Effects of BeHaS Exercise Program on Flexibility, Grip Strength, Stress and Self-esteem in Breast Cancer Survivors (베하스운동 프로그램이 유방암생존자의 유연성, 악력, 스트레스, 자아존중감에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify effectiveness of a BeHaS exercise program in breast cancer survivors. The subjects of breast cancer survivors participating in this research were selected from C National University Hospital. Methods: This study used non equivalent control group non-synchronized design with an experimental group (n=27) and a control group (n=31). The BeHaS exercise program consisted of theme activity, education, group support and exercise. The experimental group participated in session twice a week for ten weeks. Grip strength, perceived stress, cortisol, and self-esteem were measured. Data were analyzed by SPSS/WIN 12.0. Results: After the program, the grip strength and self-esteem of the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the control group. The perceived stress of the experimental group was significantly lower than that of the control group. Conclusion: The results of this study confirmed that BeHaS exercise program played a useful role in improving breast cancer survivor's physical and psychological problem.

A Study on Factors Related to Grip and Pinch Strength among Estheticians (피부미용사의 손 부위 악력 및 파지력 수준과 관련 요인)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to measure estheticians' grip and pinch strength in the hand parts and identify related factors according to general characteristics. Methods: A Jamar dynamometer was used to measure grip strength and a Jamar pinch gauge was used to measure tip, palmar and lateral pinch strength. General data were collected through a questionnaire survey among 116 estheticians from 31 skin care centers and spas. Results: The subjects' mean grip strength was 23.95 kgf for the right hand and 23.42 kgf for the left hand with the dominant right hand recording slightly higher mean grip strength. Their mean pinch strength was the highest with lateral pinch(right 4.89 kgf, left 4.69 kgf), which was followed by palmar pinch(right 3.77 kgf, left 3.88 kgf) and tip pinch(right 2.29 kgf, left 2.25 kgf), in that order. Conclusions: The grip and pinch strength of the hand parts was high when estheticians' commonly used both hands for massage instead of just one. The use of both hands is recommended to protect the hand parts during massage.

Wrist and Grasping Forces Estimation using Electromyography for Robotic Prosthesis (근전도 신호를 이용한 손목 힘 및 악력 추정)

  • This paper proposes a method to simultaneously estimate two degrees of freedom in wrist forces (extension - flexion, adduction - abduction) and one degree of freedom in grasping forces using Electromyography (EMG) signals of the forearms. To correlate the EMG signals with the forces, we applied a multi - layer perceptron(MLP), which is a machine learning method, and used the characteristics of the muscles constituting the forearm to generate learning data. Through the experiments, the similarity between the MLP target value and the estimated value was investigated by applying the coefficient of determination ($R^2$) and root mean square error (RMSE) to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. As a result, the $R^2$ values with respect to the wrist flexion-extension, adduction - abduction and grasping forces were 0.79, 0.73 and 0.78 and RMSE were 0.12, 0.17, 0.13 respectively.

Relationship between Fat-Free Mass and Grip Strength, Nutrient Intakes, Exercise Behavior in Middle- and Old-Aged Women (중년기, 노년기 여성에서 무지방조직과 악력, 식이섭취 및 운동습관과의 관계)

  • This study was performed to show change of fat-free mass(FFM), representing mostly the muscle mass change, and muscle strength with increasing age, and relationship between dietary, exercise behaviors and FFM in healthy middle-and old aged women who are of age over 55 years. The FFM and correspondingly hand grip strength showed significant positive correlation with age. But concentration of serum albumin showed no significant relationship with age. The subjects were categorized into groups according to FFM tertile. The anthropometry such as weight, BMI, fat mass, circumferences of waist and hip, WHR, and hand grip strength decreased significantly in the lowest FFM group. But the albumin level showed no change according to FFM level. The FFM showed significant correlation with nutrient intakes such as energy, carbohydrate, protein, Fe, P, Ca. No association, however, was shown with exercise behavior probably because of no case with resistance exercise habits. The variance of FFM was explained 55.2% by height and carbohydrate intake. The variance of height-adjusted FFM could be explained only 16.2% by intake amount of carbohydrate. In conclusion, the decrease of FFM may cause to reduce muscle strength in female elderly. The increasing nutrient intakes were associated with the increased FFM and may protect from risk of sarcopenia. However, only the carbohydrate intake could influence independently the FFM in middle- and old-aged women. The FFM has no association with endurance exercise habits.   • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of cancer-overcome BeHaS exercise program on pain, flexibility, grip strength and stress in patient with breast cancer following surgery. Method: Study was designed as a non-synchronized research method with a nonequivalent control group. Data collection was performed from September 2007 to January 1, 2008. Participants were 34 patients (experimental group: 19, control group: 15) undergoing surgery for breast cancer in a hospital in D city. Women in the experimental group were participated in the cancer-overcome BeHaS (Be Happy and Strong) exercise program for 60 minutes per session once a week for 8 weeks and it was recommended that they do the exercises once more each week at home. The control group received one education session on breast cancer management. Results: There were no significant differences between the two groups for pain, flexibility or grip strength. But stress in experimental group was significantly decreased compared to that of the control group. Conclusion: This result suggests that cancer-overcome BeHaS exercise program is helpful to reduce stress in patients after breast cancer surgery. Further research is needed for multi-dimensional evaluation on psycho-social effects of cancer-overcome BeHaS exercise program.

