  • The purpose of this study was to investigate housing situation and residential satisfaction of foreigners in Korea, and to identify influential factors for housing satisfaction. A questionnaire survey was conducted to 132 foreigners who reside in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. Most of the respondents were Chinese and the average age was 45.7. Over 90% of the respondents lived in a rented house and detached house was the most popular type of house. Overall score of residential satisfaction was 3.43 and it was above average. However, scores for parking lot, housing deterioration, and space planning showed the lowest level of satisfaction. Factor analysis was used to summarize the variables related to residential satisfaction and 5 factors -'space planning and organization,' 'amenities & equipment', 'community facilities,' 'near environment' and 'housing expenses'- were drawn. Among those, 'space planning and organization' was the most influential factor to residential satisfaction as the result of multiple regression analysis.

  • Rural houses are losing their original shape as they mimic the spatial composition of urban houses. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to extract the design elements needed for rural housing by applying Christopher Alexander's "A PATTERN LANGUAGE" to Standard Rural-House Design (SRHD). The scope and method of research was to compare and analyze the standard designs (SD) produced and distributed by the 'Korea Rural Community Corporation' from 2009 to 2014. The research result is summarized as follows. 1) The housing layout in the SD ignored the site conditions of various rural areas. 2) Most of the houses were not actively planned, considering that they contain various activities of rural life. 3) There was no room for children and the kitchen was planned to integrate the interior into a flexible space in the form of L.D.K. 4) There was no space plan that could be used as both a leasable annex and office space for the farming community. 5) Many small area plans were made because of the SD plan for couples only in 2014. Although the rural environment and living patterns were ignored in the SD, the diverse pattern language provided by the pattern language was developed as a SD element for rural houses, which is the most suitable housing plan for the farmers' livelihood pattern.

  • Indoor fire hydrant facilities and sprinkler system applied to the initial fire suppression for buildings' interior fire are pivotal roles in extinguishing the fire in the early stage. The roof shapes of recent buildings combined with distinctive local culture and design are being constructed. Distinctive roof forms, i.e. gable roof buildings are planned and built, View point planning with the roof gardens also restricts measurement of the discharge pressure on the indoor fire hydrant, It is too narrow to gauge the water discharge pressure with deploying up to 5 water hoses. To resolve these problems improvement for the efficient management of indoor fire hydrant system and the effective early stage flame extinguishment is suggested.

  • As a part of the research on existing structures of private homes from Joseon Era. Focusing on one hundred twenty five-purlin houses, the current study investigated the features and characteristics of the house structure from style, size, proportion and roof pitch, and measurements of key parts, and developed the following conclusions. Most are single-houses (89, 83%), and among them, there are 47 single front-terrace houses (39%), which is the highest number. The sizes of lower house structure do not differ greatly depending on the vertical structure, and single rear terrace house and double-house have relatively larger side sizes. The size of upper structure is larger in double-houses compared to other vertical structures, indicating a relatively higher roof. The cross-section measurement of major parts show that double-houses are larger than single-houses by 3cm in pillar, 3-4.5cm in crossbeam length, and 4.5cm in crossbeam width. However, Janghyeo width was consistent at 7.5 to 10.5cm, maintaining uniformity regardless of vertical structure of the houses. In addition, the cross-section measurements decreased from sixteenth to nineteenth century, with the size of pillar size decreasing the most. The result that the Janghyeo width is not related to the house structure house confirmed that the Janghyeo width was kept consistent regardless of the size of the house structure.

  • This study aimed to elucidate the architectural characteristics of the cathedral architecture of the Archdiocese of Gwangju, which was completed in the period of liberation and turbulence, and the conclusions are as follows. Gwangju Archdiocese Cathedral, completed during the period of liberation and turbulence, was built with some assistance from the U.S. military or with the efforts of the faithful, and there are a number of factors such as space directing by Aps, the development of a simplified bell tower, the appearance of a stone cathedral, the application of a quenset structure, and an increase in size. show special features The indented apse appears only after liberation, and is a characteristic that appears prominently in stone churches. The simplified form in which the bell was hung by raising the outer wall appeared in the early church shows a change in the composition with a porch in front. The stone church and the quanset-structured church only appeared after liberation and were built only in the 1950s. The size of the cathedral reflects the increase in the number of believers after the Korean War, and the average area is about 1.5 times higher than before liberation. When considering the spacing of the bays as a module, the size plan followed the implicit norm of early cathedral architecture of 36.5m, but gradually decreased to 2.7m and 2.4m.

  • This study sought to reveal the architectural characteristics of Quonset church built in the Archdiocese of Gwangju, and the conclusions are as follows. The Quonset structure, which was used as a military barracks during World War II and was designed to be easily assembled and disassembled quickly, was used in Damyang, Hwasun, and Gokseong churchs. They were all built in 1958, after the Korean War, and can be related to the historical background of the rapid increase in the number of Catholics. They are utility buildings that can accommodate many believers, that is, large quonsets measuring 40 feet (width) x 100 feet (length). The floor plan was largely divided into two spaces, with about 3/4 reserved for the nave and altar, and the remaining 1/4, or 24 to 30 feet, used as a sacristy or confessional. The cross-section is a semicircle with a radius of 20 feet, framed by 6-inch ribs, and its unique structure, in which bricks are stacked on the outside to form the exterior, makes it different from a typical brick church. Unlike other stone churches built around the same time, Quonset church was not expanded. This may be due to the difficulty in supplying special materials such as the ribs that make up the frame, as well as the absence of relevant experts.
