In general, the shear strength of a clay specimen under the direct shear test and the triaxial compression test increases with an increase in the shear rate. This study investigates the effects of shear rate and silt content on the stress-strain behavior of remolded Gwangyang clay, by changing the shear rate and the silt content. Based on the results of the triaxial compression tests, the equi-strain line of remolded Gwangyang clay shows initially positive slope and then becomes flat at certain strain level. As the strain level where the equistrain becomes flat is different depending on the soil with different silt contents, this can be considered as the inherent property of soil.
In this study, a series of pullout experiments were conducted on geogrid with attached passive reinforcement with respect to silt containments. Experiments were performed on man-made sand ground containing different silt of 0 %, 17 %, 35 % under various normal stresses 30 kPa, 60 kPa, 120 kPa respectively. The pullout test results showed that passive reinforcement increased the pullout strength over all silt contained condition and showed up to 20 % increases for same soil condition. The test results converted to the coefficient of interaction of pullout test to investigate the effect of reinforcement and the case of passive reinforcement showed 0.7~1.6 distribution depend on a silt contents. Therefore it is concluded that the overall length of geogrid can be reduced under the low vertical stress conditions.

Fines such as silt or clay are usually mixed with granular particles in natural or reclaimed soils which are slightly cemented. Such fines contained within weakly cemented soils may influence permeability and also mechanical behavior of the soils. In this study, a series of unconfined compression tests on weakly cemented sands with fines are carried out in order to evaluate the effect of fines on unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of cemented soils. Two different cement ratios and fine types were used and fine contents varied by 5, 10, and 15%. Two types of specimens were prepared in this testing. One is the specimen with the same compaction energy applied. The other is the one with the same dry density by varying compaction energy. When the same amount of compaction energy was applied to a specimen, its density increased as a fine content increased. As a result, the UCS of cemented soils with fines increased up to 2.6 times that of one without fines as an amount of fines increased. However, when the specimen was prepared to have the same density, its UCS slightly decreased and then increased a little as a fine content increased. Under the same conditions, a UCS of the specimen with silt was stronger than the one with kaolin. As a cement ratio increased, a UCS increased regardless of fine type and content.
As a result of calculating bearing capacity of soft silt soil(ML) and soft silt soils(ML', SM, SM') mixed with sand, all kinds of soils showed smaller values than existing expressions and when theoretical values are applied, considerable review is required. It was found that ultimate surcharge(bearing capacity) of soft silt soil was $q_{ult}=1.34C_u$ that of ML' soil in soft silt soils mixed with 3 kinds of sand $q_{ult}=1.40s$, that of SM soil $q_{ult}=1.73s$ and that of SM' soil $q_{ult}=2.72s$, Consequently, as content of sand having greater permeability than silt soil in creased, soil was stabilized gradually.
Numerical analysis of frost heave is challenging due to the influence of soil and environmental factors. Thermo-hydromechanical coupled analysis relies heavily on excessive input variables and primarily focuses on validating clayey soils, so it is limited to frost susceptible silty soils. An empirical approach based on thermodynamics offers relatively simple frost heave analysis and the advantage of linking constitutive equations with frost heave to enable geomechanical interpretations. In this paper, we introduce an empirical numerical model using the Segregation Potential (SP) and evaluate reliability through comparative analysis with experimental results of frost susceptible silty soils. While the SP model enables frost heave analysis for the given silty soils, further investigation on various silty soils is necessary to gather data on key input variables.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of design criteria and environmental conditions of the site of created tidal flats on the structure and function of man-made ecosystem. Seven constructed tidal flats and three natural tidal flats were studied taking the difference in the location (wave height and tidal current), inflow of river water, slope of tidal flat and age after the construction completed into consideration. Parameters studied were physico-chemical and biological characteristics of soils and rate of respiration. The natural tidal flats had higher contents of silt, nitrogen and organic matter compared with the constructed ones. The natural ones had reductive zone below 2cm, whereas the constructed ones had aerobic zone from the surface to below 20cm. The bacterial population in the soil of the constructed tidal flats was one to two orders of magnitude lower than that in the natural ones. Both biomass of macrobenthos and microbial respiration rate, however, were not different significantly between the natural and the constructed tidal flats. There was an exceptional constructed tidal flat with similar physico-chemical and biological characteristics to the natural ones. It is most probable that sufficient conditions to have similar tidal flats to natural ones are the location in enclosed bay or calm coastal area. Thus, to make man-made tidal flats with the same characteristics as those in natural ones, man-made tidal flats should be designed and/or located to enhance the accumulation of silt on tidal flat. It is important to select a place having low water motion for construction of tidal flat.
