  • Foaming of slag is a thermodynamically unstable phenomenon and has significant effects in iron and steelmaking processes. For better recycling method of pulp sludge, the application as an defoaming agent during steelmaking process was adopted and tested. The forming machine has been modified in order to produce the briquettes, which are made of pulp sludge and slag with different weight ratio. Influencing factors on the foaming phenomena have been studied and tested for better understanding of foaming phenomena. Experiments were carried out with $CaO-FeO-SiO_2$ based slags with Ar gas injection and addition of coke particles. The slag basicity and (%FeO) contents adapted as major factors to treasure foaming tendency of the slag system. It was found that foam index (${\Sigma}$) gradually decreased as both the basicity and the (FeO) content increase. Four kinds of antifoaming agent such as aluminium dross, cokes, rice bran and pulp sludge with steelmaking slag have been tested in actual process. Aluminium dross was the most effective, and pulp sludge with steelmaking slag also showed the desired results.

  • This study was conducted using 8-year-old 'Niitaka' (Pyrus pyriforia) pear trees to investigate the effect of different organic fertilizers on fruit quality and level of total phenolicsin a conventionally managed orchard. Trees were treated with one of five different fertilizers: 1) control (60 g of chemical fertilizer [16N-11P-12K] per tree) 2) rice bran (RB, 10 kg per tree); 3) coffee bran compost (CBC, 10 kg per tree); 4) chitin-incubated compost (CIC, 10 kg per tree); or 5) RCC (RB+CBC+CIC, 30 kg per tree). Soluble solid content, hardness, and titratable acidity were significantly higher in fruit from RCC-treated trees compared with fruit from trees exposed to other treatments. Overall, control fruit had smaller stones and lower calcium concentration than had organically fertilized fruit. Also, control fruit showed a reduced level of total phenolic compounds and lower antioxidant activity in both peel and flesh than did organically fertilized fruit. Compost-treated trees yielded fruit of enhanced edibility and with longer shelf-life owing to a reduction in stone size and increased calcium concentration, respectively. Overall, fruit from trees treated with organic fertilizers was of higher quality and had greater antioxidant levels compared with fruit from trees treated with chemical fertilizer.

Antioxidant Compounds and Antioxidant Activities of Ethanol Extracts from Milling By-products of Rice Cultivars (벼 품종별 도정 부산물 에탄올 추출물의 항산화 성분 및 항산화 효과)

  • This study was conducted to determine antioxidant compounds and antioxidative activities of by-products including rice bran and half-crashed rice by rice milling. DPPH, ABTS radical scavenging activities and reducing power have been used to investigate the relative antioxidative activities of 70% EtOH extracts from by-products. The contents of total polyphenol, total flavonoid and $\gamma$-oryzanol in EtOH extracts were measured by spectrophotometric methods, and vitamin E was carried out by HPLC. Ethanol extract from rice bran showed markedly antioxidative activity than that from half-crushed rice. Among EtOH extracts from milling by-products, rice bran of 'Hongjiju' tended to have the most effective antioxidative activity compared to the others. These results suggested that by-products of rice milling have the potent antioxidative activity and these activity are partly due to the antioxidative compounds present in by-products including rice bran and half-crushed rice.

  • As a primary study on the economic injury level of A. tokionis larval populations in tobacco fields, we carried out some experiments for the evaluation of sampling efficiency of 3 sampling methods (pit-fall traps of apple pomace and rice bran, and clover patches) for the larval population and the regressions between loss and infested larval density The $10\times10cm$ clover patch showed a better sampling efficiency $11.8\;to\;18.0\%$ than the others. The sampling efficiency of clover patch becomes higher when the plots did not have any green plants. The linear regression equation (Y=4.2+1.383x) between loss (Y:kg/10a) and infested larval density (X: no. of larvae/plot) which was obtained by substitution of damage ratio and corrected damage ratio fitted the observed data better than the one (Y=2.68X) obtained without substitioning.

  • The present study was carried out to evaluate the preparation of the fermented milks with rice bran and to prove that the bacteria used are necessary for providing amino acids in this process. The rice bran on fermented milk with Streptococcus thermophilus (ST-body1) and Lactobacillus casei (LC-10). The fermentation limit was set until acidimetry score reaches 1. There are reports of titratable acidity, pH, viable cell count and amounts of organic acids affecting amino acid production about physical and chemical analysis measured using HPLC. Finally, sensory test was surveyed. In this study, the rate of acidification was higher in the fermented milk with rice bran than in the common fermented milk. In case of the number of cells was $1.0{\times}10^8CFU/mL$ in group. The lactic acid and citric acid content in yogurts prepared with rice bran using Streptococcus thermophilus (ST-body1) and Lactobacillus casei (LC-10) was higher than that in the control yogurt. Amino acids derived by rice bran were effected in fermentation for each bacteria's necessary amino acid production, and it made bacteria growth larger. From the physical test of the fermented milk with rice bran, flavor, texture, sweetness, overall taste of the fermented milk of Streptococcus thermophilus (ST-body1) were found to be much better than those of the other groups. The results obtained for the fermented milk prepared with rice bran using Streptococcus thermophilus (ST-body1) are significant.

