The replacement is made only for the static strength part of the HJC material model by using a statistical curve fitting technique, and its procedure is described in detail. An example is also given to illustrate the use of the obtained HJC material model. Computation is performed for a plane strain model of a single-hole blasting on a field limestone by using the combination of the fluid-structure interaction (FSI) technique and the multi-material arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (MMALE) method in LS-DYNA.

  • In this study, the applicability of underground displacement sensors was considered through rock blasting tests to develop a relatively inexpensive and efficient slope failure prediction system that can quickly detect the risk of slope failure in advance and issue predictions and warnings with accurate judgment. In the blasting experiment, the sensor located close to the blasting source showed a large displacement due to crushing inside the rock and the sensor located away from the blasting source showed a relatively small strain. This study confirmed that the wired and wireless type underground displacement sensor system can be applied to measure the behavior of the rock slope, and it can be used as a basic data for establishing an early warning system to predict slope failure.

A Study of Rockbursts Within a Deep Mountain TBM Tunnel (산악 TBM 터널에서 발생한 암반파열 현상에 대한 연구)

  • Rockbursts are mainly caused by a sudden release or the stored strain energy in the rock mass. They have been the major hazard in deep hard rock mines but rarely occur in tunnels. Due to the short history and limited information on rockbursts, the topic has rarely been studied in Korea. Some cases of rockbursts, however, have been reported during construction of a mountain tunnel for waterway. This study focuses on analyzing data on rockbursts obtained from a TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) tunnel and suggests methods for a comprehensive understanding on rockbursts. From the analysis of the field data of rockbursts, it was found that most rockbursts mainly occurred at the section between the tunnel face and the TBM operating room, and the rock bursting phenomena lasted up to 20 days after excavation in certain areas. The data also show that the bursting spots are located all around the tunnel surface including the face, the wall, and the roof, The maximum size of bursting spots is usually less than 100cm. This study also suggests new scale systems of brittleness and uniaxial compressive strength to evaluate the possible tendency for a rockburst. These systems are scaled based on the scale system of strain energy density. In addition, with these scale systems, this research shows that there are potentially higher tendencies for rockbursts in this specific tunnel. Moreover this research suggests that properties of rock and rock mass, RMR (Rock Mass Rating) value, tunneling method, excavating speed, and depth of tunnel have a strong correlation with rockbursts.
