  • Four tunnels have been planned to operate a large diameter shielded TBM in Gwangju urban subway construction site. No.1 tunnel has completely been excavated for 13 months operating. Net penetration rate and its relations with thrust farce of the shielded TBM are analysis in this report. This shallow depth tunnel of 536m length is located in soil layers at launching and in hard rocks at ending with 84 m length. The weekly net penetration rates haute dropped down as low as 20∼110 mm/hr in rock while 400∼800 mm/hr in soil. The actual penetration rates we proved to be high as the theoretical penetration rate which is analysis in consideration of conditions of machine and rock. And net penetration rate is investigated to increase linearly thrust force.

  • This study applied a hydraulic rock splitting system equipped with a hybrid packer to the bench-cut method. The hybrid packer system is an improvement of the packer developed in previous studies; it is designed efficiently to reduce vibration and noise during rock excavation by combining the two functions of inducing hydraulic fractures using injection pressure and then expanding and extending them using a rubber packer. Field experiments assessed the efficiency of rock excavation with respect to the injection conditions; the adjusted experimental conditions included the distance from the free surface and the test holes drilled at the top of the slope and the injection settings. Using a separation of 5 m left some unexcavated parts, but using a separation of 1 m left no unexcavated parts. The hydraulic fractures generated by the injection pressure developed generally parallel to the free surface and expanded and extended as the rubber packer expanded, thus facilitating bench-cut excavation. For hydraulic rock splitting to be broadly applicable to bench-cut rock excavation, it is important to accumulate results from many field experiments conducted under varying experimental conditions for various types of rockmass.

  • In cable tunnel construction using TBM, the vertical shaft is an essential structure for entrance and exit of TBM equipment and power lines. Since a shaft penetrates the ground vertically, it often encounters rock mass. Blasting or rock splitting methods, which are mainly used to the rock excavation, cause public complaints due to the noise, vibration and road occupation. Therefore, mechanical excavation using vertical shaft excavation machine are considered as an alternative to the conventional methods. However, at the current level of technology, the vertical excavation machine has limitation in its performance when applied for high strength rock with a compressive strength of more than 120 MPa. In this study, the potential utilization of waterjet technology as an excavation assistance method was investigated to improve mechanical excavation performance in the hard rock formations. Rock cutting experiments were conducted to verify the cutting performance of the abrasive waterjet. Based on the experimental result, it was found that ensuring excavation performance with respect to changing in ground conditions can be achieved by adjusting waterjet parameters such as standoff distance, traverse speed and water pressure. In addition, based on the relationship between excavation performance, uniaxial compressive strength and RQD, it was suggested that excavation performance could be improved by artificially creating joints using the abrasive waterjet. It is expected that these research results can be utilized as fundamental data for the introduction of vertical shaft excavation machines in the future.

  • Excavation of an opening in a saturated porous rock may lead to the development of pore pressure around the opening due to the redistribution of initial rock stresses. The built-up of pore pressure, in turn, may affect the mechanical behavior of rock mass and give the different pattern of stress distribution around the opening from that of the case where the coupling is neglected. In this study, the short time response of an opening excavated in saturated ground under anisotropic initial stress conditions was investigated numerically. Not on the wall of opening but at a short distance from the wall, the tangential stresses were peak during the short period after excavation when the hydro-mechanical coupling is considered.

  • An improved packer and injection system was developed to improve the efficiency of excavation by hydraulic rock splitting by reducing vibration and noise. Field testing of the system found hydraulic fractures limited in expansion and extension due to the loss of injection pressure by leackage from the cracks, and then the single packer applied to injection hole allowed to produce a sufficient tensile displacement for rock excavation. Numerical analysis based on the field test data could explain the development of cracks in the field experiments.

  • Rock socketed drilled shafts are used as foundations for bridges and other transportation structures because of their load carrying capabilities. However, only limited information is available in the literature on the effects of roughness on the unit side resistance of rock socketed drilled shafts. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of drilling tools on the socket roughness in soft clay shale in Texas. Field study showed that the drilling tools, auger and core barrel, produced different roughness in the boreholes.

  • Loads on the pillar and ground deformation in 2-arch tunnel, which is excavated in the rock mass with regular discontinuities, depending on the dips of discontinuities and the construction sequences were experimentally studied. Large scale model tests in the biaxial test facility were performed. Tested model (width 3.3m, height 3.0m, and length 0.45m) for 2-arch tunnel in 1/10 scale were built with various dips. Test results show that discontinuities have greate affects on the behavior of the 2-arch tunnel, especially on the pillar loads and ground deformation.

  • Building tunnels means dealing with what rock is encountered. Relocation of the site of the underground structure is rarely possible. Tunneling engineers and miners have to cope with the quality of the rock mass as it is. Different tunneling philosophies and different rock classification methods have been developed in various countries. Most of the rock classification methods are based on the response of the rock mass to the excavation. Tunnel support requirements could be assessed analytically, supplemented by rock mass classification predictions, and verified by measurements during construction. Rock mass classifications on their own should only be used for preliminary, planning purposes and not for final tunnel support. Design of blast pattern in tunneling projects in Korea is also mostly prepared according to the general rock classification methods such as RMR or Q. They, however, do not take into account the blast performance, and as a consequence, produce poor blasting results. In this paper, the methods of general rock classification and blast design for tunnel excavation in Korea are reviewed, and efforts to develop a new classification method, reflecting the blasting performance, are presented.
