  • The ultrastructure of submandibular gland was examined in the Korean spider shrew, Sorex caecutiens. The submandibular gland wat composed of acini and salivary ducts. A submadibular acinus was a mixed gland having serous demilune cells and mucous cells that were filled with well developed rER, mitochondria and large amount of dense secretory granules. Serous acinar granules were oval shape without distinct limiting membrane on the border and it had only coarse specks with various density. Mucous acinar granules were oval shape without distinct limiting membrane and had a variety pattern with several thin or transparent bands into the homogeneous dense matrix. Thus submandibular acinar granules of S. caecutiens belonging to subfamily Soricinae were distinct from the other mammalian species including Crocidurinae, because of the absence of limiting membrane of acinar granules and specific pattern of mucous acinar granules. Granular duct cells had large amount of small granular vesicles and several characteristic structures of granule which were revered with stratified limiting membranes and filled with coarse serous-like granule or homogeneous matrix.

  • Here we report the genome sequence of Veillonella atypica strain KHUD-V1 isolated from subgingival dental plaque of Korean chronic periodontitis patients. Unlike other V. atypica strains, KHUD-V1 carries two prophage regions and prophage remnants, as well as several genes homologous to prophage-associated virulence factors, such as virulence-associated protein E, a Clp protease, and a toxin-antitoxin system. The isolate and its genome sequence obtained here will aid to understand the diversity of the genome architecture of Veillonella within an evolutionary framework and the role of prophages that contribute to the genetic diversity as well as the virulence of V. atypica.

  • In the treatment of dentofacial deformities, analysis of skeletal pattern, with evaluation of plaster dental cast, is essential procedure. This study was based on 20 patients with dentofacial deformity who were admitted to the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery Kngnam sacred heart Hospital during the period of Jan 1988 through Aug 1989. We studied serial cephalometric radiogarphs of patients (pre-op, postop immediately, postop 6 moth). The obtained results indicates the good resistance of rigid fixation against relapse in orthognathic surgery.

  • Patients with skeletal class III can be succesfully treated by either orthognathic surgery or orthodontic treatment owing to unavoidable circumstances. Systers were treated , elder syster by orthognathic surgery and younger one by compromised treatment. For the ideal treatment goal, orthognathic surgery will be inevitable in skeletal problem case, but by the patient's private situations orthodontist cannot help doing compromised treatment. It could be another option if correct biomechanical approach is used.

  • The purpose of this experiment was to study the histologic changes of submabdibular glands of which ducts were cut and ligated. In A-Group of 4 dogs, the right submandibular ducts were intact as control, and ducts were ligated and the left submandibular ducts were cut. The submandibular glands were studied histologically after 2, 5, 8, and 12 weeks. The results were as follows : 1. The submandibular glands of which ducts were found as normal as control submand ibular glands. 2. The submandibular glands of which ducts were ligated were atrophied. 3. The cut submandibular ducts did not cause histologically atrophic changes on submandibular glands until 12 weeks.

  • The twenty eight taxa of rare and endangered plant species of Oesorak were investigated in the field, and the results were compiled according to the literature by Lee et al.(1996). Most of the populations of the investigated plants are located in the vicinity from the mountain trails which is the destruction pressures high. Also these plants are envisaged from the possible collections for both edible and medicinal purposes by local peoples, so the conservation strategies at the levels of habitat and species must be prepared. Taxuscaespitosa of Taxaceae has very few individuals and the status of the habitats envisaged serious problems from tramplings.

  • This study is based on the data of adults between ages of 19~65 yrs of the National Health and Nutrition Survey 4th in year of 2009, which includes symptoms of temporomandibular disorder within gender and age. Subjects included in this study were 2,738 males and 3,427 females, total of 6,165. All statistical analysis was measured by Window SPSS 17.0K Program (SPSS Inc., Chicago, USA). Prevalence of analysis of gender, age, and symptoms of temporomandibular disorder was measured by descriptive statistics, and in order to find relationship among gender, age, and symptoms of temporomandibular disorder was based on crosstabulation analysis. As results, prevalence of TMJ sound was 10.1%, of TMJ pain was 1.5%, and of TMJ limitation was 2.0%. Among the three symptoms of temporomandibular disorder, subjects who have at least one symptom was 1.2%. Prevalence of TMJ sound, of TMJ pain, and of TMJ limitation in female were 10.7%, 1.8% and 2.2%, respectively, which were greater than in male 9.3%, 1.2% and 1.6% respectively but it was stastically insignificant (p>0.05). Prevalence of TMJ sound, of TMJ pain, and of TMJ limitation in ages between 19~24 yrs were 18.7%, 3.4% and 4.2% respectively, which were higher than any other ages (p<0.05). Also prevalence of having at least one symptom of temporomandibular disorder, at least two, and three all were higher in females but stastically insignificant (p>0.05). On the other hand, prevalence of having at least one symptom of temporomandibular disorder, at least two, and three all were greater in age below 45 yrs and was stastically significant (p<0.05).
