Effects of dry eye syndrome symptoms and asthenopia on vision-related quality of life in middle-aged patients with dry eye syndrome (중년기 안구건조증 환자의 안구건조 증상정도와 안구피로가 시력관련 삶의 질에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: This is a cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the effects of dry eye syndrome symptoms and eye fatigue on the vision-related quality of life (QOL) of middle-aged patients with dry eye syndrome. Methods: The participants of this study were 94 ophthalmology clinic outpatients aged 40-59 years who were diagnosed with dry eye syndrome at A and S Ophthalmology Clinics in D City, South Korea, and were exhibiting dry eye syndrome symptoms. Data were collected from July 5, 2021 to July 22, 2021, and analyzed using independent t-test, analysis of variance, Scheffe test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis using the SPSS/WIN 25.0 program. Results: The severity of dry eye syndrome symptoms and asthenopia (r=.73, p<.001) in the participants were positively correlated, whereas the severity of dry eye syndrome symptoms and vision-related quality of life (r=-.76, p<.001) were negatively correlated. Additionally, there was a negative relationship between eye fatigue and vision-related QOL (r=-.55, p<.001). It was found that the final factors affecting the vision-related QOL of middle-aged patients with dry eye syndrome were the severity of dry eye syndrome symptoms (β=-0.76, p<.001) and dry eye stress (β=-0.14, p=.048). The explanatory power of vision-related QOL in the participants was 56.0%. Conclusion: To develop indices that can objectively measure patients' subjective symptoms for improving their vision-related QOL is necessary.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of systemic chronic inflammatory state on dry eye syndrome as a local chronic inflammatory condition. From June 16, 2016 to December 31, 2016, 726 patients who visited the general health examination center were screened using the Schirmer's test and the metabolic syndrome screening test. A total of 214 patients who were studied for hs-CRP and HbA1c were simultaneously selected for the study as well. Dry eye syndrome significantly increased in higher age groups (p<0.001) and women (p=0.020); there was no significant relationship with fasting plasma glucose, hs-CRP. In addition, as HbA1c increased the risk for dry eye syndrome also increased (β=1.960, p=0.025). Therefore, dry eye syndrome may not caused by microvascular changes in the lacrimal gland due to chronic inflammatory conditions. In diabetic patients, long-term blood glucose control may be more important than short-term blood glucose control. The high prevalence of dry eye syndrome in diabetic patients is thought to be due to autonomic dysfunction rather than microvascular changes caused by chronic inflammation.

Factors Influencing the Cognitive Degree of Dry Eyes in Nursing Students (간호대학생의 안구건조 자각정도에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify the factors that influence the cognitive degree of dry eyes in nursing students. Methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study. Data was collected using self-administered questionnaires (cognitive degree of dry eyes, Standard Patients Evaluation of Eye Dryness [SPEED] questionnaire, and McMonnies questionnaire) from 233 nursing students of E university. Results: The mean scores for the cognitive degree of dry eyes, SPEED, and McMonnies were 21.43, 8.02, and 6.39, respectively. The cognitive degree of dry eyes was found to have a significantly positive correlation with McMonnies and SPEED scores. Additionally, the factors that influenced the cognitive degree of dry eyes among nursing students were hours of using smart phones, McMonnies score, and the SPEED score. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that interventions need to developed and applied to reduce and control the cognitive degree of dry eyes among nursing students.

  • 4월 살랑살랑 봄이 오면 예쁘게 차려입고 화장도 하고 봄 마중을 하고 싶은 마음이 간절해진다. 하지만 건조한 날씨와 황사로 인해 눈이 수시로 따갑고 뻑뻑해지며 눈물까지 더 나는 바람에 한껏 예쁘게 한 눈 화장이 지워질까 걱정되어 외출하기가 두려워진다. 왜일까? 이유는 이제는 국민병이라고 불릴 만큼 흔한 안구건조증 때문이다.

  • IT 기술은 끊임없는 발전을 거듭하고 있으며 현 인류는 기계와 더불어 살고 있다. Desktop, 스마트폰, 노트북 및 태블릿PC는 물론이고, 스마트 워치와 같은 '웨어러블 디바이스(Wearable Device)'의 등장으로 기계 속 세상에 그들과 함께 살고 있다하여도 과언이 아니다. 단연 잦은 기기 사용으로 인해 가장 영향을 크게 받는 인간의 신체 부위는 '눈'이다. 휴대용 기기(Portable Device)는 휴대에 용이해야 한다는 특징 때문에 그 크기가 점차 작아지고 있다. 따라서 작은 기기에 부착된 화면 역시 크기가 감소하였다. 장시간 작은 화면을 집중하여 보게 되면 눈의 피로가 금방 쌓이게 된다. 이로 인해 안구 건조 증 및 시력 저하 발생률이 증가하게 되는데, 영상처리 기술을 이용하여 안구의 깜박임을 감지하고 일정 수치 이하로 깜박임 횟수가 미달될 경우에 안구 운동을 권장하는 프로그램을 개발 하였다.

Thermographic Assessment on Temperature Change of Eye Surface in Cataract Surgery Observation (백내장수술 안에서 열화상카메라를 이용한 안구표면 온도의 변화)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the temperature changes of the ocular surface before and after cataract surgery using thermography of a thermal imaging camera. Methods : The study included 75 patients (75 eyes) aged from 50 to 79 years who underwent cataract surgery. In the past, those who underwent corneal-related surgery, wearing contact lens, disorder of tear secretion and taking medication for systemic disease were excluded from this study. The temperature changes of the eyeball surface were measured using a thermal imager (Cox CX series, Answer, Korea) following Tear Break Up Time (TBUT) test, Mcmonnies questionnaire and Schirmer's Test in real time, Results : While the temperature of preoperative ocular surface was $35.20{\pm}0.54^{\circ}C$ and that of postoperative temperature was $35.30{\pm}0.53^{\circ}C$, the difference was not significant. The temperature changes in the ocular surface were statistically significant at $-0.12{\pm}0.08{\Delta}$ ($^{\circ}C/sec$) before the surgery and $-0.18{\pm}0.07{\Delta}$ ($^{\circ}C/sec$) after the surgery. In comparison of the age groups, it was shown that the changes in the surface temperature before the surgery were from $-0.19{\pm}0.05{\Delta}$ ($^{\circ}C/sec$) to $-0.14{\pm}0.09{\Delta}$ ($^{\circ}C/sec$) in the 50s group, and from $-0.12{\pm}0.08{\Delta}$ ($^{\circ}C/sec$) to $-0.15{\pm}0.07{\Delta}$ ($^{\circ}C/sec$) in 60s group, and $-0.18{\pm}0.07{\Delta}$ ($^{\circ}C$) to $-0.12{\pm}0.08{\Delta}/sec$) in the 70s group, showing significant changes in the ocular surface temperature at all ages. Conclusion : Following the cataract surgery, all the indicators of dry eye syndrome were decreased, and eye surface temperature changes were significant. The thermography technique of the ocular surface would be expected to be useful for the evaluation of various dry eye syndromes because it is easy to evaluate dry eye syndrome noninvasively and can be quantified.
