The separation of gallium and indium from the matrix elements such as zinc and other ions, especially form Fe(III) ion was studied for the determination of trace level of them in zinc ores and zinc blendes by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry(ICP-AES). Gallium and indium were extracted from the sample solution with a solvent of tributyl phosphate(TBP). The type and concentration of acid, interferences of other ions, the ratio of aqueous phase to organic phase, TBP concentration, sripping efficiency were optimized for the effective extraction. Gallium and indium were separated from other ions in the 5N hydrochloric acid solution of the samples by the extraction with 100% TBP. In this time, Fe(III) was reduced to Fe(II) with hydroxylamine hydrochloride to prevent its coextraction prior to the main extraxtion. After stripped from organic phase by the back-extraction with 0.02N HCl, they were determined in the aqueous phase by ICP-AES. This method was known to be quantitative from the overall extraction of more than 95%.
The study on the cytotoxicities of heavy metals, metal-metal and metal-chelator combinations was carried out to evaluate the cytotoxic effect of those on mouse L929 fibroblasts. The colorimetric assays (NR and MTT) were conveniently carried out in 96-well microtiter plates. The rank order was Cd > Zn Ni > Cr(III) for the heavy metals tested. Examination of the effect of metal-metal interaction on cytotoxicity showed a moderate reduction of cadmium toxicity by zinc. The colorimetric assays were also effectively used to investigate the effect of the chelators, ethylenediamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) and chitosan. Reduction of heavy metal toxixity by chelator was efficient.
A solvent extraction-atomic absorption spectrophotometry for determination of trace amount of cadmium, copper, lead and zinc and a flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometry for mercury in sea water were studied. The optimum pH range for solvent extraction was pH 4-7. A better solvent extraction efficiency was obtained with MIBK solvent than nitrobenzene, benzene, isoamylalcohol, n-buthylacetate. DDTC was more advantageous than APDC as chelating agent. The metals, chelated with DDTC and concentrated into MIBK by solvent extraction with a volume of $1\iota$ of sea water for cadmium, copper and lead, and 200m1 for zinc, were determined simultaneously by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. For mercury determination, 500ml of sea water was digested with permanganate-sulfuric acid and mercury( II ) was reduced by stannous chloride and aerated the solution with air pump until the absorbance reached a constant value. The precisions, in standard deviation, of these methods were 0.058ppb for cadmium, 0.084 ppb for copper, 0.44ppb for lead, 2.49ppb for zinc and 0.08 ppb for mercury. The sensitivities, expressed in $ppb/1\%$ absorption, were 0.058 ppb cadmium, 0. 15 ppb copper, 0.6 ppb lead, 1.2 ppb zinc and 0.01 ppb mercury respectively. No significant adsorption on the wall of polyethylene sample bottle occurred during 30 days of storing by acidification to pH 1.5 with nitric acid except zinc. Poor reproducibility was found for zinc with this method.
Zinc, cadmium, lead and copper were simultaneously determined by depositing metals at - 1.200 V vs. a Ag/AgCl(sat. KCl) reference electrode for 150 seconds on a hanging mercury drop electrode(HMDE) or a thin mercury film electrode(TMFE), followed by scanning towards anodic direction using differential pulse voltammetric(DPASV) and square wave voltammetric(SWASV) techniques. The linear calibration curves were obtained for four metal ions simultaneously determined by DPASV with a HMDE in the concentration range between 20 and 100 ppb. However, the linear calibration plots were obtained only for $Cd^{2+}$ and $Pb^{2+}$ in the simultaneous determinations with a TMFE in the concentration range up to 100 ppb using DPASV and up to 10 ppb using SWASV. DPASV with a TMFE was about 15 times more sensitive than DPASV with a HMDE for simultaneous determinations of $Cd^{2+}$ and $Pb^{2+}$. SWASV was about 5 times more sensitive than DPASV at a TMFE. Concentrations of zinc in seven different sediment samples determined by DPASV with a HMDE and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry were compared, resulting with an excellent correlation coefficient of 0.9993 and with no significant difference between two methods after t-test.
