The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyse the revised contents of the history class in the Korean Decimal Classification(KDC), 5th edition, and then identify problems and propose the revised contents for the KDC, 6the edition. Major analysed areas are divided into four. First, geographic area table is discussed. It includes extension of the geographic area table, emphasis of hierarchical structure in the geographical area, revision of North Korean geographical names, extension of subgeographical structure of major nations in the world, and revision of nations in the central and west Asia. Second, Korean time period is extended. Third, the notes of entries of the Chinese and Japanese history areas are shorten. Fourth, the geographical and personal names are changed their native pronunciation, specially Chinese and Japanese. For the revision of the KDC, 6th edition, four areas are discussed: first, Korean geographic areas would be categorized by broaden area, second, the areas are arranged from the capital of the nation to others, third, foreign geographical names would be used their native names, and last, time period would be categorized by years.

In this paper we emphasize the introduction of ‘incommensurability’ on the teaching and learning the irrational number because we think of the origin of number as ‘ratio’. According to Greek classification of continuity as a ‘never ending’ divisibility, discrete number and continuous magnitude belong to another classes. That is, those components were dealt with respectively in category of arithmetic and that of geometry. But the comparison between magnitudes in terms of their ratios took the opportunity to relate ratios of magnitudes with numerical ratios. And at last Stevin coped with discrete and continuous quantity at the same time, using his instrumental decimal notation. We pay attention to the fact that Stevin constructed his number conception in reflecting the practice of measurement : He substituted ‘subdivision of units’ for ‘divisibility of quantities’. Number was the result of such a reflective abstraction. In other words, number was invented by regulation of measurement. Therefore, we suggest decimal representation from the point of measurement, considering the foregoing historical development of number. From the perspective that the conception of real number originated from measurement of ‘continuum’ and infinite decimals played a significant role in the ‘representation’ of measurement, decimal expression of real number should be introduced through contexts of measurement instead of being introduced as a result of algorithm.

The purpose of this study aims to provide possible suggestions for the improvement KDC 5th ed. as a system. After analyzing and evaluating various devices of KDC 5th ed. such as schedules, common auxiliary tables, internal tables(omitted), notes, relative index, precedence order(omitted), alternatives, manual(omitted) and relocated table(omitted), suggestions for the improvement were proposed. If above suggestions are adopted, effective literature classification scheme which is suited to domestic circumstances will be certainly prepared.

Korean Library Association brought out the fourth revised and enlarged edition of KDC last year. Compared with the former edition It Is a marked improvement. Neverthless, it leaves much room for improvement. In order to examine and evaluate the edition more effectively, I confined my study to the class 'Philosophy'. In my judgment the problem resolves itself into following three points: 1) Each regions, blanches of philosophy is not properly balanced. As is generally known KDC was originally derived from DDC. As a result KDC and DBC are similiar with regard to their stress on the philosophical tradition of the West. In consequence, it is lacking in universality. 2) The classifiers neglected on several occassions the logical regulations of classification. The vertical and horizontal relations between the subjects are not strictly respected. 3) The persons concerned were not well informed of philosophical conceptions and genealogies. There are some misused conceptions and disorganized genealogies of philosophy. To my knowledge these problems originate in the lack of professional understanding of philosophy necessary to make the work satisfactory As a result of the examination I came to the conclusion that it is inevitable for the classifiers, to ask to specialists in philosophy for mutual cooperation. Without their professional advices the classifiers will find difficulty in solving the problems and in improving the classification

This study suggests some ideas for the improvements of the classes of Language(700) and Literature(800) of the 4th Edition of Korean Decimal Classification(KDC). They includes some recommendations for the followings: introducing some new entries of the time table for the Korean Literature and English and American Literatures; relocating some entries for the improvements including language policy and administration; using new terminologies: adding new and revised notes for the appropriate entries; changing some specific classifying methods including the classification of bilingual dictionaries; introducing some options including those for the subdivisions of modern novels and those for American Literature; and discontinuing some entries not used, especially those in other Languages.

This study is intended to present methods improving the classification system of KDC architecture engineering fields after comparing and analyzing the academic system of architecture engineering, classification system of KDC, DDC, and LCC, and that of the research field classification system of National Research Foundation of Korea. The results of the analysis have revealed that it is required to improve and correct the KDC 5th edition of architectural engineering including the addition of classification items that reflect the trend of academic development, proper development in the rank classification terms of architectural structure engineering, addition of detailed subjects, selection of proper classification terms, errors of classification symbols and English expression, and omission of correlative indexes in the classification items. This study has proposed improved methods to solve those problems.

This study investigated general problems concerning the food and nutrition field in the KDC 4th edition based comparative analysis DOC, NDC, and Disciplinary Classification System of Korean Research Foundation, and suggested on some ideas for the improvements of them. Results of the study is summarized as follows. First, the knowledge classification of the food and nutrition field is divided by nutrition, food, and food service management. Second, the library classification of the food and nutrition field deals separately with nutrition and food, namely the nutrition is subdivided in medical science and food is subdivided in home economics. Third, the food and nutrition field in the KDC 4th edition had to be improved to use current terminology, to choose appropriate headings, and to subdivide the subjects more to introduce new topics.

This paper is intended to comparatively analyzed the KDC/NDC/DDC classification system for the field of civil engineering, the research field classification system of National Research Foundation of Korea, and the science and technology research field classification system of Korea Science and Engineering Foundation. And based on the analysis, it tried to propose the ways of improving the KDC classification system for the civil engineering field. As a result of the analysis, this paper has found that the KDC 5th-edition for the civil engineering field needed some corrections. That is, the classification items that reflect the trend of academic development should be added, the classification terminology of the basic theories of civil engineering should be properly developed, segmented topics should be added, any errors in classification codes and Korean/English descriptions should be corrected, and the omission of the KDC relative index of classification items should be solved. This paper proposed the ways of improving those problems.
