  • This study investigated the effects of Origanum majorana essential aroma therapy on electrical activity in the brain as evaluated by an electroencephalogram (EEG). The subjects were 29 healthy female young adults, and their sleep quality was assessed by using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. EEG electrodes were attached at the frontal, temporal, occipital, and parietal lobes according to the international 10-20 system. Subjects were exposed to organic Origanum majorana essential aroma (50 ${\mu}l$) for a period of 3 minutes each before, during, and after aromatherapy. Subjects with good sleep quality showed that Origanum majorana essential aroma increased the theta power at the frontal and temporal lobes of both cerebral hemispheres, the left parietal lobe, and the right occipital lobe. Furthermore, Origanum majorana essential aroma decreased the alpha power at the left occipital lobe and the beta power at the right temporal lobe. On the other hand, subjects with poor sleep quality showed an increase in the theta power at the temporal lobe of both cerebral hemispheres and a decrease in the alpha power at the left parietal lobe by Origanum majorana essential aroma therapy. It is concluded that Origanum majorana essential aroma therapy diminishes the state of wakefulness in the brain; alpha and beta powers were both decreased in the subjects with good sleep quality, but only alpha power was decreased in the subjects with poor sleep quality. Moreover, Origanum majorana essential aroma therapy has a sleep-inducing effect in both subjects with good sleep quality and poor sleep quality.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of using aroma essential oils on allergic symptoms, eosinophils and quality of life related to rhinitis for university students with allergic rhinitis. Methods: A randomized controlled experimental design was used. There were 37 participants in the experimental group, and 30 in the control group. The experimental group applied the essential oils four times a day in the nasal area as well as using inhalation of the oils each night for four weeks. Rhinoconjunctivitis quality of life questionnaire was composed of 28 questions regarding seven areas associated with allergic reactions. The data were analyzed with SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. Results: Rhinitis symptom index, nose itching (p<.001), sneezing (p<.001), watery rhinorrhea (p<.001), and nose congestion (p<.001) all had significant difference for the participants in the treatment group. Further there were significant differences in eosinophils both for measured time and interaction (p<.001). For the quality of life related to rhinitis, the results showed significant difference (p<.001). Conclusion: Using aroma therapy by applying essential oils turned out to be an effective nursing intervention that can be utilized in the easing of allergic symptom and the decrease of eosinophils, causing improvement in the quality of life related to rhinitis.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of aroma foot reflexology massage on mood states specifically depression and brain waves of elderly women with osteoarthritis. Methods: The study was a nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design. The participants were 62 elderly women with osteoarthritis. The instruments were the Korean-Profile of Mood States-Brief for mood states and 8-channel EEG (Electroencephalogram) system for brain waves. Data were collected from March to May, 2012. Twenty-six participants were assigned to the treatment group and twenty-six to the comparison group. The data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 17.0 version program, and included descriptive statistics, t-test, and ANCOVA. The intervention was conducted three times a week for two weeks. Results: There were significantly improvement in reported depression. s. Brain waves (EEG) increased significantly in F3, T3 of ${\alpha}$ wave and in F4, T3, and P4 of ${\beta}$ wave between the two groups. Conclusion: Aroma foot reflexology massage can be utilized as an effective intervention to decrease depression of mood states, increase of ${\alpha}$, and ${\beta}$ brain wave on woman elderly with osteoarthritis.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of aroma inhalation therapy on stress, anxiety, depression, and an autonomic nervous system reaction in high-risk hospitalized pregnant women. Methods: A quasiexperimental study used a non-equivalent control group non-synchronized design. Fifty high-risk hospitalized pregnant women were selected as participants on delivery room and maternity ward at university hospital. Twenty-five were selected for the experimental group while 25 were assigned to a control group. Neroli essential oil was used for aroma therapy and was already identified as not being hazard to pregnant women. It provided emotional stability from previous study. The participants inhaled Neroli 2 minutes, 3 times (9 am to 10 am, 4 pm to 5 pm, just before sleep) a day. A total of 15 sessions were held from the day of the preliminary investigation. Pre and post written survey and measuring an autonomic nervous system reaction were collected from both groups. Results: The data were analyzed by $x^2$ test, t-test, and paired t-test. There was a statistically significant difference in stress (t=-3.98, p<.001) between the experimental group and the control group. Conclusion: These findings indicate that aroma inhalation therapy is effective as a nursing intervention for the stress relief of hospitalized high-risk pregnant women.

The data collection period was from November 14, 2022 to December 19, 2022. A questionnaire consisting of stress, pain, depression, and blood pressure was measured before and after the aroma roll-on inhalation intervention. The components of aroma essential oil included Marjoram, Geranium, Peppermint and Orange sweet that were diluted in Jojoba oil which was the carrier oil. The aroma inhalation method with roll-on was carried out 3 times day for 4 weeks. In the result of this study, the aroma inhalation method with roll-on were statistically significant differences in stress(t=2.63, p=.013), pain(t=2.46, p=.019), and systolic blood pressure(t=3.01, p=.005) of the participants. Therefore, aroma roll-on therapy is expected to be available as a useful nursing intervention method for reducing stress, relieving pain, and managing blood pressure in the elderly using the senior citizen clubs.

  • The purpose of this study was to meta-analyze the stress intervention program applied to patients with hemodialysis in Korea to confirm the effectiveness of the stress intervention program and to identify the characteristics and trends of the stress intervention method. A total of 10 studies were selected, and Quality Assessment tool was used MINORS and the data was analyzed using Comprehensive Meta Analysis Version 3.0 and Review manager version 5.3 The Quality Assessment score of studies was 21.2 points, and the effect size on the psychological stress was medium(g=-.72), and the effect size on cortisol of the physiological stress was also medium(g=-.52). Subgroup analysis showed that Music therapy and aromatherapy, individual providing, over 60 minutes per session and total of 10-20 times were more effectively reduced stress. Findings of this meta-analysis would be helpful for health professionals to provide more effective stress intervention program. Further randomized controlled trials of stress intervention program for patients with hemodialysis are more needed.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the inhibitory effect of the aroma therapy of three kinds of aroma oil mixtures on asthma. 1. The percentage of granulocytes/lymphocytes population in mouse OVA-induced asthma lung cells was decreased significantly compared with those of control group. 2. The number of CCR3+ cells, CD4+ cells, CD8+ cells, CD23 and CD3e+/CD69+ in lungs of the mice group treated with M1 were decreased significantly compared with those of control group. 3. The number of IgE+/B220+ cells in the lungs of the mice group treated with M1 decreased significantly compared with those of control group. But the number of B220+ cells in the lunes of the mice group treated with M1 didn't show significant difference compared with those of control group. 4. The number of Gr-1+/CD11b+ cells in lungs of the mice group treated with M1 didn't show significant difference compared with those of control group. But the number of CD11b+ cells in lungs of the mice group treated with M1 decreased significantly compared with those of control group.
