An Experimental Study on Flexural Behavior of Beams Reinforced with Zinc-Coated Rebar (아연코팅 철근콘크리트 보의 휨 거동 실험 연구)

  • Coating is one of the methods used to solve the problem of corrosion of reinforcement in concrete structures. There are few research reported in the literature regarding the effect of zinc-coating on flexural behavior compared to epoxy coating. The objective of this study was to determine whether zinc-coated rebar adversely affects flexural behavior. Concrete beams reinforced with black or zinc-coated steel were tested in flexure. The test variables included the presence of rebar surface coating with zinc, steel ratio used and cover depth. The study concentrated on comparing crack pattern, crack width, deflection and strain. The ultimate flexural capacity of beams reinforced with zinc-coated bars was not different from that of black steel reinforced beams. The results from deflection and crack width measurements were indicative of no significant variation for the different rebar surface conditions. In addition, it was found that load-strain curve of beam reinforced with zinc-coated steel was similar to that of beam reinforced with zinc-coated steel. Therefore, the test results indicated that the use of zinc-coated rebar had no adverse effect on flexural behavior compared to the use of black rebar.

  • 해양환경에서의 아연코팅철근 콘크리트 보의 휨 성능 및 균열 특성 실험을 수행하였다. 또한, 보에서 발생하는 균열 및 파괴양상을 파악하였다. 그 결과, 해양환경에서의 콘크리트 부재의 피복두께를 기존 설계기준보다 작게 적용시켜도 부재에 발생하는 염해에 대한 내구성을 확보할 수 있으며, 아연코팅 철근의 적용은 일반철근 콘크리트 보다 내구성 측면에서 유리하다고 판단된다.

Study on Corrosion and Structural Performance in Hot-Dip Galvanizing Steel (용융아연도금 철근의 부식 특성 및 구조적 특성에 대한 연구)

  • Steel corrosion is one of the most critical deteriorations in concrete structures due to the problems associated with both durability and structural safety issues. For protection of steel against corrosion problems, researches to improve concrete durability and steel corrosion protection such as rebar coating by hot-dip galvanizing steel have been carried out. This study was performed to quantitatively evaluate anti-corrosion and structural performance of concrete structures reinforced with hot-dip galvanizing steel rebar. Preliminary tests for several metal coatings such as zinc, aluminum, and their alloy (Zn 45% + AL 55%) were performed. After evaluation of corrosive characteristics, Zn was selected for the coating material and the corrosion behaviors in Zn-coated steel were evaluated in various conditions. Furthermore, tensile and adhesive strengths were evaluated for the normal and the hot-dip galvanized steel. The crack patterns and structural behaviors of RC specimens with the normal and coated steel were investigated. Also, corrosion characteristics including corrosion in various coating metal and potential change in metal with notch were evaluated. Structural performances of tensile and adhesive strengths as well as RC beam behavior under flexural/shear loading were evaluated. The test and evaluation results showed that the applicability of hot-dip galvanized steel rebar can be used as corrosion resistant reinforcements for RC structures.

  • 플로팅 건축용 콘크리트 구조물은 부식환경에 노출되어 매립된 철근의 부식에 따른 구조물의 내구성능에 문제가 발생하게 된다. 철근 부식에 의한 내구성이 저하되는 문제의 여러 효과적인 해결방법 중 하나로 철근 코팅 기법이 있으며, 철근의 용융아연도금시 표면에 용융아연층이 형성되어 철근을 보호하는 장점이 있으나 콘크리트와의 부착 성능에 대한 연구는 미비한 실정이다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 플로팅 건축용 콘크리트 구조물의 철근 겹이음에 따른 거동 특성연구를 수행하였다.

Characteristics of Bond Strength in Concrete Beams Reinforced with Galvanized Rebar (용융아연도금 철근콘크리트 보의 부착강도 특성)

The objective of this study was to determine whether galvanized rebar adversely affects lap splice behavior and bond strength. Concrete beams reinforced with black or galvanized rebar were tested in flexure. The test variables included the presence of galvanized rebar steel diameter, and lengths of lap splices. The study concentrated on comparing crack, failure pattern, and bond strength. The ultimate behavior of beams reinforced with galvanized rebar was not significantly different from that of black steel reinforced beams. Therefore, the test results indicated that the use of galvanizing-coated rebar had no adverse effect on behavior in lap splices of rebar compared to the use of black rebar.
