  • The purpose of this study was to analysis of the changes of the white noise on the change of the writing ability and hand function of the children with the intellectual disabilities and then provide the basic information about that. The subjects was 12 children with intellectual disabilities. White noise was applied to analyze the subjects' writing ability and hand function before and after application. The provision of the white noise was continuous and uniform through the white noise generator. The analysis of the writing ability was performed by using the KNISE-BAAT assessment and the writing, vocabulary and composing ability were evaluated for the writing ability of the subjects. Also, the analysis of the hand function was performed by using the pegboard sub-item of the Manual Function Test. The results of the writing ability showed the statistically significant increase of the writing and vocabulary ability, but in the case of the composing ability, there was no statistically significant increase in the composing ability. Also, the results of the hand function showed the statistically significant increase in the both hands. The use of the white noise should be considered as a compensatory approach to improve the writing ability and hand function of the children with intellectual disabilities. Also, in order to improve the level of the performance, learning level, and academic achievement of the children of the intellectual disabilities, the application of the white noise in the living and learning environment should be needed to consider.

  • This study aimed to investigate beginner-level learners' use of translators in L2 writing, and shed light on its validity in writing performance through their responses on the necessity, reliability and limitation of machine translation. 117 university students from beginner-level L2 writing classes participated in the survey. Additionally, 11 of them were interviewed about their answers. The survey and interview data revealed varying viewpoints such as reliability and effects as well as reasons for choosing translator-assisted writing. The vast majority(76.1%) used web-based machine translators for their writing activities, and employed various strategies to help their insufficient L2 skills and to increase their motivation and confidence. On the other hand, they exhibited its detrimental effects including it could lead to plagiarism, and interfere with the learning process unless they post-edited the given translation. However, translators were viewed as a new, efficient, and valid educational tool for effective and successful L2 writing.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of narrative and expository texts on incidental vocabulary learning of Korean university EFL learners while reading. The experimental groups were divided into 3 groups. The first experimental group were exposed to narrative texts and second group received expository texts. And the third group were administered narrative and expository texts alternately. The vocabulary tests were conducted after the last session to assess the incidental vocabulary gains of the learners. The results indicated the superiority of the expository texts over narratives in terms of enhancing learners' incidental acquisition of unknown words. Moreover, the results showed that the blended reading group of expository and narrative texts did better on the vocabulary gains than those of narrative reading group and expository reading group. However, in the essay writing assessment, the expository group committed the most vocabulary errors in writing.

  • This study has two purposes. First, it aims to suggest an appropriate approach to English writing education for Korean high school students in a cooperative learning situation. It also aims to suggest what type of learner grouping, either homogeneous or heterogeneous, is appropriate by comparing the learners' writing abilities and the changes of their affective factors after being exposed to cooperative EFL writing instruction. Two homogeneous classes were selected and instructed to write in English for 11 weeks. One was composed of homogeneous small groups based on the students' writing scores, and the other was composed of heterogeneous small groups, again based on the students' writing scores. The results showed that the improvement between the two class types was quite different across different proficiency levels. For example, although there is little difference between the homogeneous and the heterogeneous classes of low and intermediate-level learners in writing ability improvement, high-level students showed a significant difference between the classes. In addition, it was found that class participation correlated significantly to writing ability improvement. Cooperative learning was proved to be an effective writing instructional approach to encourage learners' interest and increase their self-confidence; however, the results did not show any significant differences in learners' affective domain between the homogeneous and the heterogeneous classes. Similarly, the learners' grouping preference was not affected by the grouping method.

  • The purpose of this study was to design and develop a multimedia program for elementary school students' emergent literacy teaching. The program aims at helping students improve their reading ability and enhance their letter decoding ability through drill-and-practice as well as tutorial instructional strategies. To that end, the instructional materials were reorganized so as to provide a basic syllable table and writing examples with standard pronunciation. The multimedia program is composed of three sections: basic literacy teaching, advanced literacy teaching, and evaluation sections. The implications of the study were discussed.

  • This study investigated the effects of varying visuals in drawing and writing as methods to assist students in connecting and integrating multiple external representations provided in learning the particulate nature of matter. Seventh graders (N=233) at a coed middle school were assigned to control, static drawing (SO), dynamic drawing (DD), static writing (SW), and dynamic writing (DW) groups. The students were taught about "Boyle's Law" and "Charles's Law" for two class periods. Two-way ANCOVA results revealed that the scores of a conception test for the two drawing (SD, DD) groups and the two writing (SW, DW) groups were significantly higher than those for the control group. Within the writing groups, students of lower spatial visualization ability in the DW group scored significantly higher than those in the SW group. However, no significant differences were found in the scores of the conception test for the two drawing (SD, DD) groups regardless of students' visualization ability. Researchers also found that most students in both DD and DW groups had respectively positive perceptions of dynamic visuals in drawing or writing.

  • This is a literature review study on personality traits' role in language learning. Personality traits play an important role in language learning. In order to review research outcomes in recent studies, articles related to language learning and personality traits were collected through research databases such as ProQuest, Google Scholar, and EBSCO. Based on the analysis of collected literature, this study revealed that extraversion and openness to experience are the personality traits leading to the successful language learning. More specifically, extraversion was related to speaking skills while openness to experience was related to listening. It is also important to note which learning strategies are more likely to be utilized in second language learning and personality traits that are more likely to use them. These findings focus on writing skills, listening skills, and speaking skills. Further studies in the field are suggested.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of small group discussion on elementary students' science writing. In this study, four 6th grade students were chosen from an elementary school in Seoul. Students were involved in eight science writing classes and the contents of a small group discussion and interactions were recorded and observed. Students' science works were collected and analysed based on three domains: scientific thinking, logic and originality. The result of this study showed that the contents of a small group discussion greatly affected the scientific thinking domain. A low-achieving student received lots of help from a high-achieving student. It was easy to improve in the logic domain through the science writing classes. Average students got good grades in an originality domain when the subject was related to their real life. A small group discussion would have an effect on science writing ability positively if the students acquired proper guidance on the procedure and manner of discussion. The science writing lesson would be more effective if the learning group was organized homogeneously in the aspects of intelligence achievement and interpersonal relationships.

  • As Chinese characters occupies more than 70% of words we currently use, the education of Chinese characters is becoming important day by day to accurately deliver the meaning of words in our language life. In recent, there are increasing concerns on writing Chinese characters correctly as well as reciting, books and Internet contents on Chinese character writing is emerging. However, currently available Internet media on the Chinese characters education only illuminates recitation and interpretation. Moreover, the writing part is merely provided in the form of paper by printing the characters, thus, writing materials are insufficient. In this paper, we propose a design and implementation of Web based Chinese characters writing system. Using the system, a user can write Chinese characters with mouse device. The learning progress is accordingly managed for the user. In addition, the proposed system can be used any place in where Internet is connected.