A neutron activation method has been developed for the simultaneous determination of chromium, iron, lanthanum, scandium and zinc in river-water samples. The sample is sealed in the silica ampoule without pretreatment and irradiated for a week at a thermal neutron flux of $1{\times}10^{13}n{\cdot}cm^{-2}{\cdot}sec^{-1}$. After cooling for about two days, the elements in the sample are sequentially extracted at different pH by 0.1M oxine-chloroform solution. The organic layers are checked by Gamma-ray spectrometry with $″3\;{\times}\;3″$ NaI (T1) detector connected to a 800-channel pulse hight analyzer. The ppb concentration of the elements in most of river-water samples could be determined by this method. The tracer study for the quantitative separation of the elements was also carried out.
Steel corrosion is one of the most critical deteriorations in concrete structures due to the problems associated with both durability and structural safety issues. For protection of steel against corrosion problems, researches to improve concrete durability and steel corrosion protection such as rebar coating by hot-dip galvanizing steel have been carried out. This study was performed to quantitatively evaluate anti-corrosion and structural performance of concrete structures reinforced with hot-dip galvanizing steel rebar. Preliminary tests for several metal coatings such as zinc, aluminum, and their alloy (Zn 45% + AL 55%) were performed. After evaluation of corrosive characteristics, Zn was selected for the coating material and the corrosion behaviors in Zn-coated steel were evaluated in various conditions. Furthermore, tensile and adhesive strengths were evaluated for the normal and the hot-dip galvanized steel. The crack patterns and structural behaviors of RC specimens with the normal and coated steel were investigated. Also, corrosion characteristics including corrosion in various coating metal and potential change in metal with notch were evaluated. Structural performances of tensile and adhesive strengths as well as RC beam behavior under flexural/shear loading were evaluated. The test and evaluation results showed that the applicability of hot-dip galvanized steel rebar can be used as corrosion resistant reinforcements for RC structures.

This study aimed to assess whether plant-based meat substitutes can effectively replace animal meat products in terms of amino acid composition and zinc bioavailability. The evaluation was conducted in response to the growing demand for meat substitutes, driven by the increasing vegan population and the expansion of vegan culture. For this purpose, a chicken product and two plant-based meat substitutes in tender form were selected. The amino acid content and composition were measured using HPLC, while the levels of trace elements like zinc and calcium were determined through ICP-AES. Additionally, the presence of phytic acid, which inhibits zinc bioavailability, was extracted and quantified using UV-Vis spectroscopy. The results were analyzed in the context of daily product consumption. The findings revealed that certain essential amino acids, such as valine and lysine, were found to be deficient in plant-based meat substitutes compared to animal meat products. It was challenging to meet the recommended daily intake of these amino acids solely through the use of meat substitutes. Regarding zinc bioavailability, the inhibitory effect of calcium on zinc bioavailability was expected to be minimal. The zinc bioavailability of the meat substitutes varied significantly depending on the zinc and phytic acid content of the ingredients. Therefore, ingredients of plant-based meat substitutes should be carefully modulated to reach appropriate zinc bioavailability by selecting and processing plant materials with high zinc and low phytic acid content.
The simultaneous determination of Zn, Cd, Pb and Cu in 1.000%(w/v) tungsten matrix by differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry at a hanging mercury drop electrode has been studied. Tartaric acid(pH=5.00) was used as a supporting electrolyte. Optimum analytical conditions were found that the deposition potential was -1.2 volt(vs. Ag/AgCl), the deposition time was 3 minutes. The linear concentration range of all trace metal ions in 1.000%(w/v) tungsten matrix were 10 to 50 ppb. And the detection limit(3${\sigma}$) of zinc, cadmium, lead and copper were 1.25, 1.02, 1.69, and 1.02 ppb respectively. This method was superior to the ICP-AES method which detection limits(3${\sigma}$) in 1.000%(w/v) tungsten matrix were 8.0, 5.0, 120 and 5 ppb respectively.
500 ml of a sample water was extracted with 10 ml of 0.01 % dithizone-$CHCl_3$three times. When $CHCl_3$ layer was back extracted with 10 ml of 0.1 N HCl containing mercuric ion, the free metal ions come into aqueous layer. The aqueous layer was added with 2 ml of 2 N KCl and was washed with 10 ㎖ of $CHCl_3$two times in order to remove the trace dithizone, and then was recorded square wave polarogram. The concentration of copper, lead and cadmium can be determined up to 3 ppb and that of zinc up to 14 ppb with an error of 10 %.
