  • Reyner Banham characterized the Second Machine Age as the age of domestic electronics and synthetic chemistry in opposition to the First. It means technology and science would be popularized in the Second Machine Age. The Second Machine Age began in the mid-50's in which pop culture and SF became popularized. The architects in both Machine Age choose the scientifism as the motive of architectural design. But not all of them approach to the design with the pure theory of science. This study analyses the types of scientifism in architectural design in the 1950's and the 60's based on approaches to technology which might be classified as pragmatic, radical, and pop.

  • The nature is the foundation of human life and arts, and human beings have found order and principle amid ceaseless change and harmonization of the nature and diversified patterns and directly or indirectly applied the nature to interior through discovered principles. Interior space to which the organic factors of the nature is an expression of the vitality of the nature and expresses live forms as seen in change, development and growth of living organisms in addition to human feelings. The study aims to recognize the necessity of studies on interior space to which organic expressive characteristics of the nature are applied in uniformed space, suggest expressive characteristics and propose needed basic data required at a time of designing interior space. In this regard, the study has examined works by five contemporary designers including Zaha Hadid, Karim Rashid, Fabio Novembre and Nox with an aim to analyze expressive characteristics of interior design and figure expressive characteristics of organic design found in interior space. According to analyses on preceding literary studies and case studies (14 places), it has been found that organic expressive characteristics in interior space include vision, tactile sensation and auditory sense in terms of sensitivity, immateriality in terms of a property of matter, metaphor and abstraction in terms of the form of natural objects and non-linear curves and free curves in organic design. Organic spaces were characterized by symbolism, directionality, continuity, pattern and superimposition. This conclusion is expected to be useful in subsequent studies on the application of organic expressive characteristic factors at a time of planning interior space in the future.

  • This study examines potential growth and different perspectives on green-walls, which are being re-evaluated recently. The aim is to identify the viewer preferences concerning the walls by collecting a wide spectrum of information to create an interior design related comprehensive and intellectual database. Also based on this proposition, choosing a green surface of indoor wall as a specific example stimulus, identifying a relationship betweeationsviewer's preference factors. The relationship will formulate detailed and absolute qualities, which will reach potential areas that the green walls can be widely applied in. As a result of a factor analysis, the viewers classified into the 3 factors as is pleasant, gorgeous and rich about the stimulus. Preferred key factors, which are closely related to emotional image language, were; cool, tidy, comfortable and beautiful. The common factors in preferred design stimulus, in order of importance are color>elements>image/form/plants. Specific levels of design factors according to relevance are contrast>furniture> modern>central/creeper foliage plants. In the meantime, this study is leading the process of quantitative measurement of green-walls to a new design direction and it is critical to consistently experimenting to back up the theory with solid evidence.

The purpose of this study is to closely examine this style based on interior features classified by patterns and elements during America's colonial period. Results of this study show that the interior style of the Colonial House was, at first, similar to Europe style. It was then integrated into the Georgian style of England and affected by Palladio as time passed. The interior style of the American Colonial House was based on rationality and practicality in concern with American weather and regions rather than imitation. The side of the roof was clapboard and the windows arranged with symmetry and rules around the entrance hall. It was generally Palladian style and was decorated with classical details. Timber frame of the interior was based on log cabins that appeared early in the American immigration. Furniture styles such as Jacobian, Queen Ann and Chippendale were matched with unique wood-oriented details and folkways like Chest, Rush Chair and Windsor Chair The house was also decorated with pictures, mirrors and ornaments, etc.
