Diamond film was deposited on Mo substrate at atmospheric pressure using a combustion flame apparatus with the addition of $H_2$. With the substrate temperature, the nucleation density of the substrate was increased. At temperatures above $1000^{\circ}C$, some of diamond was partly converted into graphite and etched by hydrogen atoms. With an increase of the $C_2H_2/O_2$ ratio, the nucleation density was increased. But crystals were cauliflower-shaped and a large number of amorphous carbon were deposited. With the addition of $H_2$, the nucleation density of diamond was increased by the improvement of surface activity. Diamond film of high crystallinity was deposited by etching amorphous carbon. With an increase of deposition time, the thickness of diamond film was increased.

In copper continuous casting, the soot, which is the incomplete pyrolitic product of acetylene, has been used as a mold coat. In this work, under constant acetylene pressure, the characteristics of soot and the optimum condition of sooting were investigated with different acetylene and oxygen flow rate. The soot particles deposited on the mold surface had mainly spherical shape and their sizes were about 20nm. After reaction with melt, their shapes were changed into polygonal type due to the graphitization. With increasing oxygen flow rate up to $0.6{\ell}/min$, the amount of residues of soot after heat treatment were kept nearly constant. But the amount of residues increased rapidly with further increasing oxygen flow rate. Degree of graphitization was maximum at $0.4{\ell}/min$ and $5{\ell}/min$ of oxygen and acetylene flow rate, respectively.
Cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) is a high-sensitive laser spectroscopic technique capable of measuring concentrations of trace gases. We have demonstrated a new design of the CRDS spectrometer with a continuous wave (CW) laser. The ring-dwon signal is produced through blocking the incident CW laser by scanning the cavity length fast toward off-resonance iwth PZT (piezoelectric transducer). We have also measured an absorption spectrum of acetylene overtone transitions near 570 nm at the pressure of 2700 Pa, and the minimum detectable absorption coefficient has been found to be about $3{\times}10^{-9}\cm^{-1}$.

Chemical modification of a dextran film to improve its physical properties was carried out by addition of plasticizers and crosslinking agents. Moreover, low-temperature plasma treatment with acetylene gas was done. The dextran film showed high mechanical strength but was brittle and vulnerable to moisture. When plasticizer was added, it became very soft but with large reduction of mechanical strength. However, a flexible film with fairly high mechanical strength and water resistance was prepared when the film was crosslinked by adding crosslinking agent with or after the addition of plasticizer. Treatment with an acetylene plasma changed the dextran film surface from hydrophilic to hydrophobic with little influence on the bulk properties of the film.

To investigate the effect of preparing condition on the physical properties of carbon nanotubes suitable for optical applications, carbon nanotubes were synthesized by thermal chemical vapor deposition using Ni particles as a catalyst on stainless steel substrate and acetylene as a reactant gas. To examine the physical and optical properties, SEM, TEM, Ram an, UV-visible, and photoluminescence spectroscopy were used. The physical properties of carbon nanotubes such as diameter, degree of growth density and morphology were closely related to such experimental conditions as Ni particle size, growing pressure, and etching condit on of Ni particles, it appeared from the light absorbance and photoluminescence spectra of carbon nanotube mixture prepared with an addition of a photopolymer, P3HT(Poly(3-hexylthIop hene)) that carbon nanotube could do a role as a kind of electron acceptor for solar cell application.
Polydiacetylene (PDA) is chemosensor materials that exhibit non-fluorescent-to-fluorescent transition as well as blue-to-red visible color change upon chemical or thermal stress. They have been studied in forms of film or microarray chip, so far. In this paper, we provide a novel technique to fabricate continuous micro-fiber PDA sensor using in-situ laser-polymerization technique and 3-D hydrodynamic focusing on a microfluidic chip. The flow of a monomer solution with diacetylene (DA) monomer is focused by a sheath flow on a 3-D microfluidic chip. The focused flow is exposed to 365 nm UV laser beam for in-situ polymerization which generates a continuous fiber containing DA monomers. Then, the fiber is exposed to 254 nm UV light to polymerize DA monomers to PDA. Preliminary results indicate that the fiber size can be controlled by the flow rates of the monomer solution and sheath flows and that a PDA sensor fiber successively responds to chemical and thermal stress.