  • Various enzymes produced by the Basidiomycetes, i.e. Pleurotus ostreatus, Pholiota nameko and Flammulina velutipes have been analysed. The purpose of the analyses is to produce a nutritious fertilizer from saw dust, sweet potato stems, corn stems and barley stems which are known as the farm product waste materials. The results of the analyses are as follows: 1. In order for P. ostreatus, Pho. nameko and F. velutipes to grow properly, the saw dust of broad-leaved trees, poplar and chestnut were mixed with sweet-potato stems, corn stems and barley straws at the ratio of $42{\sim}49\;:\;30$, and then to this mixture was added rice bran at the ratio of $18{\sim}35\;:\;30$ The following proved to be optimum conditions for the growth in this test: the parcentage of water content $60{\sim}70%$, $24{\sim}26^{\circ}C$ degrees of temperature. 2. We analyzed the fiber contained in the above materials after 20 days growth in various media. We found out that the fiber was decomposed up to $47{\sim}50%$ and polysaccharified. Lignin was decomposed up to $20{\sim}25%$ and about three times as much protein was contained in the product as in the original materials. 3. Our analyses revealed the possibility of producing concentrated feed from the crude fiber.

  • The main challenges for the development of agricultural bio-degradable mulching film concern the degradation during the lifetime of cultivated crops. A set of rice by-product (rice-hull and rice-bran) based bio-degradable mulching films was developed and tested, following the measurement of standard bio-degradability rate and adaptability in a large scale field experiment. The standard bio-degradability of bio-film passed the KS (Korea standard) regulation. The result of mechanical analysis of bio-degradable mulching film presented a higher mechanical strength and elongation rate compared with polyethylene film. In addition, bio-film could be degraded into fragments within 4 months under the field condition of several upland crops. Bio-degradable mulching film indicated great potential as a new source of agricultural bio-degradable material.

Effects of Organic Liquid Fertilizer Fertigation on Growth and Fruit Quality of Hot Pepper (유기액비 관비가 고추 생육 및 과실 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • The present study was carried out to evaluate the effects of organic liquid fertilizer (OLFs) fertigation on the growth and fruit quality of hot pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) cv. 'Nokkwang (Seminis Korea)'. Treatments were given with control (chemical feritilzer), OLF I(fowl dropping : fish meal : soybean meal, 2:1:1), OLF II(fowl dropping : bone meal : soybean meal, 2:1:1), OLF III(fowl dropping : bone meal, 1:1), and OLF IV(fowl dropping : rice bran : soybean meal, 2:1:1). The composition ratio of OLF based on weight to weight. The pH and EC of OLFs according to different material and compositions ranged from 6.5 to 6.8, and from 2.91 to $3.69dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, respectively. The C/N ratio was the highest as 5.75 in OLF Ⅳ, and there was no difference among the treatments in C/N ratio of the exception of OLF IV. In OLF IV total fruit weight was the highest as 1,558g per plant and total fruit number increased as 23.7% compared to control. The content of capsaicin in the ripened pepper increased with OLF I and II treatments, and decreased with OLF III and IV treatments compared to control of $662mg{\cdot}kg^{-1}$, but the soluble solid content was the highest with OLF IV treatment as $10.0^{\circ}Brix$.

Selection of Useful Organic Materials as an Additional Fertilizer for Organic Red-pepper Production and the Application Effect (유기농 고추 추비용 유기자원 선발 및 시용효과)

  • This study was conducted to select some effective organic materials for supplying mineral nutrients at the later red-pepper growing period under organic farming system, and to evaluate the application effect. Nutritional characteristics of organic materials, nitrogen release pattern during liquefying the selected organic materials, and crop growth were examined. Among 18 organic materials, meals such as soybean, rapeseed, cottonseed, and sunflower seed except for gluten had greater nitrogen content. Total nitrogen content liquefied solution of the mixture of organic materials and molasses or yogurt was measured after 7 days of the liquefying, thereafter, the mixture of rapeseed meal and yogurt showed the highest nitrogen, reaching about $3,000mg\;L^{-1}$. Selected liquid manure, mixture of rapeseed meal and yogurt, was applied 8 times to red-pepper plants with fertigation or foliar application. Total nitrogen of leaves at 150 days after transplanting was the highest (4.4%) in the treatment of foliar application of the selected liquid manure, whereas shoot dry weight and fresh fruit yield were the greatest in the treatment of fertigation.
