  • The influence of phosphorus and nitrogen application on the uptake of radioactive strontium by Chinese cabbage and raddish was studied in pot experiments. The dry matter yield of Chinese cabbage and raddish increased with the application of phosphorus and nitrogen. High yield of raddish was obtained by the additions of nitrate while Chinese cabbage was obtained by the ammonium. The content of potassium in the vegetables was enhanced by the application of phosphorus. and the calcium content increased with the application of nitrogen. The content of $^{90}Sr$ was higher in the raddish than in the Chinese cabbage while the $^{90}Sr$ activity in the dry matter of vegetables decreased considerably with the application of phosphorus and nitrogen fertilizer. This indicates that the suppression of uptake was more effective with the application of nitrate than with ammonium.

  • Urea, which is the major nitrogenous fertilizer used in Korea, has been used inefficiently in direct-seeding on dry soil by farmers. This study was conducted to investigate changes in concentrations of basal N within soil layers and its loss during early stage of rice growth. Urea fertilizer was applied in the rates of 7, 5.25, 3.5, 1.75, 0kg- N /10a under direct-seeded rice in dry paddy soil. The concentrations of ammonium and nitrate were determined in soil samples with different depths during period from seeding to the 3rd leaf stage. Futhermore, N leaching was measured in lysimeter designed with pot in greenhouse. ${NH_4}^+ \; and\; {NO_3}^-$ adsorption by soil increased with increasing concentration of added urea and decreased as deeper in soil layers. ${NH_4}^+$ concentration reached its peak at 7 days after urea application (DAA) and disappeared almostly at 14 DAA. ${NO_3}^-$ reached its peak at 10 DAA and decreased slowly until 14 DAA. ${NO_3}^-$N leaching started next day after urea application and completed until 11 DAA. We concluded that most of basal N applied to direct-seeded paddy was lost by leaching and not useful for rice plant which was in stage of germination. It is urgent need to develop new nitrogen application method for direct-seeding rice on dry soil.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the changing patterns of the available elements by the control of lime addition amount and temperature in Acid Sulfate Soils under the submerged condition. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. pH and contents of available phosphate, soluble silicate, $NH_4-N$, and exchangeable iron in soils were decreased but exchangeable aluminium and manganese, and water soluble sulfur in soils increased after submergence. 2. Lime treatment increased pH, available phosphate, soluble silicate, $NH_4-N$, and water soluble sulfur, but that decreased exchangeable aluminium, iron, and manganese in soils. 3. Treatment with 12me/100gr of Ca as $CaCO_3$, showed the marked effect in increasing the exchangeable aluminium and iron, and increasing pH value to about 6.5 as well as available phosphate and $NH_4-N$. 4. Increases in available phosphate, $NH_4-N$, and exchangeable iron with aging of the soil flooded and lime treated were higher at $35^{\circ}C$ than those at $25^{\circ}C$. 5. Throughout submerged period a significant positive correlation was observed between pH and soluble silicate while the pH has negative correlation with exchangeable elements such as aluminium, iron, and manganese etc.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of nitrogen fertilizer forms, fertilizer and herbicide application rates on growth of radish. The nitrate content and nitrate reductase activity of radish were analyzed along with the growing stage. Nitrate nitrogen was more efficient than ammonium nitrogen for radish. With increasing the fertilizer application rate, accumulated of nitrate content was increased. The amount of nitrate nitrogen was highest at 25days after seeding in petioles, and $32{\sim}39days$ after seeding in root. Nitrate content was decreased as sampling date was delayed, whereas the content increased in the root at early growing stage and then decreased. The nitrate cotent increased in the order of petioles, roots, and leaf blades and nitrate reductase activity increased petioles, leaf blades, and roots. The higher nitrogen fertilizer and herbicide application increased nitrate nitrogen accumulation in radish as compaired with control treatment and nitrate reductase activity showed similar trend.

  • Aerobic treatment of animal slurries represents an increasingly popular option for farmers in the management of animal wastes. This study was performed to find out the chemical characteristics of dairy slurry associated with liquid-solid separation. Total solids concentration varies widely depending on the slurry manure handling systems. Hydrogen ion exponent(pH), volatile solids(VS), ammonia nitrogen(NH$_3$-N), nitrate nitrogen (NO$_3$-N), and chemical oxygen demand(COD) essentially depends on the total solids content of animal liquid wastes. Total solids content of the dairy slurry ranges from 6.6 to 7.5% depending on the feed slurry and separator. Separated liquids from dairy slurry have been successfully downed for up to about 21, 900mg/$\ell$ of the COD value. It has also been found that separated slurry decreased from 37.8 to 26.0mg/$\ell$ of the NO$_3$-N concentration.

