  • This study explores children's images in The Children's News, a children's newspaper during the Liberation period. For this purpose, frequency analysis, topic modeling, and time series analysis were performed from the first issue of December 1, 1945 to the 86 issue of December 13, 1947, except for No. 34, which was not passed down. As a result of frequency analysis, keywords related to country, school, and family appeared frequently, and through topic modeling, children's images were observed in these topics, including children with patriotism, children with scientific literacy, children with artistic refinement, and children as social beings. The time series analysis results show that the percentage of patriotism-related topics was high during the early days of the Liberation period when The Children's News were published, but as the ratio of topics such as science and art gradually increased, it was confirmed that the image of children was diversified.

  • This study explores and compares how rural teachers and Chinese newspapers representing the dominant ideology of the state and the local government construct left behind children's problems and solutions. I draw on teacher interviews in two rural schools and the reports of three major Chinese newspapers (2011 to 2015). Teacher and media narratives largely agreed that parental absence and negative mental health consequences were the biggest source of the problem, placing the blame largely on families. However, the narratives diverged when discussing solutions as teachers largely sought institutional structural solutions while the media emphasized the individual role that volunteers could play. School-based activities and teachers' contributions extensively discussed in teacher interviews were muted from newspaper reports that emphasized contributions from government officials and local representatives.

  • The purpose of this study is to critically review recent discourse on aging appeared in Korean newspapers. For this purpose, 1,725 articles on 'aging' or 'elderly' appeared on three major Korean newspapers during 1997- 2006 are analyzed. It is shown that there is a recent surge of articles portraying the positive images of aging in Korean newspapers emphasizing the importance of productive, successful aging and active life style of the elderly. This trend is a welcomed change from the negative images of elderly as dependent burden of society. However, it seems that over emphasis on positive aging and 'New Elderly' might have created another stereotype about the elderly and unintentionally marginalize the certain group of the elderly. By focusing on individual responsibility, it also overlooked the constraints imposed by social structure on disadvantaged elderly group, such as women, elderly in low socio-economic strata. Theoretical and policy implications of this trends are discussed.

  • Children's use of the Internet is growing. Each company collects children's personal information. However, it is also difficult for children to recognize the concept of personal information. In this study, based on the analysis of newspaper children's personal information leakage, we investigated the occurrence of personal information leakage in children through ground theory, one of qualitative research methods used in the social science field. The ground theory is thought to be able to derive a causal relationship by identifying the leakage of children's personal information. As a result of the study, it was collected through the consent of the legal representative, but depending on the situation, the consent process was not performed. Even with the consent, it was found that due to insufficient measure to protect personal information, various situation(criminal damage, anxiety, embarrassment, anger, etc.) occurred the legal representative. As a result, children's personal information collection providers paid fines according to the situation.
