(3,4). Protein affinity membranes were prepared via coating of chitosan gel on the porous flat and hollow-fiber polysulfone membranes, followed by the immobilization of the reactive dye (Cibacron Blue 3GA) to the chitosan gel. Maximum protein binding capacity of these affinity membranes was about 70 $\mu{g/cm}^2$. Using the affinity flat membrane module, the elution chromatography of human serum albumin (HSA) was performed to determine the optimum condition of eluent buffer. The optimum condition of eluent was the universal buffer solution of 0.06 M concentration containing 1 M KCl at pH 10. For the frontal chromatography of HSA using the flat module, the dynamic protein binding capacity was rapidly decreased from the equilibrium values with increasing flow rate and HSA concentration of the loading solution. However, in the case of hollow-fiber module, the dynamic binding capacity was maintained an equilibrium value without depending on the operating conditions. These results showed that the hollow-fiber module was more effective than the flat module as an affinity chromatography column.
Hollow fiber membrane has been successfully developed as an artificial kidney device in the 1970's. In the early 1970's animal cells were introduced into a hollow fiber membrane cartridge and well propagated in the cartridge. Since then, hollow fiber membrane was utilized as a bioreactor in order to immobilize enzymes as well as to culture microbial cells and plant cells. In this review, the present status and the prospect of hollow fiber membrane bioreactor are investigated in view of cell density and product productivity.

Liquid-liquid extractions by use of hollow fiber membrane module are fast because of the large surface area per volume. In these membranes, the extractant and feed can be contacted at high speed and two flows are completely independent, so there are no problems with loading and channeling. In this paper, it was investigated the selectivities of extractants for extraction of heavy metals from aqueous solution into organic extractants by using the hollow fiber membrane. To identify the effect of distribution ratio on mass transfer in the membrane, we also compared the distribution ratio with mass transfer coefficient. From these experiments for the system with high distribution ratio, effect of the distribution ratio on mass transfer was weak compare with the low distribution ratio system in the hollow fiber membrane.
The perstraction of ethanol and acetic acid were performed for three systems of xylene-acetic acid-water, MIBK-ethanol-water, and TBP-ethanol-water, The operating variables were pressure difference between aqueous and organic phase, and superfial velocities of aqueous and organic phases. The tortuosities of PP hollow fiber membrane of Celgard X10-400 and PTFE hollow fober membrane of Tex TA001 were found to be 1.82 and 1.43 respectively, They were obtained from mass tranfer coeffidents in membrane phase for xylene-acetic acid-water systems. The permeation flux and overall mass transfer coefficient for MIBK-ethanol-water system are larger than those for TBP-ethanol-water system. This tendency is magnified with increasing the superficial velocity of organic phase. Overall mass transfer coefficient($K_o$) increases nonlinearly with the increase of superficial velocity of organic phase($V_{or}$), and the relationship between $K_o$ and $V_{or}$ is that $K_o {\propto} V_{or}^{-0.35}$. For ethanol perstraetion using the hollow fiber membrane of Gore Tex TA001, the mass transfer in membrane phase is the rate-limiting step.
The sorption and permeation experiments with $O_2$ and $N_2$ were performed with poly sulfone hollow-fiber membrane to obtain oxygen-enriched air. Sorption of $O_2$ on poly sulfone membrane was 1.5'||'&'||'not;2.0 times higher than that of N2. Sorption of oxygen and nitrogen in poly sulfone membrane was described satisfactorily with "dual-mode sorption model". In the low pressure range below 3kgr!cm', about 85% of total sorption was Langmuir-type sorption and only 15% was Henry-type sorption. In the higher pressure above 3kgf/${cm}^2$, Langmuir sorption sites became almost saturated and reached asymptote, and the increase in total sorption with pressurizing might be due to the Henry~type sorption. The ideal separation factor ( P $O_2$/ P $N_2$) was in the range of 2~4, while the actual separation factor for the mixture was reduced to the value of 1.7~2.2.2.2.

Solubilization phenomena of a protein in a reversed micellar solution were investigated and a hollow fiber membrane extractor was tested for reversed micellar protein extraction equipment. Alkaline protease was used as a model protein compound and the reversed micellar solution was consisted of AOT and isooctane. It was found that protein solubilization was strongly influenced by ionic strength and pH. The distribution coefficient of the protease between the aqueous solution and the AOT/isooctane solution was also observed to be as high as 4.0 within the scope of this experiment. A hollow fiber membrane extractor was constructed and tested for the protein extraction. The overall mass transfer coefficient at a typical experimental condition of this study was observed to be $6.7{\times}10^{-5}cm/s$. It was also found that the mass transfer resistance on reversed micellar solution was the dominant resistance for the protein transfer.
A study on the citric acid production was performed in various size dual hollow fiber bioreactors with immobilized Aspergillus niger (KCTC 1232). The final dry cell mass density reached 300g/l based on the space volume available for cell growth. Under air and oxygen aeration the volumethe productivity reached 0.63 and 1.02g/l.h, which cormsponded to 10 and 16 fold over those of batch fermentation, respectively. The initial pH of the medium was a critical factor and the lower value resulted in higher citric acid yield. The increase in the feeding rate of medium or the number of reactor unit resulted in the improvement of the productivity due to higher consumption rate of substrate.
