The earth retaining wall systems for excavation works in a populated urban area or a poor soil deposit can be limited due to various restriction. Thus there are various methods to be applied for them such as the soldier pile method, the diaphragm wall with counterfort and so on. In this study, the self-supported earth retaining wall using the DCM(Deep Cement Mixing) method, including its merits, demerits and some important characteristics occured in the design and the construction stage, was introduced. It might be reference for the other design and construction procedures using the DCM method.

This paper presents a study on the construction condition and environmental effect of deep soil mixing. Construction condition means the difference in unconfined compressive strength with respect to the depth and location of samples. Environmental effect means alkalinity diffused from soil stabilizer. The experimental results indicate that the unconfined compressive strength vary with respect to the depth, and doesn't show consistency pattern. So, in field application we must decide a mixing ratio enough to satisfy the least unconfined compressive strength. The difference in unconfined compressive strength with respect to the location of samples is negligible. The generation of alkalinity from soil stabilizer is reduced by permeating in non-improved soil and it is expected that the diffusion of alkalinity has no environmental effect on soil and ground water.

Demands for the automatic measurement on angle and depth of equipment were arisen for the better construction in deep mixing method and grouting method. Civil, geotechnical, electronic, and communication experts worked together for the development of automatic measuring devices using wire and wireless transmitting-receiving set. The results on the development of automatic devices in an industrial installation will be presented.
Generally, the effect of the cement deep mixing method on the improvement of clay ground is far greater than the effect of physical improvement. Although it leads to great improvement strength in the initial stage, there are not many constructional precedents in Korea and it is hard to manage quality according to the cement-clay mixing method. In order to figure out the strength characteristics according to the mixing ratio of cement, sand, and clay and the improvement characteristics of weak ground according to the forms of the specimens to be improved, marine clay was used in this study to conduct the uniaxial compression test and soil bin model test. The test piece specimens for the uniaxial compression test were mixed with sand in a fixed ratio with the criterion of the water cement ratio. The cement was mixed with clay in the ratios of 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40% to the clay weight. The moisture content of the soil ground was made in the ratios of 40%, 60%, and 80%. The test piece specimens went through curing by moistening for 7, 14, and 28 days and underwent the uniaxial compression test according to the curing period. For the bearing test, the soil bin models were made and the ground improved in the Mat type was formed. After that, the bearing strength was compared in this study according to the improvement ratio and analyzed the intervening effect between the walls of the improved specimens.

This study was conducted to compare the growth of Zoysia japonica depending on different soil treatments in Saemangeum sea dike, which is filled with dredged soil. Zoysia japonica was planted using sod-pitching method on the control plot. On plots which were treated with forest soil and soil improvement, Zoysia japonica seeds were sprayed mechanically. Sixteen months after planting, coverage rate, leaf length, leaf width, and root length were measured and analyzed. Also, three Zoysia japonica samples per plot were collected to analyze nutrient contents. Coverage rate was 100% in B treatment plot(dredged soil+$40kg/m^3$ soil improvement+forest soil), in C treatment plots (dredged soil+$60kg/m^3$ soil improvement+forest soil), and D treatment plots (dredged soil+$60kg/m^3$ soil improvement), while only 43% of the soil surface was covered with Zoysia japonica on control plots. The width of the leaf on C treatment plots (3.79mm) was the highest followed by D treatment (3.49mm), B treatment (2.40mm) and control plots (1.97mm). Leaf and root length of D treatment was 30.18cm and 13.18cm, which were highest among different treatments. The leaf length of D treatment was highest followed by C, B, and A treatments. The root length of D treatment was highest followed by C, A, and B treatments. The nitrogen and phosphate contents of the above ground part of Zoysia japonica were highest in C treatment, followed by D, B, and A treatments. The nitrogen and phosphate contents of the underground part of Zoysia japonica were highest in D treatment, followed by C, A, and B treatments. C and D treatments showed the best results in every aspect of grass growth. The results of this study could be used to identify the cost effective way to improve soil quality for soil surface fixation on reclaimed areas using grass species.
Among various construction methods, deep soil stabilization by chemical method have been widely used in order to improve soft ground. Dynamic variables using ground(such as sand, weathered granite soil and rock) -structure interaction design affected by dynamic load and cyclic load were studied a lot. However, there is something yet to learn about earthquake resistant design regarding reinforced ground by grout. Therefore, in this study using RC test, the correlation between shear strain and shear modulus with change of water content and injection rate in normal portland cement and clay was compared and analyzed by using Ramberg-Osgood model normalization As the result, dynamic coefficient was considerably affected by water content and grout injection rate.