Samples of silty sands and hydraulic fill ground were investigated by dynamic triaxial teats in order to evaluate the liquefaction strengths. In the tests, (1) undisturbed and disturbed samples were prepared, (2) dynamic shear strengths were measured under isotropic and anisotropic condition, and (3) the test results were compared with the other results which were tested by domestic and foreign researchers. The liquefaction shear strengths under ismtropic test condition were presented in terms of the relative densities. The amount of silt under 30o hardly influenced on the liquefaction strength. In the test results of anisotropically consolidated samples the liquefaction strength was dependent on the magnitude of the effective consolidation ratio. These teat results show that the liquefaction strength of the silty sand in Korea went coast exists within the boundary of the values suggested by Seed and Peacock(1971).
Recently, the participation on the development of the natural gas pipeline in Russia as well as the recent construction of the second Korean Antarctic research station, the Jangbogo station provide the research interests on the behavior of the permafrost ground. To investigate the effect of fines on the mechanical responses of frozen sands, unconfined compression tests were performed on the frozen sands with 0, 5, 10 and 15% of fine contents at -5, -10 and $-15^{\circ}C$. The poorly graded (SP) Joomunjin sand and kaolinite, silt with low plasticity (ML) were used for the preparation of the frozen soil specimens. The mechanical responses of the tested soils were investigated via unconfined compression tests in the temperature controlled laboratory and analyzed in terms of peak unconfined compressive strength and secant modulus at 50% of the peak strength. As the fine contents increase, the unfrozen water contents increase and thus the strength and stiffness of frozen soils decrease. The increment of the stiffness and strength due to the temperature decrease vary with the fine contents.
To investigate the relationship between compressive strength ($q_u$) of Lightweight Air-mixed soil (LAS) and its physical deformation coefficient ($E_{50}$), a series of unconfined compressive tests have been performed on specimens of LAS according to various dredged soil types by percentage of sand, silt and clay. From the results it was found that the cement content ($C_i$) and unit weight (${\gamma}_m$) are most influence factors on strength, and percentage of sand, silt, clay by grain size analysis (KS F2302) have more effect on compressive strength than other physical properties of soil. It was also found that the rate of strength (a) increases with curing time, but it reduces with the increase of percentage of clay ($C_%$).
Laboratory and in-situ tests were conducted to evaluate the cone factors for the layers with low plasticity containing a lot of silty and sand soils from the west coast (Incheon, Hwaseong and Gunsan areas) and its applicability was evaluated based on these results. The cone factors were evaluated from 19 to 23 based on unconfined compression strengths (qu), from 13 to 13.8 based on simple CU strengths and from 11.6 to 13.1 based on field vane strengths, respectively. The unconfined compression strengths of undisturbed silty soil samples with low plasticity were considerably underestimated due to the change of in-situ residual effective stress during sampling. Half of unconfined compression strength (qu/2) based cone factors of silty soils with low plasticity fluctuated and were approximately 1.8 times higher than simple CU based values of these soils. When evaluating cone factors of these soils, it should be judged overall on the physical properties such as the grain size distribution and soil plasticity and on the fluctuation of the corrected cone resistance and the sleeve friction due to the distribution of sandseam in the ground including pore pressure parameter.