The Effect of Soft Tissue Mobilization Using Prop on the Pain, Grip Strength, Functional Activity and Proprioception in Patients with Lateral Epicondylitis (소도구를 활용한 연부조직가동술이 주관절 외측상과염 환자에게 통증과 악력, 기능, 고유수용성감각에 미치는 영향)

  • Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate into the effect of soft tissue mobilization using prop on the pain, grip strength and functional activity in patients with lateral epicondylitis. Methods: Fifteen patients with lateral epicondylitis were recruited. Before treatment, they were evaluated using visual analogue scale (VAS), grip strength, test, patient-rated tennis elbow evaluation (PRTEE), proprioception, and were reevaluated after six weeks of treatment. Results: As a result of comparing all participants before and after the experiment, the grip strength increased significantly (p<.05). And the VAS, PRTEE, and proprioception decreased significantly (p<.05). Conclusion: According to the results above, soft tissue mobilization using prop can help improve pain, grip strength, PRTEE and proprioception. Also, soft tissue mobilization using Blackroll's Twister technique was able to select interventions depending on the patient's condition and the desired goal.

Effects of Aquatic Exercise Program on Pain, Flexibility, Grip Strength, Self-Care Activities and Helplessness in Patients having Osteoarthritis (수중운동 프로그램 참여 후 골관절염 환자의 통증과 자기간호활동, 유연성, 악력 및 무력감의 변화)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of aquatic exercise program on pain, flexibility, grip strength, self-care activities, helplessness in osteoarthritis patients. Methods: This program was carried out three times a week for 6 weeks by 3 groups of patients among 42 patients in regular swimming pool. Data were analysed by paired t-test for pre and post comparison. Results: There were significantly improved in pain flexibility, grip strength, self-care activities and helplessness after the program. However no significant differences were found in fatigue, difficulty of daily living activities and depression. Conclusion: Aquatic program was proved to be an effective nursing intervention to increase the self-care activities flexibility and grip strength, and to decrease pain and helplessness in osteoarthritis patients.

The Effect of Progressive Resistance Training with Elastic Band on Grip Strength and Balance in Middle Elderly Women (중기 노인 여성의 점진성 저항운동이 악력과 균형에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted in order to determine the physical effect on grip strength and balance ability of progressive resistance training using an elastic band for middle elderly women. Methods: We randomly recruited 13 middle elderly female subjects (from 75 years old to 84 years old). They practiced the elastic band exercise for 50 minutes once every week and were instructed to perform the same exercise as a home exercise for 16 weeks. Subjects who participated voluntarily had not participated in any other exercise program. Grip strength, one leg stance, and TIme Up & Go Test (TUG) were measured before and after elastic band exercise using the one group pre-posttest design. Wilcoxon's signed ranks test and simple regression analysis were performed using SPSS 18.0. Results: Significant differences in TUG and grip strength test scores were observed pre and post exercise (p<0.05), except one leg stance test. Significant correlation was observed only between age and change of right one leg stance. Conclusion: Progressive resistance training using an elastic band for middle elderly women was effective for dynamic balance and grip strength, but was not effective for static balance. Therefore, investigation of factors that affect improvement of static balance using an elastic band and the lasting duration of the effect and its association with age will be necessary in the future.

Simultaneous Measurement of Vibration and Applied Forces at a Power Tool Handle for the Reduction of Random Error When valuating Hand-transmitted Vibration (수전달 진동평가량의 랜덤오차 저감을 위한 공구 핸들에서의 진동과 작용력의 동시 측정)

  • To increase accurateness and reliability of the evaluation of power tool vibration transmitted to an operator, it is necessary to measure the grip and feed forces during the measurement of hand-transmitted vibration. In the study a system was invented to measure the vibration and the grip and/or feed force, which consists of a measurement handle and a PC with a data acquisition system and the corresponding software. Strain gauges and an accelerometer were mounted on the handle surface for the simultaneous measurement of the forces and the vibration. The program in the system makes it possible to monitor the grip and feed force during the tool operation so that the operator keeps the applying forces within the pre-determined range. Investigating the vibration total values, frequency-weighted root-mean-square accelerations at the handle, obtained in repetition for each power tool with control of the grip and feed force showed more consistency than those measured without force control. By using the system the experimenter can reduce random error of the measured vibration.

The Effects of a Video Strength Exercise on Grip Strength, Balance, TUG in the Frail Elderly Women (동영상을 이용한 근력 강화 운동이 허약 여성노인의 악력, 균형, 이동능력에 미치는 영향)

  • PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate characteristics of the effects of a video strength exercise on grip strength, balance, timed up and go in the frail elderly women. METHODS: Subjects were thirty frail elderly people selected by the screening tool and they were divided into exercise group and control group. The video strength exercise was carried out for three time a week for 12 weeks. Data was analyzed with independent t-test between exercise and control group and paired t-test between before and after. RESULTS: There were not significant differences between exercise and control group. However, there were significant effects between before and after in exercise group. The grip strength and one-leg stand with eyes open were significant improved and timed up and go was significant decreases. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that the video strength exercise for the frail elderly was very effective on improving grip strength and one-leg stand and timed up and go.
