  • Since the Child Friendly Cities Initiative(CFCI), a UNICEF-led initiative, was first introduced to Seongbuk-gu in 2013, more than half of the districts of Seoul are making efforts to achieve the accreditation of the Child Friendly City(CFC). At this point, when an initiative is transformed from a special policy of a few districts into a general policy of many local governments, we need to examine and check on how friendly urban parks are to children. This study focused on neighborhood parks that tend to be less friendly to children as compared to children's parks and looked into the current status, because neighborhood parks are also well used by users of all ages including children. The evaluation criteria was developed based on the review of domestic and international guidelines of child friendly parks and neighborhood parks. Futhermore, field studies, user questionnaire, and a participatory design workshop were introduced to analyze the status of child-friendly environment of neighborhood parks. Findings are as follows. First, vague definitions of child cause the inconsistency of child-related policies. Second, Neighborhood parks are not conceived as a public space for children. Third, the consideration of youth is relatively low. Fourth, adjacent area of a park turns out not to be child friendly as well.

  • The objective of this study was to examine the mediating effects of school adjustment on the relationship between social capital and self-reliance of adolescents in out-of-home care(institutional care, foster care, and group homes). For this study, a total of 358 middle and high school students(13 to 19 years) were recruited among adolescents in care nationwide. Collected data were analyzed by using the structural equation modeling analysis. A bootstrapping method was utilized to examine the mediating effects. The results showed that social capital of the adolescents in out-of-home care was not directly related to self-reliance. However, complete mediation was found through school adjustment in the relationship between social capital and self-reliance. This indicates that social capital of the adolescents in care was significantly related to self-reliance only through school adjustment. Based on the results, policy and practice implications for increasing the levels of social capital, school adjustment, and self-reliance of adolescents in care were discussed.

  • Objectives : This study aims to compare the mental health of adolescents living in child care institutions (orphanages) and youth shelters, to provide basic data for appropriate psychiatric interventions for each facilities. Methods : The sample consisted of 157 adolescents in child care institutions and 31 adolescents in Youth Shelters who completed the Korean version of the Youth Self Report (K-YSR). We compared the K-YSR scores between the two groups and also examined factors related to suicidality. Results : Adolescents in youth shelters were older and had higher rates of drinking (p<0.001), smoking (p<0.001), and "abnormal sleep" (p=0.007) than adolescents in child care institutions. They also showed higher 'suicidality' (p=0.004) and K-YSR scores. On the other hand, adolescents in child care institutions have lower 'suicidality', but they have higher 'suicidality' when they have 'abnormal sleep' (OR 4.194; p=0.006), 'abnormal diet' (OR 2.503; p=0.010), and 'concerns about weight gain' (OR 2.503; p=0.010). Additionally, 17.6% of participants in the study showed 'suicidality'. The 'suicidality' group had a higher overall K-YSR score than the non-suicidal group, and had higher 'abnormal sleep' (OR 3.766; p=0.014) and 'concern about weight gain' (OR 2.864; p=0.032). Conclusions : Adolescents in youth shelters appear to have more serious clinical difficulties than adolescents in child care institutions, so prompt psychiatric intervention is needed. Additionally, it is necessary to consider mental health assessments including suicidality when adolescents in child care institutions complain of sleep, eating, or weight gain problems.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the publication trends of children and adolescents' smoking-related researches published in Korean academic journals. Three hundred fifty papers published until 2018 were analyzed by focusing on the publication year, research participants, research themes and research methods. As a result, smoking-related research on children and adolescents increased sharply from 1995 to 2000, and the trend continued. The main research participants were general children and adolescents and the most frequently studied themes were 'Associated Factors,' 'Intervention,' 'Prevalence,' 'Prevention,' 'Characteristics,' 'Law and Policies,' 'Scales,' 'Review and Theories' respectively. The most frequently used research method was the quantitative method. Moreover, the most common data gathering method was using questionnaires, and the number of papers which used panel data was gradually increasing. Future studies were suggested to explore a broader range of themes, and a balanced research approach was also recommended using both qualitative and mixed methods.