  • The effects of carbohydrate sources(sucrose, glucose) and ratio of ammonia to nitrate on essential oil production and its com- positions in the callus culture of Mentha piperita L. were studied. An ammonia : nitrate ratio of 1 :2 was more effective for essential oil production regardless of the media used ; Lin-Staba(LS) and modify Murashige-Skoog(MS) medium. Menthol biosynthesis was enhanced when ratio of ammonia to nitrate was 1 :3 in the LS medium while the ratio was 1 :2 in the MS medium. Lower sucrose concentration(20g /1 ) was much better than higher sucrose concentration(30g /1) for both oil and menthol biosynthesis in the LS medium but higher sucrose concentration(30g /1) was more effective for those in the MS medium. When sucrose was replaced with glucose, menthol biosynthesis was sharply decreased or absent regardless of media used.

  • Physicochemical characteristics of kochujang prepared with addition of garlic and onion, were investigated for 22 weeks of fermentation to obtain information on improving the quality of traditional kochujang. Moisture contents of kochujang increased during fermentation, but total nitrogen contents decreased slightly. The pH and titratable acidity of kochujang changed a little by addition of garlic or onion. Total sugar contents of kochujang decreased rapidly after 4 weeks, but reducing sugar contents increased until 2 weeks of fermentation. As the ratio of garlic increased, reducing sugar contents decreased. Ethanol contents increased during fermentation as mixing ratio of onion increased. Amino nitrogen contents of kochujang increased as mixing ratio of garlic or onion increased, but ammonia nitrogen contents decreased. Water activities of kochujang decreased slightly during fermentation, but consistency increased until 18 weeks. The color values of garlic or onion added kochujang were low in the L-values, but a- and b-values increased. Results of sensory evaluation showed garlic added$(2{\sim}4%)$ kochujang were more acceptable than onion added kochujang due to more favorable taste and flavor.

  • To investigate the effect of inorganic nutrient supplement in oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus), we have conducted some study on cultural and growth characteristics of fruitbody formation and chemical composition of media and fruitbody. When supplemented with slow releasing fertilizer, contamination rate was not different from non-supplemented medium, days for incubation time and first pinhead were faster than non supplemented medium. And fruitbody yield and biological efficiency were increased $10{\sim}28%,\;7{\sim}20%$ respectively, but biological efficiency was decreased when increased supplement ratio. The chemical compositions (total carbon, total nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, potassium and phosphate) of slow releasing fertilizer supple mented medium and fruitbody were compared with non-supplemented.

  • In order to learn about the volatilization of ammonia in relation to the amont of nitrogenous fertilizer, a laboratory experiment incubated between $35-40^{\circ}C$ for seven days, applying with 3.75mg N, 7.5mg N, and 11.25mg N in urea form, had been carried out. The result obtained are as follows : 1. As the amont of urea increases, the volatilization of ammonia enhanced. The enhancement of the volatilization of ammonia showed a close relationship with the pH raise of soil which is resulted from the formation of ammonia in soil. 2. Over liming decreased the volatilization of ammonia depressing the hydrolysis of urea and the ammonification of soil nitrogen. This tendency was far more pronounced when the pH of soil exceed 8.0.

  • Effect of Simazine(2-chloro-4,6-bis (ethylamino)-s-triazine), Nitrofen (2, 4-dichloro-4' -nitrodiphenylether), Propanil (:3, 4-dichloropropionanilide), and Butachlor (2-chloro-2, 6-diethyl N-(buthoxymenthyl) acetanilide on urea hydrolysis and subsequent nitrification was investigated in an upland soil incubated at $20\pm1^{\circ}C$. 1. All the herbicides tested had no effect on the hydrolysis of urea to ammonia at the recommended rates. Butachlor, at ten and fifty times the recommended rate, and Nitrofen, at fifty times the recommeded rate, depressed urea hydrolysis, resulting in reduction of ammonia. But the depressive effects were temporary, disappearing soon. Simazine and Propanil had no detrimental effect on urea decomposition at all the treated rates. 2. Also, all the chemicals tested had no effect on the nitrification process at the recommended rates. At higher concentrations of ten and fifty times the recommended rate Butachlor and Nitrofen inhibited the oxidation of nitrite, and propanil long inhibited the oxidation of ammonium to nitrite, but was inactive against nitrite oxidizer. These inhibitive effects of the chemicals, however, disappeared in the later period of incubation. Simazine had no effect on the nitrification process at all the treated rates. 3. The trend of change in soil pH of both the treated and untreated plots well reflected the change of soil nitrogen forms during incubation. No direct effect of the chemicals on soil pH was obserbed.
