A Conceptual Study on the Types of Entrepreneurial Opportunity and Laboratory Start-ups (창업 기회의 유형과 실험실 창업에 대한 개념적 연구)

  • This study focuses on the proposition that the qualities and environmental conditions required for exploring entrepreneurial opportunities and realizing entrepreneurial opportunities depend on the types of entrepreneurial opportunities. In particular, this study aims to identify the type of entrepreneurial opportunities for laboratory start-ups, which have recently been gaining policy level attention. If the type of entrepreneurial opportunities for laboratory start-ups is identified as discriminative, appropriate start-up support policies and training programs can be established. For this study, eight major papers were identified among the papers of last 30 years related to the types of entrepreneurial opportunities. After, the classification attributes for each opportunity type were derived. Then, the existing theories of recognition, discovery and creative opportunities were organized, critically reviewed and reorganized. In addition, the substance of laboratory start-ups was verified according to the standardized classification attributes of the revised and reorganized opportunity types and newly classified as 'creative opportunity'. This study also presents networking capabilities and market orientation as examples of the capabilities needed for entrepreneurs of creative opportunity type. The implication of this study is that it makes it easy to discriminate ontological typology of entrepreneurial opportunity, derives important classification attributes, and that it organizes them conceptually. In addition, it critically reconstructs the problems of confusion in the existing typology, and based on this, the type of entrepreneurial opportunities for laboratory start-ups is determined as creative opportunity. These achievements can contribute to the improvement of start-up policies and start-up training programs according to the types of entrepreneurial opportunity and laboratory start-ups in the future, resulting in realization of actual results at the start-up sites.

  • The global Industry has been shaped by start-ups that originated with knowledge-based innovative strategies or technologies in the 21st century. Specifically, laboratory start-ups that rely on research papers or patents for new technology development are recognized for their high survival rate and the creation of employment opportunities. Our study concentrated on 'I-Corps', which also introduced in Korea, standing for innovation corps is a laboratory startup program launched in 2011 by the NSF(National Research Foundation) to commercialize R&D results and foster entrepreneurship as part of the policy to build a start-up system at the national innovation level. In this study, we proposed and empirically tested a research model focusing on teams participating in the I-Corps program to determine how startup team diversity, among the team characteristics of laboratory startups, affected patent performance. As a result of the analysis, among the proposed variables, age diversity, educational background diversity, and value diversity had a significant impact on patent performance. The results of this study are expected to further strengthen the theoretical and practical foundations of researchers or practitioners of the I-Corps program, as well as related areas involving technology & laboratory startups, intellectual property and knowledge management fields in the future.

The Impact of Social Capital and Laboratory Startup Team Diversity on Startup Performance Based on a Network Perspective: Focusing on the I-Corps Program (네트워크 관점에 기반한 사회적 자본 및 실험실 창업팀 다양성이창업 성과에 미치는 영향: I-Corps program을 중심으로)

  • As supreme technologies continue to be developed, industries such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robots, aerospace, electric vehicles, and solar energy are created, and the macro business environment is rapidly changing. Due to these large-scale changes and increased complexity, it is necessary to pay attention to the effect of social capital, which can create new value by utilizing capital increasing the importance of relationships rather than technology or asset ownership itself at the level of start-up strategy. Social capital is a concept first proposed by Hanifan in 1916, and refers to the overall sum of capabilities or resources that are latent or available for use in mutual, continuous, organic relationships or accumulated human relationship networks between individuals or social members. In addition, the diversity of start-up teams with diverse backgrounds, characteristics, and capabilities, rather than one exceptional founder, has been emphasized. Founding team diversity refers to the diversity of in-depth factors such as demographic factors, beliefs, and values of the founding team. In addition, changes in the macro environment are emphasizing the importance of technology start-ups and laboratory start-ups that lead industrial innovation and create the nation's core growth engines. This study focused on the I-Corps' program. I-Corps, which means innovation corps, is a laboratory startup program launched by the National Research Foundation (NSF) in 2011 to encourage entrepreneurship and commercialization of research results. It focuses on forming a startup team involving professors, researchers and market discovery activities. Taking these characteristics into account, this study empirically verified the impact of social capital from a network perspective and founding team diversity on I-Corps start-up performance. As a result of the analysis, the educational diversity of the founding team had a negative (-) effect on the financial performance of the founding team. On the other side, the gender diversity and the cognitive dimension of social capital had a positive (+) effect on the financial performance of the founding team. This study is expected to provide more useful theoretical and practical implications regarding the diversity, social capital, and performance interpretation of the I-Corps Lab startup team.

