The Dongcheondong granite is alkali feldspar granite in Dongcheondong, Gyeongju. The granite is coarse grained and consists of alkali feldspar, quartz, amphibole, and biotite. Alkali feldspar is perthitic orthoclase and quartz often shows undulatory extinction. Plagioclase often shows albite twins, and biotite and amphibole emplace as interstitial minerals. The Dongcheondong granite is plotted in A-type area having high ($Na_2O+K_2O)/Al_2O_3$ and low (MgO+CaO)/FeOT ratio. The Dongcheondong A-type granite has higher $SiO_2$, $Na_2O$, $K_2O$, Zr, Y, and REE contents (except for Eu) and lower $TiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, CaO, MgO, Sr, Ba, and Eu contents than I-type granites in Gyeongsang Basin. These results show that the geochemical characteristics of the Dongcheondong A-type granite are distinguished from I-type granite in Gyeongsang Basin. A-type granite in the Dongcheondong is thought to has been generated by partial melting of I-type tonalite or granodiorite.
Petrological and geochemical characteristics of A-type granite were studied from the Namsan and Tohamsan granites in the vicinity of Kyeongju city, southeastern Korea. The Namsan granite consists of hypersolvus alkali-feldspar granite in the northern part and subsolvus alkali-feldspar to biotite granite in the southern part. This hypersolvus granite usually has miarolitic cavities and is characteristically composed of quartz, single homogeneous one-feldspar (alkali feldspar) forming tabular microperthite crystals, or micrographic intergrowth with quartz, and interstitial biotite (Fe-rich annite), alkali amphibole (riebeckitic arfvedsonite) and fluorite. Petrographic and petrochemical characteristics indicate that the hypersolvus granite and subsolvus granite from the Namsan belogn to the A-type and I-type granitoid, respectively. The A-type granite is petrochemically distinguished from the I-type Bulgugsa granites of Late Cretaceous in South Korea, by higher abundance of $SiO_2$, $Na_2O$, $Na_2O+K_2O$, large highly charged cations such as Rb, Nb, Y, Zr, Ga, Th, Ce. U the REEs and Ga/Al ratio, and lower abundance of $TiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, CaO, $P_2O_5$, MnO, MgO, Ba, Sr, Eu. The total abundance of REEs is 293 ppm to 466 ppm, showing extensively fractionated granitic compositon, and REEs/chondrite normalized pattern shows flat form with strong Eu '-' anomaly ($Eu/Eu^{\ast}$=0.03-0.05). A-type granite from the Namsan area is thought to have been generated late in the magmatic/orogenic cycle after the production of I-type granite and by direct, high-temperature partial melting of melt-depleted, relatively dry tonalitic/granulitic lower crustal material with underplating by mantle-derived basaltic magmas associated with subduction.
Asian dust (Hwangsa) deposited on the surface of the Korean Peninsula is difficult to recognize their existence in mountainous terrain undergoing active erosion and weathering. This study examined Asian dust sediments mixed in soils by analysing clay mineralogy, mineral composition, and microtextures of fine silt (< 20 ㎛) in the alkali feldspar granite area of Seoraksan. The fine silt was composed of detrital particles derived from bedrocks, Asian dust sediments, and their weathering products. Clay minerals of 2:1 structural type, chlorite, amphibole, epidote, and Ca-bearing plagioclase were identified as eolian mineral particles. During the weathering of the bedrock composed of quartz and alkali feldspars, albite was partially weathered to produce small amounts of gibbsite and kaolin minerals. Hydroxy-Al interlayered clay minerals were formed by the exchange and fixation of polynuclear Al cationic species into the interlayers of expandable 2:1 clay minerals dominated by illite-smectite series clay minerals. Contribution of Asian dust to the fine silt of soils was estimated around 70% on the basis of total contents of 2:1 phyllosilicates.
A nondestructive petrological investigation was carried out to identify the original location and form of the Gyeongju Seated Stone Buddha with Square Pedestals in the Blue House (so-called Stone Buddha in the Blue House). The Statue is a representative stone Buddha statue of Silla (9th century) but its original location is controversial and some parts were missing. Based on the petrological observation, magnetic susceptibility and gamma spectrometry, its stone material was identified as medium-grained alkali feldspar granite. This kind of granites are widely found in the Namsan, Gyeongju. It is very likely that the Namsan granites are the source of rock of the Stone Buddha. The Yudeoksa (Igeosaji temple site) and Namsan are possible to be the original home of the Buddha Statue since there are petrologically identical alkali feldspar granite outcrop distributed in Namsan and stone heritage made of the same stone type in both places. An investigation on the square middle stone base in the Chuncheon National Museum reveals that it is less likely to be the missing part of the Buddha statue as the stone base is fine- to medium-grained pink feldspar granite and has different magnetic susceptibility from the Buddha statue. This study confirmed the contribution and significance of petrological investigation to identification of stone heritage in Korea.
Granitic rocks in the Cheongsan area cosist of three plutons-Baegrog granodiorite, Cheongsan porphyritic granite, and two mica granite. Amphilboles from the Baegrog granodiorite belong to the calcic amphilbole group and show compositional variations from magnesio-hornblende in the core to actinolitic hornblende in the rim. Biotites from the three granites represent intermediate compositions between phlogopite and annite. Muscovites from the two mica granite are considered to be primary muscovite in terms of the occurrence and mineral chemistry. Each granitic rock reveals systematic variation of major oxide contents with $SiO_2$. Major oxide variation trends of the Baegrog granodiorite are fairly different from those of Cheongsan porphyritic granite and two mica granite. The latter two granitic rocks are also different with each other in variation trends for some oxides. Thus three granitic rocks in the Cheongsan area were solidifield from the independent magmas of chemically different, heterogeneous origin. The granitic rocks in the area show calc-alkaline nature. The whole rock geochemistry shows that the Baegrog granodiorite and Cheongsan porphyritic granite belong to metaluminous, I-type granite, whereas the two mica granite to peraluminous, I/S-type granite. The opaque mineral contents and magnetic susceptibility represent that the granitic rocks in the area are ilmenite-series granite, indicating that each magma was solidified under relatively reducing environment. The tectonic environment of the granitic activity in the area seems to have been active continental margin. Alkali feldspar megacryst in the Cheongsan porphyritic granite is considered to be magmatic, judging from the crystal size, shape, arrangement, and distribution pattern of inclusions. The petro-graphical characteristics of the Cheongsan porphyritic granite can be explained by two stage crystallization. Under the smaller degree of undercooling the alkali feldspar megacrysts rapidly grew owing to slow rate of nucleation and fast growth rate. At the larger degree of undercooling the nucleation rate and density drastically increased and the small crystals of the matrix were formed.
