미국의 의사 알렌은 우리나라에 처음 들어온 서양의사로 1884년부터 20년동안 이 땅에 살아오면서 의술을 펴왔다. 알렌은 우리나라 최초의 근대식 병원 광혜원을 세웠으며 자객의 칼에 맞은 민비의 조카 민영익의 생명을 구해냈다. 민영익과의 인연으로 시의가 된 알렌은 어렸을 때 천연두로 시력을 잃었던 이승만을 치료해 시력을 회복시켜 주기도 했다.

The purpose of this research is to test the relationship between ACLT(Allen Cognitive Level Test) and FIM(Functional Independence Measure), MMSE-K(Mini-Mental State Examination), and MFT(Manual Function Test). 38 elderly persons with stroke were recruited. Pearson Correlation Coefficients is used for correlation test. There is statistically significant correlation between ACLT and FIM, MMSE-K, and MFT(p<.05). This results identified the relationship between cognitive function and activities of daily living, indicated the usability of ACLT as a cognition assessment tool and the need of research for it's application in stroke patients.

We had applied Doppler ultrasound guided modified Allen's test for a Volkmann's ischemic contracture patient who had ulnar artery constriction which was not detected with acoustic Doppler and CT-angiogram preoperatively. We report this case of Volkmann's ischemic contracture with brief review of literatures for awareness of the Doppler-ultrasound guided modified Allen's test.

One of central issues in the Literature and Science discourses during the Victorian era is the relation of physiology to psychology. Many thinkers tackle the question of whether or not psychic phenomena can be reducible to their physiological bases. For instance, Victorian physiologist William Benjamin Carpenter claims that there should be a boundary between physiological and psychological qualities. Yet, his contemporary writer Grant Allen contends for the reduction of psychology into physiology. In the essay, I discuss Grant Allen's work Physiological Aesthetics (1877) so as to eventually problematize his physiological reductionism. I especially highlight the paradox of his physiological aesthetics. In order to clarify my argument, I introduce two concepts: evolutionary aesthetics and physiological reductionism. On the one hand, Allen argues for the development of aesthetic appreciation. The gradual evolution from gaudy to serene colors, for instance, reflects the fine differentiation of sensory organs. He believes that the existence of varied aesthetic pleasures corresponds to the evolution of sensory nerve structures. Nonetheless, Allen ironically gives more weight to the commonality of aesthetic experiences than to this teleological ordering of aesthetic experiences. He argues that there is no fundamental difference among humans in terms of their aesthetic assessments. Furthermore, there is even no essential distinction among plants, animals, and humans in light of their aesthetic appraisals, he states firmly. Although he asserts the gradual advance of aesthetic feelings caused by the intricacy of nervous systems, he simultaneously trivializes the evolution of aesthetic appraisal. In the essay, I highlight this paradox in Allen's physiological aesthetics. It should be underscored, lamentably enough, that Allen seeks biological purity by erasing fine lines among physiology, psychology, and sociality. He estranges aesthetic experiences from subjective variations and their socio-cultural contexts. He makes great efforts to eliminate individual differences and socio-cultural specificities in order to extremely biologize aesthetic experiences. Hence, Allen's physiological aesthetics is marked as the politics of physiological purification.

Stereoselectivities of (4+2) cycloaddition reactions of cyclopentadiene with the methyl-substituted allenic acids and esters were investigated by application of $\pi$-nonbonded interaction ($\pi$-NBI) theory. 2-FMO method has been found to be adequate for determination of endo selectivities of diene(LUMO)-dienophile (LUMO) interaction in the thermal reactions and diene (HOMO)-dienophile (LUMO) interaction in the Lewis acid catalyzed reactions. $\pi$-isoconjugate diene structure was formed by through-bond interaction of allene moiety with methyl group in the cumulated diene system; the methyl substituent acts as a conjugative chain and causes inter-level narrowing effect of the FMO's. In dienophiles which do not form $\pi$-isoconjugate diene system, methyl group acts merely as an electron donating group. In thermal reactions, the stereoselectivities are controlled by $\pi$-nonbonded secondary orbital interaction ($\pi$-NSOI) of methyl substituent, which behaves similarly as an ethylene molecule.

연세대 의대 전신인 세브란스 의학전문학교의 설립자이며 초대 교장이던 올리버 알 에비슨. 영국 태생으로 6세때 캐나다로 이주하여 토론토 의대를 졸업하고 의사가 된 에비슨은 토론토를 방문했던 언더우드와 인연이 되어 1893년 한국에 와서 알렌이 세운 최초의 서양식 병원 제중원의 운영을 맡으면서 미국의 부호 세브란스의 후원으로 세브란스병원을 열고 의학전문학교를 세워 이 땅에 서양의사를 길러낸 것이다.

연세대학교의료원은 1885년 미국선교의사 알렌에 의해 한국 최초의 현대적 의료기관(광혜원)으로 설립된 이래 약 130여 년 동안 국내 의료계률 이끌어왔다. 그 오랜 세월에 걸쳐 이곳이 국내 최고 의료기관으로 군림할 수 있었던 이유는 무엇일까. 물론 가장 큰 이유는 수준 높은 의료환경이다. 하지만 단지 이것만으로 지금의 명성을 얻은 것은 아니다. 그 또 다른 비결 중 대표적인 것이 바로 '안전'이다. 이곳의 사명인 '인류를 질병으로부터 자유롭게 한다'는 안전의 핵심 가치인 '인간존중'과 일맥상통한다. 이에 따라 이곳은 환자와 의료진, 직원 등 구성원 모두가 안전한 병원을 만들기 위해 꾸준히 노력해왔다. 치료의 시작은 사고 및 질병예방, 즉 철저한 안전보건관리라고 말하는 연세대학교의료원을 찾아가 봤다.

Butenolides are prepared from cyclobutenediones when cyclobutenediones are treated with lithium trimethylsilylacetylene, and quenched with water. A plausible mechanism, which contains an allene as an intermediate, is proposed. The usual diradical intermediate may not be formed because of the bulkiness of trimethylsilyl group, and the allenic intermediate may be stabilized by the ${\alpha}$-silyl group.
