  • Currently, there is no definitive regulation for the appropriate frequency of data sampling in water distribution networks, yet it plays a crucial role in the efficient operation of these systems. This study proposes a new methodology for determining the optimal frequency of data acquisition in water distribution networks. Based on the decomposition of signals using harmonic series, this methodology has been validated using actual data from water distribution networks. By analyzing 12 types of data collected from two points, it was demonstrated that utilizing the factors and cumulative periodograms of harmonic series enables similar accuracy at lower data acquisition frequencies compared to the original signals. • Purpose: We are to analyze optically how to affect the eye related with movement of the iris. Methods: Using the schematic eye to have the crystalline lens of the radial GRIN and the spherical GRIN forms that come to be planned in existing, the iris centre was moved 0.5 mm with nasal direction in order to be identical with the real eye. Also, considering that the iris centre move according to increase of the pupil size, the iris centre was moved 0.4 mm with temporal direction to analyze the optical performance change of the eye respectively. Results: Because of decrease in the spherical aberration, the schematic eye with nasal direction 0.5 mm eccentricity of the iris showed a different consequence plentifully compared with the performance of the real eye. Besides, the schematic eye with temporal direction 0.4 mm eccentricity of the iris showed that the spherical aberration somewhat increased. Conclusions: In case of design of the schematic eye with the similar real eye performance which the iris centre was moved 0.5 mm with nasal direction, we need to research about aspheric coefficient of optical constants of each refracting surface considering the performance change of a spherical aberration, a peripheral power error and astigmatism etc, owing to change of the real eye hence to be affected by the iris movement.

  • Continuous column adsorption experiments have been conducted fur artificial and actual wastewater which containing $Ni^{2+}$ by using manganese nodule as an adsorbent for the purpose of wastewater treatment along with an increased $Ni^{2+}$ recovery in the refining of manganese nodule. The adsorption features of $Ni^{2+}$ artificial wastewater were examined by taking the height of fixed bed, influent flow rate, and the initial concentration of adsorbate as the influential parameters. The adsorption capacity of manganese nodule and the rate constant for $Ni^{2+}$ adsorption were estimated employing Bohart-Adams equation. In addition, the variation of the adsorbed amount of adsorbate for each column according to the influent flow rate and the initial concentration of adsorbate was investigated based on the breakthrough curves fur each column. For serially connected columns, the adsorbed amount of $Ni^{2+}$ for each column was observed to increase gradually as the adsorption proceeded from the initial column to the final column. The variation of the breakthrough curve for actual wastewater with the height of fixed bed was not so significant as that for artificial wastewater, which was considered to be due to the high concentration of $Ni^{2+}$ in actual wastewater. Regarding the effect of the particle size of manganese nodule on adsorption, the adsorbed amount of adsorbate was found to somewhat increase as the particle size became smaller.

  • Two-phase cross-flow exists in many shell-tube heat exchangers such as condensers, reboilers and nuclear steam generators. To avoid problems due to excessive vibration, information on vibration excitation in two-phase cross-flow is required. Fluid-elastic instability is discussed in this paper. Four tube bundle configurations were subjected to increasing flow up to the onset of fluid-elastic instability. The tests were done on bundles with one flexible tube surrounded by rigid tubes. The fluid-elastic instability behavior is different for intermittent flows than for bubbly flows. For bubbly flows, the observed instabilities satisfy the relationship V/fd=K(2.pi..zeta. m/rho. $d^{21}$)$^{0.51}$ in which the minimum instability factor K was found to be 2.3 for bundles of p/d=1.22. The lowest critical velocities for fluid-elastic instability were experienced with parallel-triangular tube bundles. For intermittent flow, the observed instabilities did not follow the forgoing relation-ship. Significantly lower flow velocities were required for instability..

  • Plastic deformation of roadbed influences the stability and maintenance of concrete slab track. Long-term plastic deformation in a railway roadbed is generated primarily due to accumulated inelastic strains caused by repeated passing of trains. Prediction of cumulative plastic deformation is important in cost-effective maintenance of railway tracks as well as for the safe operation of trains. In this study, the vertical displacements in railway roadbeds with different thicknesses of reinforced roadbed were computed. Parameters of the power model for cumulative plastic strain were calibrated by using the data from triaxial tests and full-scale loading tests. Results of three-dimensional finite element analyses of standard roadbed sections provide us with design guidelines for the selection of the thickness of reinforced roadbed.

  • A dynamic compartment model was developed to evaluate the transport of accidently released radionuclides onto rice-fields. In the model, the surface water compartment and shoot-base absorption were introduced to account for the effect of irrigation, which is essential to a rice cultivation. The soil mixing by plough and irrigation before transplanting rice was also considered, and the rate of root-uptake and shoot-base absorption were modeled in terms of the function of biomass. In order to test the validation of the model, it was applied to the analysis of some simulated $^{137}Cs$ deposition experiments that were performed while cultivating rice in a greenhouse using soils sampled from rice-fields around Kori, Yonggwang and Ulchin nuclear power plants. The model prediction was generally agreed within about one order of magnitude with experimental data.

  • A mathematical model has been derived and used to describe phosphoprotein partitioning in Fe(III) IDA-PEG/dextran two-phase systems. This model includes the inhibitory effects of hydrogen and hydroxyl ion concentrations on protein partitioning. For aqueous two-phase partitioning experiments, the Al and A2 subcomponents of ovalbumin carrying two and one surface phosphoryl group(s) were purified using an immobilized metal ion affinity chromatography (IMAC). The ratio of partition coefficients in the presence and absence of Fe(III)IDA-PEG, K/Ko, increased in the pH range of 3.0 to 5.0 due to deprotonation of the second oxygen of the phosphoryl group, and above pH 5.0 declined steeply by the inhibitory binding of hydroxyl ions to the metal ion. This partitioning behavior was well described by the mathematical model. The binding constants for formation of the complex between the phosphoryl group and the Fe(III)IDA-PEG were found to be $6.1{\times}10^3M^{-1} and 2.3{\times}10^4M^{-1}$ in the top and bottom phases, respectively. These values are 3-5 times those for interaction of Cu(II)IDA-PEG with a single surface-accessible histidine.

  • It is essential to predict thermodynamic properties of combustion gas with respect to a propellant mixture ratio for the development of a gas generator for a liquid rocket engine. The present study shows the temperature measurement of exit combustion gas as a function of a mixture ratio through the series of combustion tests of a fuel-rich gas generator with liquid oxygen and Jet A-1. The measurements of dynamic and static pressures, and combustion gas temperatures allowed the estimation of thermodynamic properties like a specific heat ratio, a gas constant, and a constant pressure specific heat of the combustion gas. The comparison of the experimental results with predictions made by interpolation parameters obtained from the modification of the chemical equilibrium code indicates that the interpolation method calibrated using the temperature measurements can be utilized as an effective tool for the initial design of a fuel-rich gas generator.
