In this paper, we introduce a satellite conceptual design software which can be used for outlining a new satellite as well as for educational purpose. This software consists of three commercial tools: MATLAB, STK(Satellite Tool Kit), and Excel. The management of the design software is done by MATLAB which provides basic calculations, GUI(Graphical User Interface), Excel data base management, and STK control. STK, an orbital simulation software developed by AGI, takes a part of obtaining accurate orbital information of a satellite. Excel, a product of Microsoft, is used for the data base of previous satellites and for the saving place of temporary and final results of the software. The conceptual design of a satellite is to roughly estimate power system and mass. In the power system design, the sizes of solar array and battery are determined. Based on the database of existing satellites, we can estimate the subsystems's mass fraction of a target satellite. Design examples for Kompsat 1 and 2 are suggested for verification of the developed software.
The Earth's total magnetic field was calculated from on board TAM(Three-Axis Magnetometer) observations of KOMPSAT-1 satellite between June 19th and 21st, 2000. The TAM's telemetry data were transformed from ECI(Earth-Centered Inertial Frame) to ECEF(Earth-Centered Earth-Fixed Frame) and then to spherical coordination. Self-induced field from the satellite bus were removed by the symmetric nature of the magnetic field. The 2-D wavenumber correlation filtering and quadrant-swapping method were applied to eliminate the dynamic components and track-line noise. To test the validity of the TAM's geomagnetic field, ${\phi}$rsted satellite's magnetic model and IGRF2000 model were used for statistical comparison. The correlation coefficients between KOMPSAT-1/${\phi}$rsted and KOMPSAT-1/IGRF2000 models are 0.97 and 0.96, respectively. The global spherical harmonic coeffi-cient was then calculated from the KOMPSAT-1 data degree and order of up to 19 and compared with those from IGRF2000, $\phi$rsted, and CHAMP models. The KOMPSAT-1 model was found to be stable to degree & order of up to 5 and it can give new information for the low frequency components of the global geomagtic field.
Space is becoming more commercialized. Despite of its delayed start-up, space activities in Korea are attracting more nation-wide supports from both investors and government. May 25, 2023, KSLV II, also called Nuri, successfully transported, and inserted seven satellites to a sun-synchronous orbit of 550 km altitude. However, Starlink has over 4,000 satellites around this altitude for its commercial activities. Hence, it is necessary for us to constantly monitor the collision risks of these satellites against resident space objects including Starlink. Here we report a quantitative research output regarding the conjunctions, particularly between the Nuri satellites and Starlink. Our calculation shows that, on average, three times everyday, the Nuri satellites encounter Starlink within 1 km distance with the probability of collision higher than 1.0E-5. A comparative study with KOMPSAT-5, also called Arirang-5, shows that its distance of closest approach distribution significantly differs from those of Nuri satellites. We also report a quantitative analysis of collision-avoiding maneuver cost of Starlink satellites and a strategy for Korea, being a delayed starter, to speed up to position itself in the space leading countries. We used the AstroOne program for analyses and compared its output with that of Socrates Plus of Celestrak. The two line element data was used for computation.
It is possible to extract qualified ground control points (GCPs) from SAR data itself without published maps. TerraSAR-X data that are one of highest spatial resolution among civilian SAR systems is now available. In this study, a sophisticated method for GCP extraction from TerraSAR-X data was tested and the quality of the extracted GCPs was evaluated. Mean values of the distance errors were 0.11m and -3.96 m with standard deviations of 6.52 m and 5.11 m in easting and northing, respectively. The result is one of the best among GCPs possibly extracted from any civilian remote sensing systems. The extracted GCPs were used for geo-rectification of IKONOS image. The method used in this study can be applied to KOMPSAT-5 for geo-rectification of high-resolution optic images acquired by KOMPSAT-2 or follow-up missions.
This report summarizes the results of MODTRAN model that are used for the calculation of input radiance of the KOMPSAT-2 Multispectral Camera (MSC). We have calculated the input radiances for four months: January 15, April 15, July 15 and October 15. Annual averages are the arithmetic mean of results from four months. We used the mid-latitude winter and summer for the month of January and July, respectively, while US standard atmospheres are used for April and October. The orbital characteristics of KOMPSAT-2 and the seasonal variations of solar zenith angle over the Korean peninsula were incorporated as inputs to the model. The tropospheric aerosol extinction (visibility = 50 km) was assumed. The surface albedo used in the model calculation represents the global annual mean clear-sky albedo. MSC contract values are found to be considerably greater in the MSC spectral range than the total radiances calculated with the above general conditions. From these results, it can be inferred that the forthcoming MSC images would be somewhat dark. We certainly need a countermeasure for this issue.

The accurate geo-referencing processes that apply ground control points is prerequisite for effective end use of HRSI (High-resolution satellite imagery). Since the conventional control point acquisition by human operator takes long time, demands for the automated matching to existing reference data has been increasing its popularity. Among many options of reference data, the airborne LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) data shows high potential due to its high spatial resolution and vertical accuracy. Additionally, it is in the form of 3-dimensional point cloud free from the relief displacement. Recently, a new matching method between LiDAR data and HRSI was proposed that is based on the image projection of whole LiDAR data into HRSI domain, however, importing and processing the large amount of LiDAR data considered as time-consuming. Therefore, we wmotivated to ere propose a local LiDAR chip generation for the HRSI geo-referencing. In the procedure, a LiDAR point cloud was rasterized into an ortho image with the digital elevation model. After then, we selected local areas, which of containing meaningful amount of edge information to create LiDAR chips of small data size. We tested the LiDAR chips for fully-automated geo-referencing with Kompsat-2 and Kompsat-3 data. Finally, the experimental results showed one-pixel level of mean accuracy.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the ortho image quality change according to the generation technique of Digital Elevation Model(DEM) based on the digital map. First of all, two different types of DEM were generated using contour layer(Case1), contour layer and altitude layer(Case2) from the digital map on the scale of 1/5,000. After generating and evaluating two types of DEM, KOMPSAT-2 ortho images were generated by using them. In conclusion, Case2 DEM was more effective to use in the slope and switchback area, on the other hand, Case1 DEM was much better than Case2 DEM for preventing a topographic distortion in flat area.

This paper had a purpose on analyzing result data from pan-sharpening, which have applied on the KOMPSAT-2 and -3 image. Particularly, the study focused on comparing each relative spectral response functions, which considers to cause color distortions of fused image. Two images from same time and location have been collected by KOMPSAT-2 and -3 to apply in the experiment. State-of-the-art algorithms of GIHS, GS1, GSA and GSA-CA were employed for analyzing the results in quantitatively and qualitatively. Following analysis of previous studies, GSA and GSA-CA methods resulted excellent quality in both of KOMPSAT-2/3 results, since they minimize spectral discordances between intensity and PAN image by the linear regression algorithm. It is notable that performances from KOMPSAT-2 and- 3 are not equal under same circumstances because of different spectral characteristics. In fact, KOMPSAT-2 is known as over-injection of low spatial resolution components of blue and green band, are greater than that of the PAN band. KOMPSAT-3, however, has been advanced in most of misperformances and weaknesses comparing from the KOMPSAT-2.