사용자 인증 보안을 위한 온라인 서명검증시스템

  • 컴퓨터와 유\ulcorner무선 인터넷이 확산되어 더욱 보안의 중요성이 요구되면서 살아있는 개별 인간의 신체 일부를 이용한 생체인증 보안기술이 핫 이슈로 회자되고있다. 지문인증, 얼굴인증, 홍채인증, 정맥인증, DNA 인증, 뇌파인증, 손금/손모양인증, 음성인증, 서명인증 등 많은 생체인식기술들은 이미 수십 년 전부터 연구되었고, 과거 한때 상품화도 되었으나 시대의 요구에 부응하지 못하고 사라졌지만, 최근 들어서는 더욱 활발한 연구가 진행되고 있고 다양한 영역에서 상용화가 된 상태이다. 본 서명인증 보안기술은 전자펜(혹은 마우스)으로 입력된 개인의 동적인 서명을 이용하는 것으로써, 쓰는 모양, 쓰는 속도, 필체의 각도, 획수, 획순서, 펜DOWN/UP 정보 등의 여러 가지 정보를 비교\ulcorner분석하여 진서명인지 모조서명인지를 실시간으로 검증하는 것이다. 경제성, 보안성, 활용성, 안정성, 편의성 등의 여러 가지 관점에서 볼 때, 앞으로 널리 확산될 전망이다. 본 논문에서는 지난 10여 년간 직접 연구 개발하여 2000년 8월에 교수실험실창업으로 사업화한 서명기술의 개요와 응용/구축사례를 소개하고자 한다.

The Effective Risk Management of Academic Entrepreneurs' R&D Technology Transfer (학술적 기업가의 R&D 성과이전 위험의 효과적 관리)

  • The transfer of R&D performance is the technology transfer in a narrow sense. This study aimed at fanning the effective managerial systems of the transfer of the academic entrepreneur's R&D performance. For this purpose, this study analysed the characteristics and success factors of R&D performance transfer based on the theory of project life cycle. This research classified the life cycle of academic entrepreneurs' R&D projects into six stages. And the risks associated with the transfer process was categorized using the case study about the establishing processes the mineral-related small finns. Especially, the risk of the technology transfer was investigated by the R&D project implementation stages. Based on this results, this paper suggested the strategic system such as the marketing-oriented thinking, the clear-cut statement of the role among the stake-holders of the R&D and commercialization processes, the dynamic system of the academic entrepreneurs' leadership, the formation of the transfer management system, and the usage of project risk management techniques.

  • Conventional funding system for the university research projects is limited to a grant or subsidy type funding method which does not require an obligation of refund. Such a funding system is known as ideal one for the university research activities which in general is not a profit oriented activities. It is considered ideal in a sense that nonprofit oriented research activities gives more emphasis on creativity than on efficiency or practical value. A venture- business-start-up research activity can not be considered as a pure nonprofit oriented activities. It clearly gives more emphasis on efficiency and practical value than on creativity Recently a large portion of the venture-business-start-up research activities are carried out in the universities. When a conventional research funding system is applied to such a new type of research activities, it turned out that the success rate is much lower than expectancy. This is why a new and differentiated funding system is sought for such a new type of research activities. A funding system of loan type for a venture-business-start-up research activities is proposed herewith. A loan system naturally requires a pay back after the successful start up of the venture business. This loan system nay be considered that a business concept is grafted on a conventional funding system for the university research activities. This means that a rather loose or generous terms and conditions of the money loan case is introduced into this funding system to remedy the short comings of the intrinsic nonprofit nature of the university research activities. The point is how to improve the success rate and how to reduce the undesirable aspect of the conventional university research activities when it is practiced with the new type of research activities. After one and half year of practicing with the new funding system. it can not be asserted that a definitely positive results could be obtained. but a trend of desirable aspects could be observed such as low drop out rate. project selection efficiency, higher sense of responsibility. etc.