Deep mixing method has been used for ground improvement and foundation system for embankment, port and harbor foundations, retaining wall, and liquefaction mitigations. It has attractive benefits because it is not only improved strength of soft ground but superior for prevention of settlement. However, the quality controls of improved mass affect to the efficiency of the deep mixing method is not properly established. These effects vary depending upon the construction environments and conditions of agitation in consideration of an agitator. The strength and shape of the improved column are not unique and these are affected by mechanical properties of agitators. In this study, in order to investigate the efficiency of deep mixing method for ground improvement on a soft clay ground, experimental studies are performed considering mechanical properties of agitator; the location of exit-hole of admixtures, an angle of mixing wing and a speed of revolution. The experiments are conducted with the simulated apparatus for deep mixing plant that reduced the scale in 1:8 of the real plant. According to the results, the diameter and shape of improved column mass vary depending on the mechanical properties and operating conditions of agitator. Its quality is better when the exit-hole of admixtures is located in the mixing wing, when an angle of mixing wing is large, and when the speed of revolution is rapid.
This study presents a reasonable and economical DCM reinforcement length for the various factors (the embankment height, the distance from the embankment to the underground structure, the depth of the soft ground, and the compression index and the swelling index of the soft ground) that affect the stability of the structure due to lateral movement. Based on these results, we analyzed each factor's degree of influence and figured out which factor influenced the lateral movement most. The cross section of the embankment on the soft ground was modeled by using the Finite Element Program and reinforced with DCM. The results show that the increase rate of the reinforcement length with the increase of the embankment height is about 9~50%, the increase rate of the reinforcement length with the depth of soft ground is about 13~30%, and the increase rate of the reinforcement length with increasing compression index is about 3~25%. In addition, the influence of each factor on each other was analyzed. As a result, among the separation distance, the compressive index and the maximum to minimum slope ratio of the reinforcement length of the embankment height, the separation distance was the largest for the depth of soft ground. As the depth of the soft ground increases, the ratio of the maximum to minimum slope of the reinforcement length according to the embankment height is 3.75, the ratio of the maximum to minimum slope of the reinforcement length according to the spacing distance is 4.3, and the ratio of maximum to minimum slope according to compression index is 2.5. From these results, it is confirmed that the three factors are greatly affected by the depth of soft ground.
In this study, the evaluation to probability of failure for risk assessment of port structures on DCM reinforced soils, where stability and risk assessment are increasing in importance, was performed. As a random variables affecting the risk of DCM improved ground, the design strength, superposition (overlap) of construction, strength of the natural ground, internal friction angle and unit weight of the modified ground were selected and applied to the risk assessment. In addition, the failure probability for the entire system under ordinary conditions and under earthquake conditions were analyzed. As a result, it was found that the highest coefficient of variation in the random variable for the risk assessment of the DCM improved ground is the design strength, but this does not have a great influence on the safety factor, ie, the risk of the system. The main risk factor for the failure probability of the system for the DCM reinforced soils was evaluated as horizontal sliding in case of external stability and compression failure in case of internal stability both at ordinary condition and earthquake condition. In addition, the failure probability for ordinary horizontal sliding is higher than that for earthquake failure, and the failure probability for ordinary compression failure is lower than that for earthquake failure. The ordinary failure probability of the entire system is similar to the failure probability on earthquake condition, but in this case, the risk of earthquake is somewhat higher.
Ground dynamic parameter such as shear elastic modulus and damping ratio is a very important variable in design of ground-structure with repeated load and dynamic load. Shear elastic modulus and damping ratio on small strain below linear limit strain is constant regardless of strain. Shear elastic modulus as the maximum shear elastic modulus and damping ratio as the minimum damping ratio were considered. As a lot of experiment related to the maximum shear elastic modulus, which is in dynamic deformation characteristics, have been conducted, many factors including voiding ratio, over consolidation ratio(OCR), confining pressure, geology time, PI, and the number of load cycle affect to dynamic soil characteristic. However, the research of ground dynamic characteristic improved with grout is absent such as underground continuous wall construction, deep mixing method, umbrella arch method. In order to investigate the dynamic soil characteristics improved with grout, in this study, resonant column tests were performed with changing water content(20%, 25%, 30%) and injection ratio of grout(5%, 10%, 15%), cure time(7th day, 28th day) As a result, shear elastic modulus and damping ratio, which are ground dynamic parameter, are affected by the injection ratio of milk grout, cure time and water content.
